Chapter 1: The usual introduction.

Puerta del Sol, Madrid.
By now most of the people there were looking at the weird, roman-looking building that had just appeared magically in the center of the square. Some of them got their mobile phones and started recording, they thought it was an event, maybe a weird celebration for finally overcoming that damn pandemic. That feeling vanished when the policemen guarding the square, initially there to prevent overcrowding, injuries, and terrorist attacks, approached the building, inspecting the marble walls and columns that looked like those of Roman architecture. They then started to look at the entrance of that building. Was it bigger on the inside than on the outside?

No one was expecting any notable news from happening, so most employees had already left to spend the new year with their families or friends. Only the employees in charge of "24 horas" remained, obviously. So when they were let know that a roman structure had suddenly appeared in the middle of la Puerta del sol, they prepared the set and started transmitting. At the same time, the police were evacuating the square just in case this proved to be a dangerous situation, placing a perimeter around the square. Most citizens attending the celebrations thought that this was the worst thing that could happen during the new year, but little did they know this wasn't the worst thing that they would experience that night.

A bomb squad had arrived, with one of their AUNEV bomb-defusing robots. They planned to send it through this "gate", which now produced a low humming noise. The robot was ready to enter the Roman structure in a very short time, having been equipped with a powerful flashlight due to the apparent darkness of the "gate". As the robot entered the building, several news programs from other countries, especially those who had already entered the new year or who were several hours from entering, had started reporting this weird occurrence, CNN, NHK, BBC, Das Erste, and many others.
The robot finally entered the building, with its HD camera transmitting live video and sound to the operators. There they found an infinite dark space, with no apparent walls or ceiling. As the machine went deeper and deeper into the darkened space, its signal started deteriorating. And just before they were going to bring it back, they saw a small spark of light in the distance. Using the zoom they saw that the light seemed to be fire, maybe a torch of some kind, and it seemed to be approaching. The technicians consulted their superiors and the decision was made to stop the robot and wait for the light to get closer.

The new year was fast approaching, just like that light in the "gate". The people were starting to get restless, why couldn't they celebrate the new year like always? It was just a stupid building that wasn't bothering anyone! Thanks to the situation with the crowd, the police requested backup, bringing the number of policemen present from 38 to 120, which would help with what would happen in the following hours. The light was so close that the camera could now see what the hell was holding it, and what they found surprised them. A column of Roman soldiers, complete with armor and swords, and even some fantastical creatures, such as ogres, werewolves, and goblins. An unidentified flag flew at the front, with a purple color and a gold frame. It wasn't close enough to make out what was inside that purple, but it was clear that they didn't have good intentions. It was estimated that they would arrive just in the new year, give or take a few minutes. The police started to evacuate the civilians from the surroundings of the square, as some other policemen took defensive positions around the building. It was going to be something interesting, at the very least.
