Breathe. Aim. Accuracy over speed.
Atreus let go of his arrow and watched as it struck the deer's neck. Smiling at his kill he rose from the tree he was crouching behind and walked over to inspect his would be dinner.
He took his knife out and began cutting up the meat that he only needed and left the rest of it for nature to take for itself. He imagined his father speaking in his gruff voice congratulating him on his hunt, and Mimir in his strange accent complementing the lad with how his skills as an archer were getting better.
It's been about a year since Ragnarök happened and Atreus leaving for his journey to find any other giants. No luck has popped up as of yet but he hasn't given up hope, his visions were helpful albeit quite vague in their descriptions of where he had to go. There were times where the young Jötun was displeased with his lack of findings and contemplated whether he should return home but his father's voice had always broke through telling him to get up and keep going, to never falter, to never stray from the path. And Atreus listened and he kept going forward.
Atreus returned to his makeshift camp in the woods and set the meat he had taken onto a piece of cloth next to his campfire. After getting a fire started and retrieving a long stick to put the deer meat on, he stabbed the stick into the ground close enough to the fire for it cook while he checked on his equipment.
The shoulder pads and leather were still in sturdy condition of his fate breaker armour, his knife was as sharp as ever, his arrows were plentiful and readily accessible on his lower back. His Talon bow showed no signs of cracks or splintering remarkably after the years of being used, and the bowstring still had its sonic and sigil magic on it.
Atreus frowned as he remembered the day Sindri enhanced his bow. He really missed his old friend he considered an uncle.
Sometimes Atreus' mind would go back to the moment when Odin-
No. No, he would not think about that, there was nothing he could have done to prevent or foresee Brok's death, they were all tricked into believing they had rescued the real Týr. But it still didn't stop hurting him.
The young archer set his focus on his food, once he was finished eating he would go to bed and follow Sindri's last piece of advice and sleep.
•••
Atreus was in his tent, shuffling in his sleep but then felt a bright light through his eyelids and woke up to find a small glowing ball of light that floated above him, it looked sort of like bifrost except brighter. It began to float away, Atreus was entranced by the sight and started following it. Was he having a a dream? Was he having a vision?... Was it the deer meat he ate? He shook his head and continued following the mysterious ball of light.
After half an hour of trekking through the dense woods, the young god was convinced that it was not a dream because if it were he wouldn't be tired from the lack of sleep he was having, but he was also curious of his new found guide.
"Uh... are you a spirit or something? Is there a place that you're taking me to?" He asked curiously, hoping that by starting a conversation he would get answers. But it remained silent much to his disappointment, "Well, if you're not a spirit I guess that's why I can't feel you as much. Do you have a name?" He received the same silence which Atreus was confident he would continue receiving, he then felt a strange sensation wash over him, like a tugging feeling.
When passing through some high bushes, he came to a stop at a rocky ledge where his bifrost guide was hovering over it. when Atreus approached to a safe distance from the ledge he saw that it was a part of a small mountain range encircling a huge lake that had a perfect reflection of the sky. It was similar to the Lake of Nine, but it wasn't as grand when compared, he looked over to the ball of light and it seemed expecting of something so the boy went back to watching the lake. "It's a beautiful lake, but is something suppos-" He was then cut off when Atreus clutched his head in pain, thousands of voices screaming in his head, he hasn't felt this since he was in Alfheim with father four Winters ago. The voices were mixed, voices of pain, of hope, of anger, of joy, and fear.
While all this was happening, the lake started glowing with streams of bifrost light rising from it. The tugging feeling from before turned into full on pulling and dragging, this was a lot like when Loki went searching for the lost pieces of the mask. He used all his strength to keep himself from going over the ledge but the ball of light next to him started merging with him, forcing the Champion of the Jötnar to lose his concentration and to be flung off of the cliff, falling into the lake below him, Atreus' only thoughts were of his family and friends. And with a large splash the lake swallowed him beneath the depths and the light of bifrost died down as if nothing happened.
Meanwhile in the Xiao Long-Rose household, Taiyang was setting down a pot of Mistrali pasta on the dining table. It was a good meal to have when there was a raging thunderstorm outside, it was still a little weird how it showed up without any warnings. But he just shrugged the thought as he removed the oven mitts off his hands, "Girls! Dinner's ready! Wash your hands and get down here before it gets cold!" He shouted, He hoped that they had finished their homework before dinner time otherwise they were in for a lot of chores for the next week. But he supposed that he could cut them a break, given that Yang's acceptance letter to Beacon came in yesterday and Ruby's apparent two year skip to enter the school as well at the insistence of Ozpin, so he had let them get ready to leave for the next chapter of their lives.
He just didn't think he would have to let them both go at the same time, sometimes he wishes that Summer was still around to help ease the loneliness. Tai's quiet thinking was interrupted by the quick footsteps coming from upstairs.
"Is that pasta I smell!?" Ruby yelled excitedly as she ran downstairs wearing her red and black combat dress and cape as always, leaving a trail of rose petals behind her, that dang Semblance of her's really makes it annoying for him to clean up.
"Ruby, what did I say about using your Semblance in the house?" Really, he needs his youngest to learn to control herself. Ruby gave a sheepish smile and rubbed the back of her head noticing the trail she left, "Sorry, Dad I won't let it happen again." She apologised.
Taiyang just gave her a skeptical look that just screamed 'really', "And what happened after all those other 'agains' you said, cus' you know you're going to have to clean all that up once dinner's finished."
He smirked when she groaned, dissatisfied with the small chore, and that's when Yang came down still wearing her bomber jacket, boots, and short-shorts, which Tai seriously thought was too much skin she was showing. She clapped her little sister on the back giving a small chuckle, "Dang Rubes, it is just not your day huh?" Her comment only made Ruby's groans worse.
"Well excuse me! It wasn't my fault that I slept in, missed breakfast, and couldn't stay awake in class long enough to avoid all the embarrassment of the gossip going around. I was too excited from beating up bad guys and meeting professor Ozpin for the first time and then getting accepted into Beacon after that! Seriously, who wouldn't lose a couple hours of sleep after all that!" Ruby exclaimed, throwing her arms up.
Yang rolled her eyes at Ruby's childish manner but kept smiling while rubbing her little sister's head much to the latter's chagrin, "Chill sis, besides you're lucky that you got in with me at the same time! It's gotta be fate or something that Headmaster Ozpin saw your potential with Crescent Rose yesterday."
"Yang's right, Ruby, there's nothing to be nervous about. You'll enter Beacon's halls and come out as a top notch Huntress, now come on, food's getting cold."
Just as they were getting ready to dig in, a loud thump alarmed the three of them and heard a softer splashy thud outside.
"What was that? Was that hail?" Ruby asked first, and Taiyang doubted her guess, whatever hit the roof sounded suspiciously like the kind of thud a person would make.
"It couldn't be, it sounded too big for hail. And I think it rolled off and hit the ground outside." Tai concurred with Yang's hypothesis, so he went and grabbed his raincoat to head out to investigate, "Alright, I'll go check it out. You girls stay here I won't be long." After receiving firm nods, he went outside and braced the harsh winds and rain.
Looking in the direction where the 'object' hit the roof and trailing his gaze down he froze, his eyes wide as dinner plates.
Because what he found laying on the wet muddy ground was... a boy. He had a red tunic with gold accents and shoulder pads, he was wearing boots that looked like they made from scratch. He had a bow that appeared archaic with curled gold ends shaped like serpents and a quiver of arrows strapped on his back. And he didn't seem to be moving.
"Oh shit." The former Huntsman acted fast to get the kid inside not a moment sooner, he was considerably light so more easier to pick him up. Quickly getting him in Tai's arms he rushed back into the house.
"Yang, go get some fresh blankets and lay out on the couch." When seeing his daughter not move and stare wide eyed at the boy he repeated himself, "Yang! Blankets! Now!" That time she listened to him and ran to the closet with the spare supplies.
"Ruby, go with your sister and get the first aid kit, this kid might have a serious injury." Ruby shook her head repeatedly and hurried after her sister. While leaving a trail of rose petals in her wake.
Tai mentally groaned, he'll deal with that later. Right now he focused on the boy he held and adjusted the position of his arms to get a better look of the young man's face. There was mud covering his right side but from the looks of the left he had fair complexion and a few scars on the left cheek, brown hair and eyebrows and his hair was cut in a short Mohawk and an average nose. And was that a tattoo on the side of his neck? He shook his head and left that thought for the time being and saw Yang return with the towels, having unfolded them on the living room couch. Taiyang carefully put the boy down taking a step back.
"This guy hit our roof? What was he doing, falling from a Bullhead?" Yang crouched down next to her father and getting a close look at the mysterious boy. Ruby came up to them both with the box of medical supplies.
"Where did he come from? The storm out there is too big for anyone to fly in. Shouldn't we call the hospital or something?" Ruby had a worried look as she set the box down.
Taiyang only shook his head negatively, "We can't, we won't be able to get a signal out with the whether acting up. Like you said it's too big, we'll have to see in the morning if the storm passes. Right now, let's just see if there's any broken bones or any bleeding."
Tai checked over the boy's body, he removed the ornate bow and unstrapped the quiver setting them both on the coffee table. The leather armour looked like it was made of fine material that seemed very expensive. He then noticed the knife attached to the hip and promptly but carefully unsheathed it and placed it with the other weapons. If this kid was training to become a Huntsman, why use a regular bow and arrows?
The boots the young man wore were the opposite of expensive compared to the leather armour, like, they were practically made from scratch. Was he some hardcore survivalist?
The former Huntsman also noticed some more tattoos along the boy's fingers, seriously who was raising this child!
There was some red swelling on the left side of his head, most likely a concussion.
"Alright, besides what looks like a concussion, there's nothing wrong with him. Ruby, hand me some of the medical ointment and bandages." Ruby handed said supplies and started examining the mystery boy's effects.
"It's weird, his weapon doesn't look like it can turn into anything. I can't see any gears or switches for this bow to be a mechashift. Asides from the awesome ornaments and accents this thing has, it just looks... boring." Ruby's face was scrunched up in disappointment of the bow's lack of guns and blades.
She picked up the bow, bouncing it in her hands to test the weight, then started playing with the bowstring. She then proceeded to pull said bowstring back and...
"Ah!" She yelped in surprise, dropping the bow back on the table gaining the attention of her father and sister.
"Ruby! What happened?" Yang asked, wondering what made that strange sound.
"I-It... It did a thing!" She said, pointing at the bow. Her words only confused her family, Yang and Tai looked at each other and back at the only Rose in the house, "A thing? What thing?" The former Huntsman questioned.
Ruby fidgeted in her place, "I was just... fiddling with it, and then when I pulled the string back and let go... it sort of glowed green and made a 'fwoom' sound. And I think I felt vibrations too? Dust can't do that, right?" She asked uncertainly.
Everyone in the room all looked at the one who remained unconscious that would have the answers to their questions.
Taiyang rubbed the back of his neck wondering just who this boy is, "Well, we're going to have to wait until mister archer here wakes up so he can give us the full story." Tai hoped that the concussion wasn't too serious for him to stay knocked out for a few days or worse, best case scenario, the kid would wake up in the morning. Meaning someone will have to keep watch.
"Girls, in case he'll wake up tomorrow I want one of you to look after him, I'll watch over him tonight but I'll be too haggard to have a clear head, okay?" The two of them looked at each other and had determined expressions on their faces when they turned back and gave their nods of confirmation.
"You can count on us, dad. We'll let you know when he starts coming around." Ruby gave her father a confident smile which only lasted a few seconds before her eyes widened, "Oh no! We forgot about the pasta!" She yelled as she was about to dash towards the pot were it not for Yang who hooked onto Ruby's hood making her come to a immediate stop.
"Wow, slow down there, little sis, we can always just reheat it later. And I think our guest here wouldn't be very happy with the state of how dirty his suit's in, cus' that thing is way too fine to stay muddy, ya know what I mean?" She glanced at the boy's attire with a face of pity.
And Tai had to agree with her, if it him he would be distraught at state of his clothing if it were so dirty. So he picked up a fresh towel and got to work. And then noticed Zwei licking the kid's hand, "No, Zwei! Don't lick him, he's got mud all over him!"
~•••~
Everything was in chaos, buildings were damaged and burning down, black beasts with bone like armour and red eyes were terrorising the people and reeking havoc on whatever was in their path. Atreus was running down a smooth grey stone road dodging and shooting at the black beasts that got too close. He then met up with a girl that had black, red tipped hair holding a giant scythe in her hands.
"Atreus! You're alright! There's too many Grimm, we're going to get outnumbered if this keeps up. Do you think you could lend a hand?" She asked while she bisected one of the black creatures that looked oddly like a Wolvr.
"I'm sorry, but I can't. I have to get to the CCTS, I think whoever's behind all this is there! I can maybe take them down and make them answer for what they've done, but I promise I'll come back and help you just hold on for little longer. I'm sorry." He resumed his sprint towards a tall tower, even as the girl called out to him. the tower's top was broken apart, Atreus then leaped into the air and started flying higher and higher until he reached said top where he saw two women fighting.
One had raven black hair and wore a short red dress, while the other had red hair and wore bronze like armour.
The red haired girl threw a shield at her opponent while the latter fired an arrow that went through the shield and struck the Spartan like warrior in her ankle making her kneel.
Panic spread through Atreus as he watched the dark haired woman approach the downed fighter and then formed a bow that was aimed at the girl's chest.
'No!' Atreus' mind screamed as he swooped down to intervene.
~•••~
Atreus slowly began to open his eyes as they were trying to adjust to the brightness of his surroundings. His head was really sore, like, 'pounding in his head' sore. Was this what Thor felt like after he got drunk? Actually, it might've been worse than this, he could already tell.
"Hey, he's starting to wake up." A faint feminine voice called out. Wait, who was that?
Atreus looked up and saw a blurry figure of a woman that he couldn't completely make out, but he could tell was that she had long blonde hair and lilac coloured eyes which were warm and kind when looked at.
"Hey, it's okay. You're alright, just had a nasty bump on the head but you'll pull through." She said calmly and reassuringly, almost just like...
"Mom?" The young Jötun croaked out, feeling like the world has just granted him the greatest wish he could have asked for. How, why, he had so many questions he wanted to ask her.
"Uh... nope." She said popping the P a little, "Sorry dude, but I ain't your mom." She told him, and then Atreus's vision got a whole lot clearer and saw that the girl above him was not in fact his mother, but rather a total stranger instead. "Ah!" The boy yelped as he recoiled into the sofa with surprised widened eyes as he took in the rest of his surroundings, he was in a house that looked very well kept with some furniture that some appeared super smooth and others comfortable to sit in, as well as a large blue pane of glass that was supported on the wall.
Remembering the stranger in front of him, he reached for his knife only to find it wasn't there.
The blonde girl raised her hands in a placating manner trying to not appear hostile, "Wow, calm down! You're safe, okay? No one's gonna hurt you, we promise." She then motioned her hand for two others to approach. One of them was an older man that had some disheveled lighter blonde hair and looked sleep deprived, there was a tattoo on his right arm which almost made out to be a exotic shape of a heart with a metal pauldron on his shoulder. While his left arm adorned a orange cloth tied around his bicep. He was holding a small tankard that looked it was made from a smooth shiny white material and had something steaming in it. He wore strange clothing that Atreus couldn't identify, well he could tell that the man was wearing shorts and a vest, he just didn't know what kind of style it was, and the other was... why does she look familiar?
Her outfit consisted of black and reds, she wore a long sleeved shirt with a high collar and had red trim on the sleeves, over it was a black waist cincher with red laces tying it together and a matching skirt with red lining. She also wore some kind of super long black socks and her boots were black that looked to be of a much better quality than everyone else's back home, like her cincher they had red laces and the soles were red. Basically she could only be described as red and black. Her hair was neck length which was black with red tips fading out as they went up. Her eye colour though was a shining silver, he swear he could see his reflection in them!
Atreus looked back at the blonde girl to finally take note of her attire. She had a tan brown shoulder puffed, short sleeved jacket with a yellow top that had a partially concealed emblem which also revealed some cleavage, and wore a orange scarf around her neck. Her waist was exposed in the form of a midriff but below it was a pleated tan brown belt with an emblem of a... fiery heart, he guessed? Were those... shorter... shorts? Her whole legs were practically exposed! Atreus could think of a dozen ways to incapacitate her with his knife alone given the openings she was presenting. Anyway, her boots reached up to her knees with orange socks reaching higher except for the right one. Was this a type of fashion he wasn't aware of?
The blonde girl then stretched her hand out to the archer, "Look, why don't we start with names. I'm Yang Xiao Long, this is my little sister Ruby, and that's our dad. What do we call you?" The girl named Yang said in a friendly manner, still keeping her hand out.
They seemed friendly enough and glancing down at the small table next to them were where his equipment is, that was a sign of trust for him to let his guard down a little, though the part of her last name was a little weird. He took Yang's hand and was hoisted up on his feet, "I'm Atreus, and it's nice to meet you." He introduced himself, which garnered bright smiles from them, "Nice to meet you too. Funny name though, can't say I ever heard of it." This however prompted Atreus to adopt a puzzled look, what's wrong with his name?
"What about your last name, kid?" Their father finally spoke, his eyebrow raised inquisitively. Atreus didn't know why his name opted such confusion for these people but he supposed there was no harm in telling them his full name. Now, normally back home people's last names had their parents first names as one part and had either 'son' at the end of it if they were a boy or 'dottir' if they were a girl, should he use his father's name or his mother's? Eh, Laufeyson sounds better than Kratosson, he hoped father wouldn't be upset.
"It's Laufeyson, Atreus Laufeyson. Why?" They all stared at him until they all, minus Ruby, burst out laughing. What was so funny? Were they laughing at his name? What was wrong with Laufeyson? It was his mother's name. They didn't know it was his mother's but still!
Ruby, having decided to speak up now, had a confused look on her face. "Uhh, what does Laufeyson mean? It doesn't have a colour meaning." Wait, a colour meaning? That's what the other two thought was so funny, his name didn't match a colour? Did they have colour schemed names? That was actually quite interesting, and made sense when he looked at Ruby.
"Oh, you guys name yourselves after colours, that's actually pretty cool. Um, I'm not named like any of you, nor are the people back where I'm from are." The two blondes stopped laughing as they listened with new interest, so Loki continued, "You see, Laufey was my mother's name, so our naming conventions consisted of our parent' first names. You get it?"
"That's..." Yang's father started, sounding skeptical, but then had a look of mild surprise. "...Actually a very convenient way to keep your family name alive." He said, his face entering a deep pondering.
This surprised the two sisters at their father's acceptance of a foreign tradition, "So, where are you from anyway that you have a totally different naming system than us? Cus' we couldn't gather much from you while you were knocked out." Yang curiously asked.
"Oh, right, I'm from Midgard." Atreus said, perhaps they could tell him what realm he's currently in and find a Mystic Gateway to use to get home, it would be nice to everyone again. Father, Freya, Mimir. Unfortunately the furrowed expression they had said otherwise, "You're from where now?" Ruby said, looking much more confused than before, did they not know what Midgard was?
"M-Midgard, one of the nine realms? The realms that are held by Yggdrasil, the world tree?" That only made their brows furrow more, "Y'know, the realms? That were once ruled by Odin? King of the Æsir?" There was still no reaction, "What about Ragnarök? You've gotta know about Ragnarök." If they did, then they didn't show it. At this point, everyone was now very confused, why didn't they know anything about what he was talking about.
Yang glanced over at her family and back at Atreus, then she sounded her words slowly, "Ok? You're from... another world? Out of... nine, in total? I think you hit your head harder than we thought." Her idea of him making it up left an uncomfortable feeling in his chest like it just got tighter and harder to breathe, he was going to refute it until Ruby spoke again.
"Wait, wouldn't that explain how he fell on our roof? And what about his bow? It clearly isn't infused with Dust and I double checked. What if Atreus is telling the truth?" Her reasoning did have some solid points that no one could ignore, he didn't know how dust was involved with his bow but that's a question for later. Wait a minute.
"Did you say I fell on your roof?" He incredulously asked, which she nodded in confirmation, "Yep, there was a massive thunderstorm outside last night and we were about to have dinner until we heard something crash above us. Dad found you lying in the mud unconscious and brought you in." Atreus touched his head remembering a little bit of falling and lightning being around him. "And not to mention how you played with his bow." Yang teased under her breath, earning a little wack from her blushing sister.
And that's when it finally clicked in Atreus' head, the ball of bifrost light! "That's it, I remember now! There was this floating ball of light that was leading me to a cliff. There was a lake and then... I heard all those voices, I was in so much pain and then... I fell." Atreus had been pacing around during his recollection and came to a stop, "And I was still falling. But how did that work?" He asked himself.
"Wait, what did you say she did with my bow?" The young god questioned the elder sister, who was raising mischievous grin on her face. Much to horror of the younger sibling, "Oh, I can tell you lots of what she did last night. In fact she-" she was cut off by Ruby as she clamped her hands tightly on Yang's mouth. "YangshutupIdidn'tdoanythingdon'ttellliestosomeonewejustmetIjustwantedtoknowwhathisbowcoulddoanditdidwhatitdid!" Holy shit, she can talk fast, Atreus could only pick apart pieces of what she just said. Those came out like rapid fire. And it was quite amusing.
Yang managed to pry her madly blushing sister's vice like grip off her face with a hearty laugh, "Oh, calm down, Ruby, I was only joking. And besides, I'm sure Atreus here is able to tell that you wouldn't such indecent things, right?" She said that last part pointedly to the archer.
It was Loki's turn to blush as rubbed the back of his neck, "Um, yeah, no of course I knew you wouldn't do anything... wrong with my stuff." He could feel how awkward this had just become, so he needed to change that. "Ahem, uh speaking of which, could I have my weapons back, please?" He asked, tentatively. The girls' father cleared his throat, gaining Atreus' attention.
"Well, I guess you can. But on one condition." The man said while crossing his arms, "If you really are from 'another world', then you're gonna have to tell us your whole life story and that bow of yours does. Because I still don't buy it, despite the fact you fell from the sky, with a raging thunderstorm happening at the same time." His voice displayed his skepticism, leaving the young man to cringe as he guessed how his story of falling into a lake, that somehow transported him here sounded. "And Yang, don't tease him. I don't like it, he looks to be as young as Ruby and you putting moves on him just disturbs me." He sternly said and shuddered at the thought of her flirting with Atreus. And, ooh boy, does the mischievous god have a lot to tell.
Aaaaand that's chapter one! I have to say, it was a little difficult trying to write sentences without them seeming repetitive but I think I did ok. Atreus is now in Remnant and has been introduced to Ruby, Yang and Tai set a week before going to Beacon, leaving plenty of time to explain things and meet new people like a certain wizard we all know.
I just want to let everyone know in advance that I'll be taking away Atreus' Bitter Squirrel runic spell for certain reasons that will be told in future chapters.
If any of you have any advice for me to make dialogue or narrative sentences more fleshed out I would be thankful.
And one more thing before I go, I will not write any pairings in this story with Atreus. There may be some flirting but nothing committed, I ship Atreus and Angrboda and that is final. But that being said, I will make other ships more... early canon lets say, like for a couple of bees.
And one other thing, it's a bit hard to type in Norse characters using Alt codes on my laptop on this website since it sometimes resets my work to before I wrote something down which depressing to me. And I can't use said characters on my phone since they're not available, because why not so I'll be switching platforms from time to time. So yeah, that's about does it, I will see you all in the next chapter. PEACE!!
P.S side note here, I may add some characters in the story and I'll leave the guessing to you, Byyyee!
