Once upon a time, which is the usual story line for this kind of scenario...
Back in a world beyond our own. A world where the myths and legends of old resided in, was a world of mystics and magics.There were three ruling powers:
The Fairfolk: beings born of pure magic and users of magic like fairies, elves, goblins, gnomes
The Titans: Gods among mortals that gave magic as a gift to those among who could or choose to wield it like Wizards, Witches, Sorcerers, etc
The Celestials: the Mapmakers of the Heavens, who never ventured to the world below, believing the people to be small and savage.
It was a time of magic and wonderment, exploration of new lands and possibilities. And with it, peace as well.
But something happened. The sun and moon... wept each a tear. They were known as the Sun Drop and the Moonstone. Two polar opposites in power but equal in quality and quantity. And it was believed that whoever possessed these two artifacts would have dominion over life and death.
Sadly, this power brought about a great danger amongst the lands.
And Zhan Tiri, a Warlock from the Dark Dimension, crossed over to this world, and attempted to control not just these two stones, but also all magic. Believing they themselves were worthy to harness all of it, the Warlock wasted no time in attempted to enslave the people or the inhabitances. The Titans were the first to fall at Zhan Tiri's power, and the Fairfolk all but scattered.
But it was only Lord Demanitus, an Alchemist who studied in the Alchemical and Mystic Arts, banded together a group of warriors and Magic Users to face against the Warlock, with the Vestiges of Kama-Taj: Ancient Weapons and Artifacts that could defeat the Gods. They defeated and banished the Warlock, forever banishing her in the Dark Realm to which she laid waste to.
With the Warlock gone, the lands were able to heal again, but nothing was ever the same.
With the Titans gone, their ancient ways were gone, and the Fairfolk scattered and hidden, all magic in the world faded to legend and then to myth.
But myths and Fairy Tales, when forgotten... are often at their most strongest.
