No one knew what caused it, some people say that it was their own damn government's fault for doing secret experiments. Other people say it was spread from a previously unknown virus carried by mice.
However, those true theories aren't true and it was spread false information by a few trusted people working for the government so it won't cause a stir and mayhem among people around the world. The real cause of these supernatural abilities or quirks was a secret war between the mutants and the race of Inhuman.
From what we gather in some reports, Mutants were humans born with the X-Gene and it was a secret population of two hundred who wanted a normal life. Inhumans were humans that were kidnapped and experimented on by aliens called kree thus becoming their own race.
A few reports from a diary on how the war started between these two special different superhumans were destroyed but from what we gather, the secret war was deadly and many died from the war. Mutants left for the war, leaving their family behind, One example from the side of the mutants, is the luminescent baby, born from a human mother who was secretly married to a mutant man.
The ones that unexpectedly have these powers all over the world were caused by a gas called terrigent Mist. We don't know it yet since the reports were destroyed.
Since these secrets are locked up and confidential for the good of the world to never be thrown out. Before long, supernatural abilities became normal and dreams become reality. This damn world became a superhuman society with only 80% of the population with uncanny ability.
