When he sees the bouquet of pretty orange, pink, and yellow flowers at the store while picking up groceries, Jamie knows right away that he has to get it for Mason. He doesn't know why or what for, just that he has to buy them. He can't walk past the flowers, let alone leave the store without them.

He has a smile on his face the whole drive home.

Until he realizes he forgot the bread, which is one of the things he went to the store for in the first place. With a sigh, he drives back to the store to pick up the bread.

They don't usually have flowers, so the crystal vase Jamie's mom gave them for their wedding is tucked safely away in their china cabinet. He takes it out now, fills it with water, and adds the plant food that came with the flowers. Following the instructions, Jamie cuts the bottoms of the stems off to open the veins and let the flowers drink the water.

He takes a step back to assess the flowers, rearranges them a little, then checks again. Once it's up to his standard, he leaves the flowers be, and goes back to his studio to do more work.

He forgets about the flowers until Mason comes home from work hours later. Hearing the front door open and close, Jamie pushes back from his desk and rubs his eyes. He stretches, and his back cracks in a few places.

As he steps out of his studio into the main area of their apartment, he hears Mason say, "Oh no."

He frowns and scans the room, looking for what elicited that response as soon as his husband entered their home. "What? What's wrong?"

Mason points to the bouquet of flowers on the counter. "What am I forgetting?"

"Oh." Jamie laughs. "That."

He could put Mason out of his misery and tell him the flowers are 'just because,' but the furrow between Mason's eyebrows as he thinks is too adorable.

"It's not either our birthdays, and I know it's not our anniversary."

"Nope."

"Did you get promoted?"

"I wish."

"Did I get promoted?"

"How would I know that before you?"

"I don't know!" Mason says, throwing his hands up. "I don't know why there are flowers on our counter either, if we're making a list."

"Any more guesses?"

"Is it some kind of holiday I don't know about or forgot?"

"Nope!"

Mason growls, deep and low, and Jamie laughs. Cupping his husband's face with both hands, he rubs their noses together. "They're JC flowers."

"JC?"

"Just cause. I got them for you because I could, and I love you."

The expression on Mason's face is both fond and exasperated. A tilt of the head, a little smile, and a knowing look with arched eyebrows. Jamie is familiar with that expression. He laughs again and kisses Mason softly.

"So, I didn't forget anything?"

"Nope."

Mason rolls his eyes and places a hand on the small of Jamie's back to tug him in for another kiss, this one longer than the last.

"Do you like them?"

Mason nods, resting his forehead against Jamie's. "Yeah. I do. Thank you."

"You're welcome."

"I love you."

"I love you too."
