AN: Hello Everyone,
This is a repost of a story that I have published in it's entirety over on AO3. I decided to start posting it here as well, and will be publishing a few chapters a week (though the first two chapters will both go up on here today). I'll be uploading the other stuff on here that I've already published on AO3, as well as any future fics that I publish over there (I'll also be preserving as much from the Author's notes from there as well).
Without further ado, There is the first chapter of Time Brings All to Pass
Chapter 1: Change
"I. Haven't. Changed."
Sasha Waybright was many things. She was crafty and manipulative, she was surprisingly strong for someone her age, she was a quick learner when it came to swordplay, she had a complex about people thinking her hair was dyed, and the list went on and on and on.
Her being so averse to change that she was reluctant to even pretend she's changed as part of a larger plan was just another thing to add to the list.
"Well, your friends need to think you have." Grime stated, using the mirror in the guest room they were staying in to make sure his dress cloak was on properly. "If you don't stay chummy with them, then our plans are shot."
Grime turned to face the teenager. "So please, be on your best behaviour tonight."
Sasha would not comment on how much he sounded like a dad in that moment, mostly because she would die before ever admitting that she had started to see the toad as a father figure.
"Pfft, I had them eating out of my hand at the third temple, and this is just a dinner party." Sasha began, dismissive of any concerns Grime had about tonight "And once we rule Amphibia, I'll get this friendship back under control."
Sasha knew her friendship with Marcy and Anne was not in the same condition it had been when they had been brought to Amphibia. Back on Earth, she had it under control and her two friends were pretty much ready to do anything she had asked them to.
Well except Marcy whenever she got in the zone.
Inside, Sasha knew that once she was able to take over an entire kingdom, her friends would remember how awesome she really was, and that whatever changes they may have gone through in Amphibia, that it was still Sasha who knew what was best for them. Then they'd fall back into line and everything could go back to the way it was.
Of course, it wouldn't be exactly the way it was before, since she would now be ruling a kingdom alongside Grime. And hey, she could easily give them new spots in the regime. With the music box they could even commute to Amphibia from Earth. Marcy could remain a ranger and go out on various quests like in the video games she played, sometimes with Sasha and Anne accompanying her, and sometimes with them staying back and doing other work. Alone. Sitting close to each other. Maybe working late into the night by candle light. Their hands accidently brushing against each other, both blushing at the contact but moving closer, Anne resting her head against Sasha's shoulder…
OK cool your jets Waybright, planning a successful rebellion and getting Anne and Marcy to be OK with it when they're friends with the king your overthrowing is complicated enough without having to think about your crush on Anne.
Truth be told, the crush that Sasha had on one of her best friends had been a potential complication since the moment she had first realised it existed several years ago, and which only became more complicated the more time that she and Anne spent in Amphibia. She had done well to keep her feelings in check and from interfering in her and Grime's plan for the rebellion, at least until a few days ago when she had a rather silly and embarrassing dream that she would never repeat to anyone.
Across the room, Grime was obviously less confident about Sasha's ability to keep her friends under her control after the rebellion, or even possibly after tonight with how she's been acting. "Just watch that temper of yours."
"Grimesey, I've got this" Sasha said as she stood up, "everyone will find me vulnerable, unguarded, and totally sweet." As she spoke, Sasha did a small twirl and curtsey with her cloak, to emphasis her point.
Grime was still not impressed.
"Could you at least remove the sword?"
Sasha was not happy about that comment. She had, much to her own surprise, turned out to absolutely love having a sword with her, and edged weapons in general really. It was to the point that she had pretty much only ever removed the sword she wore at her hip when she was showering or bathing, and otherwise made sure she had it at all times.
Oh well, at least he's not asking me to leave the hidden daggers
She removed the sword and scabbard from her belt, and turned to put it on the couch she had been sitting on moments ago.
As she turned however, a blinding light suddenly took her vision.
"What the heck is that?!" She yelled, throwing up one of her arms in a futile attempt to shield her eyes from the blinding light while the other continued to clutch her sword.
"I have no idea!" replied Grime, also using an arm to protect his one good eye.
Before any more words could be exchanged, Sasha suddenly felt herself being pulled towards the light.
"Grime, what's going on?" she asked panicking, hoping to get some other answer than another 'I have no idea'.
"Lieutenant?" Grime asked, struggling to make out Sasha through the blinding light.
The pull suddenly became much stronger, and Sasha was forced from the ground into the air towards the light faster than she could react.
She reached behind herself in a desperate attempt to grab onto something to keep her in the room. "Grime!" She called out, hoping that the toad would somehow be able to grab her and keep this light from pulling her away.
"Lieutenant!" Grime yelled, trying to reach out to the figure he could barely make out being yanked into the mysterious light. But he was too late. He could just barely make out the figure of his second in command being sucked into the heart of the blinging light, and then it disappeared along with her.
Grime stood alone in the room, unable to grasp exactly what had happened.
"L-lieutenant?" He asked to the room, hoping for an answer he knew would not come.
"SASHA!" he called out, no longer in desperate hopes for an answer, but in fear and desperation for a friend that disappeared into nothing in front of him.
Sasha was pretty sure that she was having a bad day.
First, she had to spend the day in some hick town, then Grime pretty well lectured her on how to behave at dinner when she was the one who had to teach him something as basic as complimenting his soldiers to get them to want to do stuff for him, and then some weird light came out of nowhere and sucked her away to who knows where.
She opened her eyes to the world around her, now able to see again without that light all but blinding her.
Please tell me I didn't get sent to another world where humanoid animals run the planet, going to one of those is more than enough.
As she took in her surroundings, she realised that she was sitting on some type of stage, with machines all standing around her, various cables and wires connecting them to each other in this room, with only the light from the machines providing illumination.
As she continued to look around the room, or cave as the rocky walls seemed to indicate, her eyes landed on the only other occupant, standing with a hooded cloak obscuring their face in front of what Sasha had to assume was some sort of, pedestal, which Sasha assumed was some kind of control panel for the machines. A control panel that was distracting this mystery person from realising that they weren't alone in the cave.
Well, hopefully I can get some answers about this place.
Sasha began to stand up, making a point to keep as quiet as possible, despite the armour that she wore. She was thankful that she held onto her sword throughout this weird experience as she grasped the hilt in her hand and began to slowly draw it from its sheath.
As she did so, she took note of the person standing before her.
They are way too tall to be a Frog or a Toad. A Newt maybe? Am I even still in Amphibia? If not, then they could be anything, even another human.
Who or whatever they were, they were far too focused on the control panel and, mumbling something that Sasha couldn't quite catch, to notice her inching ever so closer. Step after quiet step, she moved closer and closer to figure before her.
Unfortunately for the blond, as she moved her foot to take another silent step closer, a small rock was dislodged by the movement, and rolled across the ground. The figure took note of this and began to look up. However, Sasha's reaction to that noise was far faster.
Knowing that she would be noticed, she rushed forward, easily able to get right next to the figure before they could react.
"Alright you weirdo" Sasha said, her sword now leveled at the figures neck "you're going to tell me what the heck is going on here or…"
Sasha ended up cutting herself off before she could go any further. She was close enough that she could know get a look at the face under the mystery figures hood. She was taller than she was supposed to be, hair longer too, but there was no mistaking who this was.
"Marcy?" Sasha asked as she lowered her sword.
The girl in front of her stepped back, and Sasha noticed for the first time that she looked terrified.
"Marcy, what's going on?" she asked stepping forward. Marcy only took another step back. And then tripped and fell backwards. Because of course she did.
Sasha's palm met her face as she let out a small growl of frustration and then leaned down to get eye level with her friend.
"Marcy. Clam down, and just tell me what the heck is going on." Frustration was very evident in the blond's voice, even as she offered a hand to try and help her friend up.
Across from her, a change occurred to Marcy's expression. The look of fear seemed to be briefly replaced with a look of confusion, before she turned her head to look at the machine. When she turned back to Sasha, the blond felt like Marcy actually recognized her for the first time since she appeared in the strange room.
"Sasha." Marcy stated, disbelief noticeable in her voice. Very quickly, however, disbelief disappeared from her voice and was replaced with unparalleled excitement.
"Oh my Frog! It's really you! This is amazing!" the Taiwanese girl all but shouted as she jumped up, seemingly oblivious to Sasha's attempts to try and help her up.
Marcy ran over to the machine, excitement seeming to burst from within her. "This means it must have worked, this is so amazing!"
"Marcy-" Sasha began, trying to get the girls attention, but she wasn't able to finish before Marcy rushed back to her and pulled her into a hug.
"I can't believe this actually worked, this like the greatest thing to ever happen!" Marcy continued her ramblings, oblivious to how fed-up Sasha was getting.
"Marcy, tell me what is going o-"
"Wait, wait, wait" Marcy continued her ramblings and once more cut Sasha off as she pulled away from her "I need to figure out when you came from. What was the last thing that happened to you?"
Sasha looked at her friend, her rage continuing to build. "The last thing that happened? The last thing that happened, was that I was getting ready for that stupid dinner with Anne's stupid frog family, when a freaking giant light sucked me into who knows where and then you kept refusing to tell me what the heck. Is. Going. on!"
The force in Sasha's voice seemed to get the message across to Marcy that the former cheerleader was not going to wait any longer for an explanation, at least that seemed to be the case from the look of fear that briefly crossed her face.
"R-right, sorry Sash" she said apologetically.
Sasha merely continued to level a look at her, one that expressed again that she wanted an explanation.
"So, I'm just going to ask that you not freak out, because this might be the biggest thing to have ever happened to any of us."
Sasha raised an eyebrow at that, considering that they had all been transported to another world already, the bar was set pretty high for big things happening to the three of them.
"You," Marcy continued, "are in THE FUTURE!"
"Sasha, come back" Marcy called out to blond walking towards the caves exit.
Sasha would not listen to her. It was obvious that Marcy was far too caught up in some new sci-fi, fantasy, nerd thing to realise what was actually happening, and so talking to her would be useless. That was the only logical explanation for her claiming that Sasha was somehow in the future.
"Sasha, please come back" Marcy once again called out to her.
"No, Marcy" Sasha responded without turning around or breaking her pace.
She could hear Marcy quicken her own pace to catch up with her.
"Sasha" she once again called out, not able to say anything more then Sasha's name before the girl in question rounded on her
"No Marcy!" She began, the tone of her voice making it painfully obvious how done with this day she was. "I don't care how much you try to explain it to me, there is no possible way that I'm going to accept that a 13-year-old kid-"
"14 now actually"
"13-year-old kid" Sasha made sure to emphasize those words after Marcy's interruption "somehow built a time machine and brought me into the future!"
Marcy tried to say something in response but Sasha turned back around and began walking again, not wanting to hear whatever ramblings were about to come out of her clearly delusional friend.
Marcy continued to chase after Sasha, trying to get her to listen to ramblings that Sasha could only describe as mad, even as Sasha stepped out into the light of day.
And as she stepped out into that light, Sasha was forced to take in the world around her.
The sky was the first thing she noticed. It was a disgustingly muted brown, more the colour of swamp water then the blue that it had been before. More than that, it was dotted with what appeared to be some kind of airship, the kind that was way beyond what anyone in Amphibia should have been capable of making.
As she looked over the horizon, she could see desolate field of dying grass, with some sort of craters and rubble littered throughout. What should have been a river in that field now looked like it was dump for some kind of toxic waste. She could also see the remains of a forest, now reduced to row after row of stumps. The only structures that looked intact were some types of machinery that Sasha could only guess the purpose of.
"Wh-where am I?" Sasha asked aloud.
"This spot doesn't have an actual name" Marcy answered, startling Sasha who had all but forgotten her friend was there after taking in the horrid sight of this world.
"It's a pretty secluded spot, which is why I picked in the first place. It's about 2-3 days west of Wartwood, depending on how fast you travel"
Sasha looked at her, dumbfounded by one very particular word in that sentence.
"Wartwood? Yo-you can't mean that this is Amphibia." It simply didn't make sense to Sasha. Sure, Amphibia had its darker parts, but the world was pretty vibrant and lively, and didn't have airships. This wasn't possible.
Unless….
"Marcy" Sasha began, her face paling as realisation dawned on her "Is this actually the future?"
"I know that this is a lot to take in." Marcy put her hand on Sasha's shoulder, an attempt to comfort her friend. "But, yeah. Your about 1 year in the future."
Sasha looked at her friend, and then went sat down on the nearest rock she could find.
"I-I don't understand" she began, trying to make sense of it all.
How could Marcy build a time machine? What could do this much damage to Amphibia in just 1 year? What happened to Grime? What are those air ships looking things?
Question after question filled her mind.
Finally, she asked the ones that stuck out above all the others.
"Where's Anne? Is she OK?"
"She's back in Wartwood, and she's doing fine" Sasha breathed a sigh of relief at hearing that Answer from Marcy.
Sasha took another second to collect her thoughts and then asked her next question.
"Marcy, what…what happened to this place?"
Marcy's face cringed at that question and she hesitated to speak. It was obvious to Sasha that Marcy didn't want to tell her, which probably meant that she wouldn't like it.
"Well," she began, "you see-well it's sort of like-or no, maybe I should start at-er well, I mean-"
"Marcy!" Sasha all but yelled, snapping the girl out of ramblings. "I am kind trying to deal with this absolutely insane situation right now, so can you please do me a favor and actually tell me why this place looks like it got hit by the apocalypse!"
Marcy looked at her friend and then sighed. "The thing that happened to Amphibia was, well, you."
Sasha stared at Marcy, not understanding what she just said. "What do you mean me?"
"The you here in the future" Marcy began, rather sheepishly, "is kind of the tyrant Queen of Amphibia".
Seconds passed as Sasha stared at her friend, a blank look on her face and a nervous one on Marcy's.
Finally, Sasha could finally give her response. "What?"
AN: So I hope you all liked that, and I would appreciate any feedback that you can offer.
I should also note that my main inspiration for this work actually came from the piece of fan art I'm using for the cover image, it's by Sparky_whyte over on the Amphibia subreddit.
Anyways, thank you for reading and I'll see you all for the next chapter which should be up in the next few minutes.
