Note: This fanfic takes place after The Dream Parts 1 & 2 and The Date.

The quick synopsis: Abigail Baker has a certain kind of dream about a certain boss of hers, Commissioner Frank Reagan. After a flustered day at work she admits it to him and he takes the opportunity to express his mutual feelings for her. They go on their first date in "The Date" and this story picks up the very next morning…

THE MORNING AFTER

Abigail Baker walked through the revolving doors at One PP.

Wondering how this day was going to go.

She barely slept at all the previous night. Visions of her and the Commissioner making out in the dimly lit parking garage kept her up.

His lips on hers. His engulfing embrace. She had almost lost it when he started kissing her neck…

Now it was time to face the music.

The awkward music.

Of working so closely together and having to be completely secretive about their new…what would you call it, relationship ?

She didn't know what to define it as.

She walked around the corner to the elevator.

Oh great she thought as she put on a big smile.

Lt. Gormley, DCPI Garrett Moore, and the Commissioner were all standing in front of the elevator doors waiting to go up.

They all greeted each other hello and stepped into the elevator.

Geez this was so awkward…Abigail thought to herself as she kept her eyes mostly focused forward as they went up.

She felt that if she looked over at the Commissioner she would somehow get them found out…

And damn why did he have to be wearing that sharp blue tie with his black pinstriped 3-piece suit today?

She sighed as she kept her wavering eyes forward.

She just wanted to be in his arms again. This was going to be a looong day…

Frank Reagan knew that he had to keep his wits about him today.

Be on his toes.

He couldn't let it appear to be anything different than any other normal day in the working relationship between him and Baker.

Unfortunately, being in such a high position, constantly under the public eye of scrutiny, he didn't dare risk anyone knowing what had transpired between him and his right hand.

It was hard dropping Baker off at her apartment the night before.

Acting as if nothing had happened between them.

It was really hard.

He barely slept that night. His mind repeating their encounters over and over…

His mind flashed back to very early that morning.

He had a thought that his father, the former Police Commissioner, already knew something was up.

And that Henry was already halfway there to guessing who that something was.

In the middle of the night he had gone to their kitchen and poured himself a glass of whiskey.

Thinking it would help him fall asleep and not be so focused on what had happened in his office…in the elevator…and in the parking garage.

But it had only seemed to intensify his over-active mind.

Henry had come downstairs, hair dishelved, wearing his bathrobe, and decided to join him for a drink.

"Something's on your mind," his father had said.

Frank only grunted in reply and took a swallow from his glass.

"I know when I hear the pacing, and the cabinet doors slamming, that something's bothering you…" Henry continued.

"Oh sorry Pop, I didn't realize how loud I was being," Frank rubbed his tired eyes.

"Ahh it's nothing." Henry looked him straight in the eyes and suddenly smiled.

"It's not about a case, is it?" he asked leaning in eagerly as he hit the nail on the head.

Frank sighed deeply and pushed his drink back.

"No. No Pop, it's not. But it's a tough situation nonetheless." He changed his mind and brought his drink back for another sip.

"Things have…" he chose his words very carefully, "shifted at work," his eyes stayed down looking at the table.

His father was good, too good at police work and he was trying his darndest to keep him from guessing what had "shifted" exactly.

His father took a sip from his own drink. "I see."

Frank continued still not really looking at Henry. "I just know that tomorrow morning it will be different. And it's going to be more challenging."

There was a pause before Henry spoke again and Frank looked up.

"And is that challenge worth it to you, then?"

Frank blinked in surprise. He wasn't sure if his father had already figured it out. But his phrasing caught him by surprise nevertheless.

"Yes." He caught himself just in time before he said "she". "Yes…it is."

Admitting it out loud felt like a great anvil weight had been lifted off his chest.

Standing up he dumped the rest of his drink into the sink and turned back, "Thanks Pop. This helped."

Henry smiled knowingly.

The four of them stepped off the elevator and Gormley, Garrett, and the Commissioner walked into his office.

Baker settled in at her desk.

Their morning meeting would be soon.

She hoped it would be centered on something so interesting that it would keep her mind off of everything else.

It was bad enough the day before when she had the Dream on her mind.

Now her thoughts had something tangible. Something real to play upon.

And all her monkey mind wanted to do was replay last night's steamy events.

Over and over and over…
