Nozomi is Fem Yugi, and is Vil's cousin through their grandmother.
To say that Vil had been having an off week was an understatement. First had been dealing with Epel, a freshman of his dorm. While he had great potential, he was still very unpolished and needed a lot of coaching before he was even remotely acceptable to his standards.
Then had been the unexpected surge of magic from Heartsabyl three days in. Vil still hadn't gotten any answers about that and Riddle was being unusually tight lipped an refused to speak about the matter. Then again, two of his dorm had caused an untold amount of trouble in their first week...first by accidentally burning a statue of the Seven and then the near destruction of a treasured artifact.
He could have handled all that if not for one thing.
His baby sister hadn't called him at all in a week. Technically she was his cousin, but they had always considered each other more like siblings.
He decided to visit the cafeteria, as he wasn't in the mood to care about his diet and just needed some comfort food. He was seriously worried about his sister, as she almost never went a week like this without sending him a message.
He made it about two steps from the food table before he was unceremoniously tackled to the ground.
"Onii-san!"
Vil looked down in stunned disbelief.
"Nozomi?!"
Complete shock and silence. No one could believe someone had literally just tackled another person to the ground like that without a second thought, let alone a housewarden like Vil.
"Nyahaha...look at his face! He didn't see that coming!" cackled the unruly familiar that had disrupted the ceremony a week ago.
"Roi du Poison, are you alright?" asked Rook. He looked ready to discipline the unruly freshman if given even the slightest word.
"I'm fine. More importantly why are you here and wearing a uniform?" said Vil to the girl hugging him tightly and not letting go.
"I jokingly put in an application, and the carriage picked me up eight days ago. I've been trying to find you all week, but your dorm is surprisingly tight lipped about your schedule," pouted the girl.
Vil took a good look at his sister. Her red and gold hair were tied up in a messy ponytail, which didn't help much with how ridiculously spiky it was. She wore a pendant that Vil knew perfectly well was made of pure gold, and used to be inside a box their grandfather had brought back from Egypt. The Night Raven uniform was second hand, but she was wearing it properly and she had lightly dusted make-up on.
Her wide vibrant amethyst colored eyes stared at him with open relief and joy at having surprised him so thoroughly.
Vil managed to get up at least, once the shock had worn off.
"Why didn't you call me to let me know you were here?" he asked.
"I forgot my phone charger, and my battery died after the first day," Nozomi pouted. "Then I got caught up trying not to get expelled because the mirror seemed to think I have no magic."
"Wait. Are you part of the trio of troublemakers that I've been hearing about all week?" said Vil suspiciously. Nozomi looked away, and Vil pinched her cheek, hard. "Why is it you always seem to get into trouble?"
"At least it wasn't his fault this time! And I didn't have to duel anyone to handle it!" she pouted.
"Uh...how do you two know each other?" asked Ace, bewildered.
"Vil's my older brother," said Nozomi cheerfully. "I've been trying to find him all week since the ceremony, but his schedule is so busy that I haven't had any luck."
"Do you have any idea how worried I was when I didn't hear from you the entire time?" he said annoyed. "I'm just glad you're safe."
In Pomefiore
Nozomi looked around in Pomefiore...Vil's descriptions and limited photos didn't do it justice. He had taken one look at Ramshackle's accommodations and had immediately refused to let her or Grim stay another night, since he was her familiar.
Rook was odd, but nice.
"So you and Roi du Poison are cousins?" asked Rook.
"Our grandmother remarried after her first husband died and married my grandfather. Vil's father is from her first marriage and mine was from her second," explained Nozomi. "From the limited photos we have, we got our blond hair and purple eyes from her."
"Meanwhile Nozomi inherited her short stature and spiky hair from her grandfather," teased Vil.
"Nii-san!" she pouted.
Rook laughed, as it was very clear the two were close.
"I've set up a meeting with the headmage tomorrow morning. We should have you properly resorted by then once I explain why the mirror seemed to think you have no magic," said Vil.
"Okay!"
"In the meantime, do you mind if I have a little chat with...him?" said Vil. Rook perked up, mostly at the tone.
"Sure, I think Yami is awake and he's been wanting to meet you for a while," said Nozomi.
Rook looked confused, then alarmed as he felt the flare of dark, dark magic coming from the pendant. In the span of seconds, the cute and innocent looking younger sister of his beloved Queen now held the cold, aloof arrogance he had come to expect from royalty. She had the same aura as the Savanaclaw prince, with the same intensity as Leona on the prowl. Oddly enough she had also grown a few inches taller, and her hair spiked upwards.
It was beyond fascinating and more than slightly disturbing.
As if that wasn't bizarre enough, her tone shifted to a slightly deeper, more masculine tone of voice.
It was as if a king had taken possession of the young woman. And from the seamless manner of the switch, it was clear this was not the first time this had happened.
"So. You are the dead king that has been possessing my sister for the past two years," said Vil, less than amused.
The one she called Yami stared him down without hesitation.
"I see she wasn't exaggerating. You do have the aura of a proper King," said Yami calmly. "More than Kaiba at any rate."
Vil made a face at the name of his cousin's so-called rival. He wanted to have words with that fool, for much longer than he had Yami.
Also, he was preening slightly because even a King from before the time of the Seven was acknowledging his royal aura.
Rook was utterly fascinated, but discreetly left during the conversation. Vil had made it clear his sister was not going to spend another night in the Ramshackle dorm if he had any say in the matter. She would need a place to sleep, after all.
Crowley looked at the oddball student, then at the calm expression of the Pomefiore housewarden.
"So this young woman is your sister? Why should I resort her? The mirror does not make mistakes," said Crowley. "I may be generous, but that has limits."
"I believe the mirror was unable to sort her due to external factors."
"What external factors?" asked Professor Trein.
"That pendant around her neck isn't just a gaudy piece of jewelry," explained Vil. "There's a mage's soul trapped inside."
Disbelief filled the features of the adults.
"That's ridiculous," said Professor Crewel.
"Nozomi, show them. It's easier for them to understand why the mirror couldn't sort either of you if they meet him," said Vil.
Nozomi nodded, and allowed Yami to take control. The effect was immediate and all the teachers were on edge because of how similar it felt to an Overblot.
There was no mistaking this was not the same girl from five seconds ago.
Her features were sharper, and had a masculine tint to them now. Never mind the aura they gave off.
"This is most unusual," said Crowley.
"I was unaware there were schools for mages until she told me," said Yami. "I had thought the magical arts had died off."
Trein observed the teen with some distant interest.
"You believe this...other soul...is the reason the mirror was unable to sort your sister?"
"The mirror is a powerful artifact, but her pendant is over five thousand years old. It's highly unlikely it has ever encountered a possession like this before," explained Vil. "Especially since she only solved it two years ago. It also doesn't help that while they have managed to find a balance, it's highly unlikely they would be sorted into the same dorm, which made things worse."
"How sure are we that they can even use magic?" said Crewel.
Without a word, Vil handed Yami his spellpen. The decently sized fireball shut the professors up on the matter.
Vil would not stop preening when Nozomi was immediately sorted into Pomefiore, while her spectral other half was sorted into Diasomnia.
Due to her being the main body, Nozomi would remain in Pomefiore...however Crowley gave her permission to stay in Ramshackle should she need it. It wasn't like anyone was actually using it and if she wanted to fix it up that was on her.
"Hold still, Yuu-chan," said Vil exasperated.
"But it tickles," said Nozomi. "I still can't believe people use that ridiculous nickname."
"It's grandfather's fault," said Vil without remorse. "You never would have gotten stuck with that nickname if he hadn't made that comment about how he would have named you Yugi if you had been born a boy."
He put a bit more product on her unruly hair, and continued to work on it. He had always been exasperated about how spiky her hair was, and he wasn't going to waste a chance to fix it up properly.
Nozomi had a solid base in how to apply make-up (under his careful instruction of course), but she never had the time or energy to mess with her hair. The amount of effort it would take to smooth it out took hours alone.
"Now hush you," teased Vil. "I finally have a chance to fix this hair of yours and I'm going to use it."
Her bangs were much softer now, and were laying flat with soft curves where the spikes once were. He was working on the rest of her hair now. Once he was done with that, he would apply the make-up so she could make a proper introduction as a member of his dorm.
Fortunately, his sister was about the same size as his little protege Epel. It made it easier to alter one of the uniforms to be a bit more feminine...even if her personal outfits had a more gothic lolita feel to them.
"There. If you need any help changing into the uniform, let me know."
"Okay, nii-san," said Nozomi.
When Nozomi came out, Vil observed her with a critical eye. He made some minor adjustments to the way the fabric lay on her, before nodding in satisfaction. Then he frowned at the duel deck at her waist.
"We'll have to find something a bit more fashionable if you insist on carrying that deck everywhere. That thing is old and worn, and your Puzzle barely suits the uniform," he said.
"I know, but it was the only one I could afford with my allowance," said Nozomi.
"Let's adjust your make up, and then we can introduce you to the others properly."
"What about Grim?" asked Nozomi.
"I left Rook in charge of him," said Vil. "Fortunately we have some leftover cloth to make a new collar for him, since he is your familiar after all."
When she looked in the mirror, she barely recognized herself. She definitely didn't look like the somewhat quiet, introverted gamer that had left Domino.
The other members of the dorm were waiting in the common room, eager to meet their new house member.
Vil entered first, before he introduced them to her and Grim.
"This is my younger sister, Nozomi Muto, and her familiar Grim. The mirror was unable to sort her during the ceremony due to the confusion her familiar's entrance caused."
Epel was the first to speak, and he raised a hand.
"Yes?" said Vil.
"Are you the same girl who recently took the title of 'king of games' from that tournament a few months back?" he asked.
Nozomi stared at him, in surprise. Duel Monsters wasn't nearly as popular here as it was back home.
"You watched the Duelist Kingdom tournament?"
Epel nodded.
"Your duel with Pegasus was really cool, though a bit confusing," said Epel enthusiastically.
"He had a mind reading spell that he used with impunity," said Nozomi exasperated. "If you have a duel deck, I'd be happy to duel you!"
