The nighttime cold, crisp air was a welcome breather for a duo of police officers who had just walked out of the Police Department that served the glistening anthropomorphic city of Zootopia. These two officers were a little full-grown rabbit, and a red fox. The rabbit's name; Judy Hopps. And her partner's name was Nicolas Piberius Wilde—of who was known as Nick to all those who knew him, or knew of him. The fox, and the rabbit had first met each other a couple of years back when the Nighthowler/Bellewether case had been a thing…
A/N: I ain't about to go describing the whole entire thing that took place in the movie, so, if you haven't watched it yet, please do before you go reading this. And by the way… this story will take place two years after the events of the movie.
Wilde had been a con artist when they first encountered each other. Hopps had come to Zootopia in the hopes and dreams of becoming a cop. And after going through the Zootopia Police Academy, she had eventually become one... with parking ticket duty, at first. Then, after meeting Wilde, and having an interest in the case that was going on in the meantime, the ZPD Police Chief, Bogo had given her two days to solve the case. Pretty much, after all that, the rest was pretty much history. And that had led to her finally being recognized by Bogo. And with Wilde as her partner. Whereas he was a con artist back then, he now enjoyed his new job as a cop. He too had gone through the ZPD Police Academy and had succeeded. All that had eventually led to this very moment. The two of them had finally checked out after a extremely long day at work. And considering that they were no longer Patrol officers—for Hopps and Wilde had recently been promoted to detectives, their first day on the line of duty as such was extremely exhausting.
First, they kept getting reports that robberies kept happening, then, when they finally had some leads, those leads turned out to be false. Then the second thing was that eventually, the two ZPD detectives, and their new teammates of the ZPD Intelligence Unit, had finally learned that the robberies were nothing but false tips. They also had found and arrested the culprit who kept saying that the 'robberies' were taking place. The person had obviously been drunk when they arrested him. And now that that was finally over, the two found themselves headed back to their respective homes. Nick had offered to walk with Judy back to her place, and she gladly accepted it. As they were both headed back, the two of them were currently talking about today's earlier events.
"Sheesh, that was guy was obviously in a stupor." Hopps laughed.
Her partner only snickered. "You think?"
The rabbit then placed a paw to her face. "It was in the air."
Hopps placed her paw in the pocket of her denim vest.
"Don't forget about tomorrow's meeting with the Chief, and Lieutenant Coyle."
Wilde took a breath before answering back.
"Oh, yeah. Wonder what it's about."
"Probably something to do with getting our new badges. Could be a million things."
Judy looked to her left and peeked into the window of a convenience store. She saw right away that whoever ran the whole place was just getting ready to close down for the night. She then tapped Wilde on the arm.
"You know what? I think I'm a little hungry for a snack. How about you Nick?"
The vulpine only nodded his head.
"I think I'll join you. Haven't had anything since we arrested the guy earlier."
As they neared the store, the mammal inside the shop happened to take notice of them and only waved to them. As the pair walked in, the mammal behind the counter said hello to them. Hopps went towards the snack aisle, whereas Wilde had already gotten what he wanted and went to the checkout counter. The mammal behind it—an impala—took the items and scanned them.
"I take it you like the blueberry snack bread?"
"Oh yes. They're good. Then again, I love all things blueberry." Nick told her.
"Your total is a dollar seventy-eight."
Nick then grabbed out his debit card and was about to place it into the chip reader when the impala saw his ID, and recognized right away that he was a cop.
"Oh no, sir. You don't need to pay for it." She told him.
Nick stopped halfway. "Ma'am, I don't understand."
"You're a cop, I take it? There's no need to pay for it. Let's just say; its my way of paying homage to those who have taken it upon themselves to keep this city safe and sound. And let me guess? The bunny; she's your partner?"
"Yes." Nick replied as he nodded his head.
The impala then smiled.
"You two then don't worry about this at all. It's on me. And, again; thank you for all you do to help keep Zootopia safe. Thank you. I appreciate it so much."
Judy then walked behind Nick and waved to the cashier as both bunny and fox walked out of the store and headed off into the night, back towards their respective homes…
By the time that Judy made it to her apartment, she weakly yawned. Once she heard the door to her apartment space unlock, the bunny opened the door and walked in. This place had just a little bit more room then the first place she had gotten when she first came to Zootopia two years ago. At least, this place had a private bedroom, unlike the last one. And not to mention, her neighbors weren't loud like the last few that she had two days prior. In fact, her next door neighbor was a retired cop who understood the fact that active cops, like her, and Nick, needed sleep, especially at night. And her other neighbor was a city official. By the time it reached 12:30, Judy had had the kitchen and living room lights turned off, and went off to her bedroom, wondering what tomorrow would bring.
