Not many were privy to the truth behind the Weasley twins and their success and fame within the halls of Hogwarts. Much of it can be credited to their infectious laughter, sense of humor, and perfectly timed pranks. They were, by far, the most well-known students throughout all the houses.
What most failed to realize, including the twins, was that there was a silent contributor to their mayhem. Dinah Chessur was invisible to most of her classmates, or so she liked to think. She arrived at Hogwarts on the same train as the Weasley twins, entered the Great Hall with the Weasley twins, and shared almost every class with the Weasely twins. If you asked them who she was, they couldn't tell you.
Her story was a mystery even to her. She was magical, she knew that. She had a flare for the strange, and a love for very muggle things. Her letter of acceptance was delivered by a single-legged Flamingo named Cornwall. Her older sister Alice was quite pleased that she would be relieved of the duties of caring for Dinah. After all, she had a penchant for mischief and mayhem and Alice believed a formal education in magic is precisely what the young girl needed to curb her wild ways.
Dinah's first trip to Diagon Alley was full of mystery and wonder for the young girl. At the wand shop, Mr. Ollivander well and truly gave up on trying to fit a wand for the young lady. He threw a well-loved paint-splattered brush at the girl in exasperation and muttered, "This is probably the best fit I can offer such an exasperating young lady." Much to Dinah's delight, Alice's wonder, and Mr. Ollivander's chagrin, the girl commanded the most elegant use of the paintbrush to conjure up a small daisy that was humming a sweet tune.
Dinah's first experience at Honeydukes was pure delight. It was also there that she first spied the family of red-heads milling about shelves of candies and wonderments. Dinah's sharp blue eyes saw two identical flame-haired boys and her curiosity was piqued. She carefully spied on them and listened in.
"Georgie, remember that map Bill told us about?"
"The one that tells you where everyone is in the castle?"
"Yes! We need that map if we wish to succeed in our pranking endeavors."
Dinah's excitement could hardly be contained. She found an intriguing pair of schoolmates who could become her greatest allies. She made a quick wave of her odd little wand and the two boys were showered in playing cards. As Dinah skipped out of Honeydukes she saw her sister reading a book in the cafe. "Alice, the candy store held the most fascinating thing I have ever seen!" Alice folded her book in her lap, "Most fascinating today or in all of history." Dinah smiled a toothy grin, "It's not in history yet, but it will be for sure. I saw a set of identical twins." Alice just smiled and shook her head, "Congratulations are in order my dearest Dinah, you have found your own tweedles to torment."
The young girl always loved the stories her sister told from a time before she existed in Alice's life. Dinah was especially fascinated by the stories told about a pair of dim-witted twins that were identically the same in appearance and coordination. The idea that one person could be split identically in two was truly fascinating. She wanted nothing more than to meet a pair herself.
Soon enough Dinah found herself standing on the platform on platform 9 ¾ looking around at the number of students and families. So many curiosities caught her attention. That was when she saw the family of red-haired boys. Dinah tapped Alice frantically, "Look, over there by the platform entrance!" Alice smiled toward her sister, "Your tweedles look delightful and not nearly as dim as mine were."
"Isn't their hair the most amazing color Allie?" Alice smiled warmly at her younger sister, it was clear that the girl had become quite taken with the redheads and she wondered what that would bring about in the future. Alice herself had eyed the tallest and oldest looking of the boys, his hair long, his features defined and narrow. His pale skin and the smattering of freckles intrigued her.
The sisters parted ways with a lingering hug and a tear or two on each of their cheeks. As Dinah boarded the train she walked curiously down the narrow halls; watching, listening, and discovering. She had left her things in a random, and empty at the time, compartment. For the remainder of the train ride, she sat just outside of each and every compartment door, listening in to the snippets of conversation she could hear.
Sure she had received a lot of strange looks, who wouldn't question a small girl with brilliant blue eyes, purple pigtails, and a brilliantly striped romper crawling around barefoot outside of each compartment door? Those who dared ask her what she was doing, Dinah would simply grin her impossibly wide grin and hold her finger to her lips. No one bothered to ask any further questions.
If there was something Dinah loved about magical beings, is that her odd behavior was never truly questioned. It was the natural acceptance that strange behavior was a part of the mystery and mystique of being a wizard or a witch. Dinah however, like to stretch those boundaries every now and again.
She came upon a compartment that delighter her senses, she smelled the sweet smells of Honeydukes and listened to the peals of laughter from within the compartment. Without peeking into the compartment she knew her tweedles were sitting comfortably behind the door. She listened in to their conversation, as they sat with a boy named Lee. They talked about Quidditch and Dinah found that rather boring. She peeked her head just enough to see inside the compartment. There on the seat between the two identical boys was a brown lunch sack, their hand occasionally reaching in and pulling out a bite or two of something.
Dinah concentrated on the bag willing its contents to turn into spicy peppers, and as much as she would have loved to see the outcome, she'd rather not be caught. She scrawled a small message on a playing card in her pocket, "They who controls the spice controls the universe." Dinah signed it with the drawing of a toothy grin and slipped the card under the door. She wanted so badly to see the fruits of her efforts but she was wise not to stick around.
The sorting ceremony placed her in Gryffindor. The sorting hat, when placed on her head, immediately gave up its assessment and stated simply, "You're far too wilful to be told what to do. Pick yer house." Looking over the masses you spotted red hair at the Gryffindor table, you grinned widely, "I choose Gryffindor." the kids murmured to their neighbors at the unusual process. The hat simply stated, "What she said". You looked to Professor McGonagall whose face was a mixture of bewilderment and shock, you skipped away trying to stifle a giggle.
It wasn't long after their arrival at Hogwarts that Dinah found herself surrounded by the fire and life that were the Weasleys. She remained one step ahead of her tweedles at all times. She filched the Maurader's Map before they even had formulated the plan to get it. She simply left a playing card that had "the early bird gets the worm boys" scribbled on it. Her signature smile drawn in the bottom corner.
That was how it all started, the game of cat and mouse between the Weasley twins and Dinah Chessur.
