An Inkling's Hope: Never Giving Up

Chapter 1

"Saki!" Agent 3, whose name was Yumi, called out. "Where's my little inkling?"

Giggles reached her and Marina chuckled. "She's good at hiding," she said to her friend.

"True, but I'm a good seeker," Yumi replied.

"Good thing, because Saki is hard to find sometimes," Agent 8 said.

Agent 4 chuckled as he saw his niece peeking out from behind a plant in the hallway before running off and giggling. "Down that hallway," he said, pointing it out to his friends.

Yumi moved quickly, but Saki had hidden again. "She's got that stealth down pat," the mother commented.

"Guess she took to those stealth lessons quickly, huh, Honey?" Agent 8 asked, sitting next to Agent 4, who smiled at her and kissed her.

Marina smiled. "I can't wait for the wedding," she said. "It's going to be a beautiful one for you two."

"I hope so," Agent 8 said, looking a bit nervous.

"What's the matter, my love?" He asked.

She looked at him. "Just...thinking about the future," she said. "If we have kids, they'll be half Inkling and half Octoling."

"We'll accept your children with open arms, 8," Yumi promised. "They'll be my nieces or nephews."

"And my sons or daughters," Agent 4 said.

"And you know Pearl, Callie, and Marie would consider your children their nieces or nephews," Marina said. "Even Captain Cuttlefish would accept them without prejudice."

"Thank you," Agent 8 said gratefully, but she was still a bit worried.

Agent 4 smiled at his girlfriend. "Sweetheart, stop worrying so much," he said, giving her a sweet kiss. She kissed him back before feeling fingers wiggle into her stomach and she laughed, looking to see Saki had come up to them without the two noticing and the little girl had tickled her aunt, giggling at her aunt's reaction.

"Oh, you think Auntie 8's reaction was funny, huh?" The Octoling asked before trying to catch her niece, but the child giggled and crawled under the couch, surprising everyone. Yumi dove to try and catch her daughter, but the little girl was off like a rocket, giggling again.

"Why, that rascal," Marina said, chuckling.

"Okay, 4, get your behind over here and help me catch Saki," Yumi said, feeling a bit exasperated. "You taught her stealth so now you have to help me catch her."

"Oh, come on. And spoil the fun?" The yellow Inkling asked playfully.

8 got a sneaky idea and reached up, tickling her boyfriend's neck, to which he jumped about a mile out of his skin with a yelp, making her and Marina laugh. "Help our sister, 4, or you won't get a kiss later on," the red Octoling said in mock seriousness.

He smirked at her. "You think you can go long without a kiss from me?" He asked teasingly.

"Yes, I can," she said, smirking back at him. "But you can't go very long without a kiss from me, can you, honey?"

Marina burst into giggles as 4's face turned a bit red in embarrassment and Yumi chuckled. "That explains why the Captain was saying he should build a honeymoon room for you two," she said teasingly.

4 looked at her in surprise and Marina decided to play along. "Oh, yes," she said. "It would have a wonderful view of the sunset."

8, seeing what her friends who were practically her sisters doing, giggled. "Oh, that would be so wonderful," she said, looking at her boyfriend with loving eyes. "Maybe you can take me there sometime, hmm?"

The yellow Inkling's face was as red as his girlfriend's tentacle-like hair before Yumi poked his sides, making him jump. "Hey, lover boy. Help me find your niece first. Then you can kiss your lady breathless," she said teasingly.

4 quickly looked around and he paused before smiling and motioning to Yumi. "She's in one of the rooms," he said softly. "Walk by, but don't glance inside. I'll draw Saki out."

Nodding, Yumi walked down the hallway, hearing her daughter giggle and she smiled, but didn't look into any of the rooms. Agent 4 followed and went into the room where both he and the mother heard the little girl's giggles. "Hmm, where could my niece be?" The yellow Inkling mused playfully. "Is she in disguise? Maybe she has the power of invisibility?"

Saki giggled at her uncle's playful words and he heard her giggles before loudly stomping towards the bed where the child's giggles came from, seeing Saki scramble out from under the bed and running to the door and out into the hallway.

But she didn't get more than a few steps into the hallway when hands caught her and lifted her up. "Mommy's got you!" Yumi cooed as she turned Saki to face her and the child giggled and squirmed. "Oh, no. You're not escaping me this time, sweetie."

"What made her start the game of hide-and-seek?" Agent 8 asked.

"I was going to give Saki a bath and though she likes baths, she loves to play hide-and-seek, so when she runs and hides, I have to find her."

The others chuckled at that before seeing it was starting to become evening. "Well, we best get going," Marina said.

"Don't forget the picnic tomorrow, Yumi," Agent 4 said.

"I won't. Thank you," Yumi said as she and Saki saw them out before the mother took the child to the bathroom and set the two year old down. "Okay, let's get your bath going."

The child immediately went to a bucket of her bath toys and selected a few boats before going back over to her mother and setting the toys down and going over to a shelf that had the bubble bath and she selected a green bottle, bringing it over to her mother, who smiled.

"Watermelon bubble bath and your boats that Grandpa gave you for your birthday," she said. "Alrighty."

The bath was soon set and Saki was having a great time playing with her toy boats while Yumi watched over her daughter, smiling. "Hard to believe that two years ago, you came into my life," she said.

"Mama!" Saki said happily. "Mama. Happy."

"Yes, sweetie," her mother said. "Mommy is very happy to have you as her daughter."

After the bath, Yumi picked up her daughter and wrapped a towel around her. Saki let out a yawn and rubbed her eyes. "Ah, looks like someone is ready for the Sandman to visit them," the mother said as she helped her daughter into a pair of pajamas and picked her up, sitting in the rocking chair and pushing it gently into motion.

The toddler yawned again and snuggled into her mother's hug. "Mama," she said sleepily.

Yumi began humming gently and Saki rested her head against her mother's left shoulder, her right ear resting right over her mother's heartbeat, falling sound asleep. Her mother smiled and stood up, placing the little girl into her crib.

"Mommy loves you, sweetie," she said softly as she placed a blanket over her daughter and turned on the nightlight, watching her baby peacefully sleep for a bit before going to bed herself, falling asleep instantly.

Saki's going to have more bonding moments with her family. :)
