Prologue: Beginnings

Young Will was one excited 6 year old Wizard, his mother had enrolled him in a school for kids his age. The fact that this was a muggle school didn't bother him in the slightest. He hardly slept the night prior due to his excitement, the only thing he didn't like was his little sister couldn't go with him.

The toddler in question was little 2 year old Serena. The little girl had captured her new mother's heart when she saw the little tyke have a bout of accidental magic after her parents passed away. The orphanage didn't know what to make of the little girl and was glad to see her off to a loving family. Since she was adopted by Eleanor, Serena always had to be close to either her new Mother or Brother.

Will had to give his little sister a great big hug before she would let his arm go, her normally green eyes as red as her hair, "Hey, I'll be back after a while, baby sis."

The tyke held onto him tighter, "No Go!"

Eleanor knelt down next to the pair and kissed both on the forehead, "Serena honey, he needs to get to class. We will see him later, I promise you."

Serena looked at her new mum, "Promise?"

Eleanor made an X motion over her heart, "Cross my heart, now come here you."

She scooped up the toddler and started walking away, Will waving as they do. He turned around and walked through the doors of the Crawley Primary School to start the next phase of his young life, his long blond hair streaming behind him as he goes.

He had been assigned to a classroom close to the entrance of the school, and when he entered the room the teacher introduces him to the class. After the abridged hello he found the only empty seat next to a girl that had a bushy mane of hair on top of her head.

He held his hand out in friendship to the girl, who looked a little lonely, "I'm Will Everett."

She turned to face him, her chocolate brown eyes studying him for a moment before she grasps his hand and shakes it, "Hermione Granger, pleasure. You like to read?"

Will's silver eyes lit up, "I love to read, mainly fantasy like the Narnia books."

Her lips curved into a smile, "I think we'll get along fine then."

The teacher called everyone's attention to begin her lesson for first period.

It was during the 15 minute break that Will and Hermione had their first test as new friends, several older boys approached and started heckling her for either her hair, her front teeth, or her brains.

Will wouldn't let this pass however, "Stop it. She is my friend!"

The largest boy got into Will's face, "What are you gonna do about it blondie? Your hair being that long makes you look like a girl yourself, Fairy!"

To Hermione, this was a new experience. No one had ever stood up for her that wasn't her mum or dad. She decided there and then to be Will's friend. "Eugene, that is more than enough of that. Mr. Harrison made it clear that you are to leave me alone. Will is my friend, so leave him be!"

Will felt it, there was a magical wave that passed over him and made the boys stagger as if struck. He looked back toward Hermione who was tearing up while mumbling to herself "I did it again….." before backing away from Will, looking like she may run away.

As the boys run off he reached out and grabbed her hand and asked, "Again? You've done this before?" She nods slowly with unshed tears in her eyes. He chuckles, "We might have more in common than you think Miss Granger. I'd like to introduce you to my mother after school."

"Your Mother? Why?"

"She can tell more than I can if you are what she is." Will gripped her hand tighter as the bell run again, "Trust me, it is nothing bad."

The relief on her face brought a smile to the boy's face as they walked hand in hand back to class.

Will walked out of the school with Hermione as they looked for their respective parents, for Will that was easy as the 2 year old with red hair screamed "WILL!" when she saw him.

As the toddler ran toward him like a heat seeking missile, Hermione waved her own family over. Her mum looked like an older version of what Hermione may grow up to look like, while her father had a tall and stocky build, while having the same eyes Hermione has.

With Serena firmly holding Will's hand, he speaks to his mother, "Mum, I think Hermione here is like us."

Eleanor looks shocked but asks, "What happened?"

"Some mean boys were picking on us and she sent them back without touching them."

Hermione's mother knelt down to her daughter's level and asked, "Again?"

She nods. "Will wasn't scared off like others were."

Eleanor askes Hermione's mother, "Does this happen often with Hermione?"

Her father answers, "Yes, though it only happens when she is upset usually. Do you know why? Your boy said she may be like you, what does he mean by that?"

"That's quite the tale, perhaps it would be best to go someplace and let other parents gather their children first." She scoops up Serena, "I am Eleanor Everett. My boy here is William or Will. And this little handful is Serena."

"I'm Daniel Granger, my wife is Emma, and you've met Hermione," he motions to each in turn. "There is a little diner not far from here that serves decent Tea, shall we retire there for our discussion?"

"Sounds lovely."

*TFR*

When they reach the diner they all sit down with Eleanor casting so privacy charms after tea is brought to them, "Let me guess, since Hermione here has done this kind of thing before you have taken her to various clinics to see if there is something wrong with her?" At the nods of affirmation she continues, "Well I think you don't have anything to worry about, if I am right she is a witch."

At their stunned looks, Will pulls out an ornate stick from a holster that wasn't there a moment before and hands it to Hermione, "Flick this upward like you are turning on a light switch and say Lumos."

She looks at her parents who nod toward her, emboldened by this she follows Will's instructions and says, "Lumos."

The light at the tip of the wand that emits is not very bright but Eleanor smiles at it nonetheless, "Will was right, you do have magic dear."

"What does this mean for our little girl?" Dan asks.

"It means she will receive a letter of acceptance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry like my son and daughter when she reaches the age of 11. The school will help her hone her magic like nowhere else can. Seeing as she and my Will have already become friends, I'd like to offer the start of her education in magic."

"This school sounds like something out of a comic book," Dan retorts.

Emma looks to Eleanor with a perplexed look, "Why isn't magic more widely known?"

Will answered this one, "The witch trials through history. We need to hide from those that would hurt us."

Dan nods, "That is a good enough reason I guess."

"Normally, your family wouldn't be notified until she received her letter, but seeing as we discovered you we are bending that rule a bit. Will here is a very good judge of character, so I get the feeling we can trust you not to spread this around? The law known as the International Statuette of Secrecy is the most profound law that must be upheld here," Eleanor continues. "The penalties of breaking said law are quite severe."

In the meantime, Will coaches Hermione on the Nox half of the light spell and takes the wand back. The wand and holster disappearing as soon as he lets go of the wand.

"When can I get one?" she asks him.

"11, that's when you are legally allowed to have one."

She cocks her head to the side in confusion, "Then why do you have one already?"

He looks a bit saddened by the question but answers anyway, "It belonged to my father, he was… killed by terrorists when I was a year old. Mom lets me keep his wand so at least something of his is always with me."

Hermione's eyes shoot open as she crushes him in a sideways hug, "I'm so sorry, I didn't know."

"It's okay, I have mom and my new little sister."

Hermione lays her head on his shoulder as Eleanor extends an offer, "Well I can see our families becoming close, would you care to join us for supper tonight? Get a real feel for the world your daughter is getting ready to step into?"

Dan and Emma lock eyes for a moment, seemingly having a conversation with just a glance, then turn to her and answer, "We would love to."

*TFR*

Will welcomes Hermione into their manor house thanks to elfin apparition followed very closely by Dan and Emma.

Eleanor greets her guests, "Welcome Dan, Emma, Hermione. Thank you Doogy, rest up for as long as you need then could we have some refreshments for us adults? Will honey why don't you show Hermione around until Doogy is ready to serve supper?"

The elf pops away as Will bows respectfully to their guests, "Ms. Granger would you allow me to escort you around the property?"

Hermione giggles at her friend's change in behavior, "Please do, kind sir." And the kids all run off toward the back.

"What can we expect in the magical half of Britain to be different than the non magical side?" Dan asks his hostess as the three of them enter the parlor.

She smirks as she quips, "Got a month or 2? There are so many nuances that your daughter is going to have to learn and navigate just to fit in. My husband was like her, a magical born to a non magical family. First off you need to know that this society, Magical Britain, is deeply old fashioned. At least compared to the Mundane world that is. Think back in the Victorian Era at least. Add on to that the fact that there is a pecking order of sorts that is also based on 'Blood Status'. Purebloods like me can trace their magical lineage back at least 4 generations. Any muggle, or nonmagical, blood in that time frame means you are classed as 'Half-blood', like Will is. Next is people who are magical themselves, but come from nonmagical people, or Muggles. These are called Muggle-born. The last blood status is just the opposite, a Nonmagical born into a magical family, this is called a Squib."

Emma looks confused, "What does this have to do with Hermione? Would she be classed as one of the lower class just because of her birth? That's stupid!"

Eleanor nods her head, "I agree wholly, I am using my father's spot of the Wizinegomot to try and bring more equality but it is an uphill battle, a lot of other members are 'Old Money' and like things the way they are. When Will turns 11 he can claim his own spot on the council as his family is old enough to do so. This would allow me to be a proxy to 2 seats on the council."

"What is this Wizinegawhatever?" Dan asks.

"The Wizinegomot is a governing council that makes laws, passes judgment, and other governing faculties. The closest thing to compare it to in the mundane would be the House of Lords and High Courts rolled into one. My father never got the chance to disinherit me for my choice of husband, so when he died I could claim his spot on that council by proxy until my son is of age. At 11 I will have the weight of 2 seats behind me. So hopefully I can make more of a difference that way."

Emma's head was swimming but one question kept coming into her brain, "If you and Will can have spots on this Wizinegomot, why sent him to mundane school?"

A wan smile spread on Eleanor's face, "I promised his father, my Eliwood that he would have a mixed education growing up, and I like the idea of someone bridging the gap between the 2 separate worlds."

Dan and Emma nod at this, clearly thinking this was a good idea as well.

Will lead Hermione out the back door and out onto the grounds. She looks back toward the house to see a modest 2 story home that she swears felt bigger inside than it looks. There are trees lining the boarder of the field they are in, presumably to give privacy. Will grabs her hand and starts walking with her to what must be a barn of some form.

"I want to introduce you to someone very special to me Hermione."

"In a barn?"

"Yeah. She is pretty special."

He opens the door and leads her inside only for her to see several horse like creatures, but they were different from horses in the fact that they had the head, forelegs, and wings of eagles.

"What are they?" she asks.

"Hippogriffs, wait here a moment," he leaves her by the open door for a moment. He returns with a hippogriff that was golden yellow in color, "Goldie I want you to meet my friend Hermione."

Hermione studies the creature for a moment and then bows before the creature following Will's example just a moment prior. When Goldie bows back Will steps over and guides her to the side of the magnificent beast.

"She's beautiful…. And so soft," she said, as she stroked Goldie's neck plumes.

"She is my familiar. Mum raises various magical creatures and plants for her job at St. Mungos. Goldie protected me from the rain when I fell and broke my ankle last year. Her wing gave me shelter until mum found me."

Hermione's eyes shone with tears at the beauty of what these two clearly share. She is broken out of her moment of joy by Goldie bonking her on her head with her beak gently.

Will laughs, "I think she likes you."

Hermione' smile returns full force at that.

*TFR*

As the children are spending time with Goldie, Serena is waking from her nap, so Eleanor holds the tyke as she continues to answer questions about the muggle world.

"What is it you do besides this Wizinegomot? There has to me more for you than just that right?" Dan asks.

"You mean besides my kids?" She raises an eyebrow then lets out a chuckle, "I am a Potioneer for St. Mungos."

"Someone who brews potions for a living? Like a Pharmacist?" Eleanor nods, " And this St. Mungos sounds like a hospital of some form right?" another nod, "So medical and political?"

"Yes, it can be tiring with 2 kids on top of that, there are occasional social gatherings to attend as well. Baring emergency it is considered extremely rude to refuse an invitation to such events. My garden of Flowers is my Zen place, just for me."

Emma perks up at that last bit, "I love my garden at home myself, Hermione is usually so quiet I don't have to worry about her when I am out there, she usually has her nose in a book off on some adventure."

As both women smile at a shared hobby, Dan looks out the window toward where the kids are, "What is that with the kids out there?"

Eleanor looks out the window and chuckles, "Will adores that hippogriff, I'm not surprised he introduced his friend to her." Doogy pops in and begins to set the table, much to the amazement of the duo with her. "Emma, Dan, Welcome to the wacky and sometimes disturbing Wizarding World."
