Chapter Three (Stefan's POV):

Stefan careened into the parked car, causing the alarm to go off.

Argh, the pain was too much for him to bear, he wanted it to stop!

"Hey, get away from my car!"

Stefan's ears pricked up at the sound, and the smell of enticing fresh blood wafted through his nose.

Stefan would do anything to make this pain go away. If that meant draining innocent victims of their delicious blood, so be it.

He leant against the car door, breathing heavily.

"I thought I told you to stay away from my car, buddy."

Stefan felt the skin around his eyes darken. He wouldn't be able to hold the need in for much longer.

He didn't want to do this. He wasn't a killer! He was the nice Salvatore brother, the only vampire in existence who ate bunnies for a living.

"I said get away from my car!"

A hand grabbed Stefan's shoulder and shoved him round.

The man's eyes widened and there was a scream as Stefan's fangs elongated and he plunged in.

(Damon's POV):

"Elena, where the hell is my brother?"

"I don't know, Damon! He went mad, kept saying I was Katherine and tried to kill me!"

"So you just locked yourself in this room, with a stake handy? He's supposed to be the love of your life! He could be dead for all we know!"

"I'm sorry Damon, I - "

"I don't want to hear it. I'll go find him, you...do something useful."

"Like what?"

"I don't know, do I have to think of everything?"

He saw Elena's hurt expression but it didn't register in his mind.

A hand on his arm stopped him from taking off.

"Damon, wait! Did you find the cure?"

Damon knew his expression said it all.

"No! That can't be right! With every attack there has to be a counter-attack..."

"Well that's not what Jules said. And she should know, it's her venom in his veins." Damon's voice began to rise. He was conscious of this, but couldn't lower it, and he had no idea how to stop his mouth from saying things best left unsaid. "I can't believe I let this happen! I was so stupid, she was after me, I - I - "

Elena slapped him across the face. Damon's eyes widened from the shock. Why the hell was she slapping him?

"Damon, focus! Now is not the time to be telling me this. And we both know you should be talking to someone else about this. Find Stefan, I'll find Bonnie. She'll have the answer."

He should have been furious, but he had more important matters to worry about, like whether his deranged brother was still alive.

He bloody well has to be, or there will be hell to pay.

(Stefan's POV):

Stefan savoured the taste of something he had long since told himself he'd given up, but hadn't managed to.

Although he drank Elena's blood everyday, a few drops really weren't enough to satisfy his thirst, he was surprised Elena had thought they were.

Humans were something else entirely.

"Stefan, no!"

The familiar voice made him pause, while a hard force slammed into him and he was wrenched from his meal and shoved onto the pavement.

The pain in his shoulder flared up again and he cried out in agony.

"Sorry, sorry! Stop fighting Stefan, then it will stop hurting, I promise."

His brother had hold of his shirt and was keeping him firmly on the ground.

"I can't Damon, I can't - can't bear it anymore."

Then he remembered the man he'd been feeding from.

"Oh my god Damon, quick you need to save the human, give him your blood!"

He saw Damon glance to his right, and shake his head. "He's gone, Stefan."

Stefan looked too. "No he isn't, he's right there."

The body of the human was lying discarded in the middle of the car park.

"No Stefan...he's gone."

Realisation smacked Stefan across the face. He clutched Damon tighter. "No...I didn't want to - I didn't mean to - "

"I know Stefan, believe me, I know."

Tears slid down Stefan's face as he shook from the pain and fear.

"I want to go home, Damon. Please take me home?"

"Of course, brother."

Stefan felt Damon lift him easily, and they took off.

The pain almost took away any rational thought, but Stefan knew, deep down, that he wanted to be surrounded by the only member of family he had left, when the end came.
