victoria: Thank you thank you thank you! :)

Dev08: Thank you for your review :) There are a couple of times where Damon does use the word 'bro', but mainly it's 'brother', I know. I tend to use either word, when it fits :)

Enjoy!

Chapter Six (Damon's POV):

"DAMON, NO!"

Damon's concentration went out the window, and the stake went awry, slipping out of his hand.

He hissed "Elena, you are ruining everything!"

Stefan was beginning to stir, his dream fracturing at Damon's lack of concentration.

Elena took a step into the room. "But you don't understand! Bonnie knows about a cure!"

Damon stiffened and hurriedly tried wiping the tears from view. "What?"

Elena came rushing forward, knowing she had his full attention. "Yes! She spoke to her witch ancestors and they told her about someone who can save him!"

"Who?"

"Err...well...you're not going to like this..."

"Who is it Elena?!"

"Klaus."

Damon froze, then groaned.

"You have got to be kidding me."

(Stefan's POV):

What was happening?

One minute he was in the dream, saved from the pain and having finally heard Damon tell him he loved him, the next he was slipping back into reality filled with pain again.

He groaned and tried to move, but his brother's voice stopped him.

"Hey, stay calm Stefan, it's okay. Go back to sleep."

Stefan nodded drowsily, feeling Damon slip off the bed.

He was about to drift off, despite the pain, when he heard Elena and Damon whispering urgently.

Raising his head a little, he strained to hear what they were saying.

"That is not possible - How is he the only guy who can cure Stefan?"

"I don't know Damon, that's what the spirits told Bonnie."

Stefan was intrigued. Who was the only guy who could cure him?

Damon spoke up again. "What about Elijah? He's an Original too! And he spared your life, as well as mine."

"Well, it turns out that Klaus is actually a hybrid, so only he can do it."

Klaus? No. They couldn't be serious.

"I've gotta talk to Bonnie about this, but it looks like we'll have to contact Elijah again."

They were serious. Stefan had to have his input.

With a supreme effort, Stefan opened his eyes and sat up.

Both Damon and Elena turned round. "Stefan, what are you doing?! Stay down!"

"I can't let you go through with it, Damon. Have you forgotten that Elijah and especially Klaus want Elena for some kind of ritual? We're supposed to be protecting her, not letting it be easy for them to grab her, especially with me as weak as this!"

Stefan fell back among the covers, exhausted. That was the first - and last time - he'd be able to put up an argument as good as that while he was wounded.

Instantly, Damon hurried to his side and leant down to his level.

"Hey, hey, don't tire yourself out, okay? Don't worry about anything, let your big brother deal with this."

"But - "

"No buts."

"Elena - "

"Will be fine."

"Damon - "

"Is my name."

Stefan could only halfheartedly glare at his brother and regrettably concede defeat as he could feel his energy draining with every word.

Damon patted his shoulder and smiled at him. "It'll be okay, I prom - I'm sure of it."

Stefan appreciated Damon's avoidance of the word 'promise'. Actually, he was surprised that his brother even bothered to remember - But wait, this was a different Damon, one that told him he loved him.

Because his back was to Elena, Damon didn't notice the look she was giving the both of them, but Stefan did.

It was like she'd never seen Damon be friendly towards him in an argument before.

Or this friendly towards him...ever.

How could she? They'd started off enemies in her lifetime.

But in the past half hour, things had changed.

His brother had said he loved him, and Stefan was never going to forget it.

(Damon's POV):

He didn't want to leave having Stefan think there was tension between them, so he smiled, and thought nothing of it.

Until Elena looked knowingly at him with a glint in her eyes.

But all she said was "Bonnie texted me - she's here. Shall we talk to her downstairs?"

Damon nodded and was about to follow her out the room, when he turned back round to his brother.

"I'll be sure to keep you updated, so don't go anywhere."

"Oh sorry, I was thinking of going to the Grill and draining the bar staff dry. Care to join me?"

Damon grinned, glad Stefan was able to still be sarcastic, even in his state. "When you're better brother, I'll keep you to your word."

Going downstairs, he greeted Bonnie and asked her when they could start contacting Elijah.

"Hopefully when I send a jab of power at him, wherever he is, he'll be able to find out where it came from, and meet us here."

"So...have you done it yet?"

"Not yet."

"Well what are you waiting for?! We haven't got all day!"

"Damon! Give her some space!"

"I'm sorry you don't seem to care much about your boyfriend Elena, but I do."

He sat down heavily on the sofa and put his head in his hands.

"Hey hey, Damon, it'll be fine, Stefan will be fine!"

Lifting his head slightly he saw Elena glance at Bonnie who was focussed in the spell, and turn back to him.

She whispered "What is it, what's wrong?"

Damon shook his head, finding it amusing that she thought she could help.

"Is it because of what I saw upstairs?"

Damon's eyes shot up and stared intensely at her.

"What did you see Elena?"

"Well...um...you know."

"No, tell me."

"Err, well, you were..."

"I was what?" He knew he was making it hard for her but he didn't care. He didn't want to say it, to hear it...

"You were going to stake him!"

Damon shut his eyes and nodded. He clenched his hands into fists to stop them trembling.

"It wasn't your fault..."

He whispered, not trusting his voice "I was going to kill him...my own brother, Elena."

"Yes, but there was no chance of a cure then..."

Damon's eyes snapped open. "Would you have killed Jeremy? Would you have been able to lift - let's say - a knife, and stab him, knowing he wouldn't ever come back?"

Elena looked take aback. She was struggling for words.

Suddenly the doorbell rang, cutting through the tension.

Damon abruptly stood up, brushing invisible dust off his jeans, and started forward.

Elena would never understand that what Damon hated so much was that it had felt so right to kill Stefan then.

Like the timing was perfect, the scene was perfect, the moment was perfect.

Now the moment was missed, and what if there was no cure, in the end?

How the hell was Damon going to try to end his brother's life again?

He opened the door, froze, then raised his eyebrows.

"Good evening, Damon."

"Wow, you are one fast Original."

Please review :) Glad Stefan isn't dead yet? ;)
