Chapter Seven (Damon's POV):

"So tell me Elijah, why did you let me and the doppelgänger go, when she wanted to give herself over yesterday?"

Elijah smiled briefly, eyes flicking over him to look at Elena. "I do not want Elena to come to any harm before my brother gets here. And I decided the best way for her to stay safe is with the two Salvatore brothers who would do their best to protect her. Speaking of which, where is the other; Stefan?"

Damon sat up straighter. "Ah, well that's the problem, Eli. He's sick."

Elijah frowned. "I don't see how that is possible - he is almost invincible after all, and" his voice took on a steely tone "please refrain from calling me that."

"Sure, whatever, it was only a nickname Eli...jah."

Elena and Bonnie both turned to glare at him and he sobered up.

Elena began to speak. "What Damon is trying to say is that Stefan isn't just normal sick. He was bitten by a werewolf."

Elijah leant back in his chair. "Ah, I see."

Bonnie continued as she saw Elena begin to choke up. "And my ancestors told me that Klaus would be able to cure him..."

"So he could. But, tell me, why would he want to help you?"

Damon smiled sinisterly "Because, what's to stop us from turning Elena into a vampire to foil his ritual, and your way of killing him - if we're to believe you want him dead?"

He refused to look at Elena and Bonnie so as not to see their puzzled expression at this new turn of events, instead focussing completely on Elijah.

Elijah seemed to realise the sincerity of what Damon was saying but could see that Elena suddenly looked quite uncomfortable. "But as far as I know, Elena does not want to become a vampire, otherwise she would have become one ages ago to be with Stefan. So would you really betray her trust like that?"

Damon knew he had to look 100% in control for this to work.

"Ye - "

"No!"

They all turned as one to look at the owner of the voice who had interrupted Damon.

Damon's eyes widened at the state of his brother, who seemed to be deteriorating rapidly. He was clinging to the doorway like his life depended on it.

Before he could say anything, Elijah spoke up.

"Ah Stefan, I see you are able to join us. Do you have any views you would like to express?"

Damon stood up hastily and made his way over to help his brother back up to his room, while talking to Elijah.

"He's not able to take part in this conversation, I'm afraid - "

"Yes I am!"

Damon reached Stefan and, placing his brother's arm over his neck and his own underneath Stefan's other arm, he began to help him back to the staircase.

He called over his shoulder. "I'll be back in a sec!"

"Damon, let me - "

"Shut up, or you will ruin the whole plan!" He hissed.

Stefan shut up until they were safely back in his room. "What's the plan? You can't turn Elena into a vampire! I won't - " He began coughing violently and doubled over.

Damon sighed and once again helped his brother up to his bed.

"This is why you don't get out of bed and rile yourself up over nothing!"

Stefan looked away sheepishly. "I thought..."

"You thought I'd really turn Elena into a vampire if they didn't save your sorry life?"

"Well...yeah."

"Hmm. Well let's hope it doesn't go that far."

Stefan shot back up. "You wouldn't - "

Damon pushed him gently back down. "Relax! Jesus! I'm going to go back and rejoin the conversation, and say things that Elijah needs to hear, to get him to do what I want. All right?"

Stefan nodded. "'l'll be listening to every word!"

"I don't doubt that." Damon smiled fondly as he walked back out the room.

"So where were we?"

Elijah, Bonnie and Elena stood up as Damon strode in.

"Well, I have made a decision. In light of what you are threatening to do, which would ruin the plans of both mine and Klaus, I will go and discuss it with my brother. It might take a few days."

"A few days?! Stefan doesn't have that long!"

"I cannot rush Niklaus. The full moon will not rise for another few days, he may not wish to be known before then. Goodbye."

"But - I - You - "

It was too late, Elijah had already disappeared.

Damon sank down on the sofa and glared at the two girls. "What did you say to him when I was upstairs?"

Bonnie frowned. "Nothing."

"You must have said something!"

Elena took a step closer to him. "He wanted to know how far you would go to cure Stefan. If you would really...turn me into a vampire."

Damon looked at her. "And what did you say?"

"Well, I said despite your fights and misunderstandings, you love each other, but I also said I didn't know how far you would go..."

Damon stood up. "As far as it takes."

He walked away before he could see the flash of uncertainty in her eyes.

Bonnie was upset "But that's not fair!"

Damon shrugged. Elena might never want to be a vampire, yet Stefan never wanted to be bitten.

The world wasn't fair.
