Chapter Nine PART 2 (Damon's POV):
"You killed him!"
"I didn't do anything!" Klaus exclaimed.
"Exactly - You didn't give him the cure! You're a murderer!"
Damon lunged at Klaus , who was still too stunned to react in time, and they fell to the floor.
Damon reached for the stake that was still lying discarded, and with a roar, brought it down towards Klaus' heart, but the Original had recovered in time and held up a restraining arm.
"You deserve to die! You've been alive so much longer than he was."
"So have you." Klaus hissed.
"Yeah, well, I don't have the cure, do I?"
"And if you kill me, then others like yourself also won't get the cure and it'll be your fault - "
"Shut up!"
"In any case, that won't kill me - it won't even harm me. Well, maybe a little."
Damon glared. "I'm sure getting your head ripped off and burnt in a fire will hurt just a bit more."
Klaus frowned, a hint of fear flashing in his eyes, and was about to reply when another voice answered for him.
"I do not think you want to do that."
They both looked at Elijah bending over Stefan. Damon had forgotten he was even there.
"And why not?"
"Because, Damon Salvatore, your brother is still alive."
"What?! Don't try anything funny with me, Eli..."
"Come and see for yourself. His pulse is weak, but it exists."
Damon hesitated for just a second, wondering if it was a trick to help Klaus escape, but bewilderment won over, and he instantly appeared beside his brother's body.
"Here, feel his wrist."
Elijah offered Damon his brother's wrist, and he took it, cradling it almost gently, not wanting to cause Stefan any discomfort, if it were indeed true.
Holding his breath, he pressed his fingers on the area where the pulse could be felt...and sure enough, a weak but persistent beat coursed through his brother's veins.
Stefan was still alive.
Damon's joy broke his normally smooth features and he immediately turned around to find Klaus standing behind him, staring solemnly at Stefan.
"He's still alive then?"
Damon's joy was replaced with a disgruntled expression. "Yeah, just about, no thanks to you. He needs something, though. I can't remember what. Hmm, let me think what it could possibly be..." He posed with a hand to his chin, before snapping his fingers "oh I know, A CURE!"
Klaus stared at Stefan's noticeably breathing form a little longer, before raising his eyes to Damon.
"Will you let him travel with me?"
"Look, can we discuss this after he's better?"
"That's my price."
"I don't believe it..." Damon looked exasperatedly at Elijah.
"Niklaus, his heart will fail soon. Is that what you want?"
"No, I..." Klaus looked from his brother, to Damon, to Stefan, then sighed in resignation and bit his wrist.
Damon's eyes widened, startled. "What are you...?"
"Step aside, Damon."
"Why? Have you got the cure with you?"
"My blood is the cure."
Damon frowned, but moved aside. "Really? Is this some kind of special hybrid magic?"
"The witches thought it would balance my abominable existence."
His voice implying that the topic was closed, Klaus cradled Stefan's head and brought his wrist to the unconscious vampire's mouth.
"Umm...how will Stefan cope with this new type of blood? He definitely can't control himself with human blood - the doses from Elena don't count."
Klaus removed his hand. "A drop will do."
The effect was almost instant.
Stefan's chest began to pale and the wound on his back started to close in on itself.
Damon rushed to his brother's side once again, not wanting to give in to the hope that Stefan, his Stefan, would be all right.
Klaus stood back. "He will need to rest until tomorrow, and gain his strength by drinking lots of blood, human or not."
Damon nodded absent-mindedly, not paying much attention to anything but his brother's steadily beating heart.
Elijah motioned to Klaus for them to leave, but Klaus hesitated until the wound had completely healed, and no trace of swelling remained.
Then, leaning in close, he whispered parting words in Damon's ear.
"I will come to collect."
Damon turned around quickly to argue, but there was no one else in the room.
Right now though, Klaus wasn't the priority in Damon's mind; his little brother was.
