Anybody Can Shine No Matter What They're Made Of
Chapter 2: Dreams Of My Own
A few years later, Rodney has eventually become a young boy, and he is now attending Nickel Elementary School along with April. Also, when he began attending elementary school, he made a best friend of his own just like his older sister did, and she is Cappy McMissle. As time went by just as he got older, he needed replacement parts just like any other robot needed to do so, and April needed some new parts too since she was getting older as well.
One day, a mailbox robot brings two large boxes to the Copperbottom residence and leaves them right in front of the household on the porch, and he rings the doorbell before leaving. Herb suddenly noticed the doorbell rang and he noticed the delivery right in front of the home, and he brought them inside just as he noticed that they're for his son and daughter and brought them to the dining room. Just as Rodney and April began playing some board games with each other, they suddenly notice their father carrying the two boxes that had their new replacement parts to the dining room, much to their amazement just as they went to the dining room as well to see what their new parts are like while Lydia is cooking up some soup for lunch.
"Hey, Rodney and April." Herb greeted.
"Are those my new big boy parts?" asked Rodney.
"And those are my new big girl parts too?" asked April.
"Yeah, they sure are, you two." said Herb just as he put the two boxes on the table.
Rodney looked inside one of the boxes while April looked inside the other box. "Wow!" His expression suddenly became filled with disappointment upon what his own parts really look like. "They're not shiny just like I imagined they would be."
"Well, actually, the parts are not brand new, and they've already been used," said Herb.
"They're hand-me-downs from one of your cousins Jeffrey," said Lydia.
"And they only last for a year," said Herb.
"Alright, then." said Rodney in disappointment. "I thought they were gonna be shiny, but it wasn't what I was expecting anyway."
"Oh, Rodney, don't be upset about the parts our cousin just sent you," said April. "The parts that one of our cousins sent for me are hand-me-downs too, and it doesn't have to be so shiny."
"Huh? It doesn't have to be so shiny?" asked Rodney. April nodded her head. "But how? These hand-me-downs are not that perfect at all."
"Even though it's not perfect, it doesn't have to be perfect, little brother." said April. "Things don't have to be 100 percent perfect, even when it doesn't look that shiny. It's already shiny in its own way and you should understand that kind of thing."
"Your sister is absolutely right about what she just explained to you, Rodney," said Herb. "The hand-me-downs doesn't have to be 100 percent perfect to be shiny 'cause it's already shiny in its own way. We know it wasn't what you expected at all, but you need to understand that it's already perfect in your own way."
"Also, your sister exactly said the same thing when she got hand-me-downs for her new parts when she used to be your age." said Lydia. "She was hoping that they would be perfect enough to be shiny, but she realized that it doesn't have to be that perfect to be shiny 'cause it's already shiny."
Rodney stared at the hand-me-downs in the box for a moment and then he smiled at them. "You know, you're absolutely right. The hand-me-downs are perfect already even though they're not that shiny, and I should appreciate them just the way they are and I've just realized that I like them already even though they weren't what I've been expecting at all."
"That's such a good idea, you should appreciate them the way they are." said Herb. "Now let's go to the annual Metallic Day parade just like we've planned on this morning, you two."
"Alright, Dad, let's go. And it's one of the best holidays ever to celebrate." said Rodney. "Hey, Mom, are you coming to the parade?
"Yes, but I am still making some soup for everybody to have at the parade." said Lydia. "I'll be there soon, and you two can go ahead to the parade with your father."
"Okay, Mom. Let's go to the parade, Dad, and we'll see you there, Mom." said April.
"C'mon, you two." said Herb.
Rodney and April get out the hand-me-downs from the boxes and they quickly put them on. Herb then leaves the Copperbottom residence along with Rodney and April to witness the parade of Metallic Day while Lydia stays behind and prepares the soup for lunchtime at the special event. Soon, the two siblings and their father arrive at the parade for the annual holiday that is located in the midst of Rivet Town, and once they arrive there, they greet Cappy and her parents and Isaac and his parents, much to their delight, and Rodney and April both notice Cappy and Isaac are wearing hand-me-downs as well.
"Hello, guys, and you've arrived to celebrate Metallic Day just like we are and everybody else are." said Herb.
"Mmm-hmm. It looks like we have, and Metallic Day is one our favorite holidays to celebrate ever." said Mrs. McMissile.
"Also, Metallic Day is one of the best holidays ever besides any holiday," said Mr. Brightlight.
"Such as Valentine's Day, Easter, St. Patrick's Day, The Fourth Of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's."
"That's right. Oh, and my wife Lydia is coming to the parade too." said Herb. "Right now, she's making some soup for everybody for lunchtime during the parade, and she's making one of her best soups ever."
"Well, that's a good thing to hear 'cause your wife can make such a really good soup, and her cooking is absolutely the best." said Mr. McMissile.
"Lydia is such a wonderful cook, Herb, and she can make really delicious food," said Mrs. Brightlight. "We can't wait to eat her soup when she gets here to the parade."
"I can't wait too, and you're right, she is such a great cook and she always has been." said Herb. "She would always make her tasty cooking for any kind of event just like this one."
"Hey, Rodney and April," said Cappy.
"Hello, Cappy and Isaac," said Rodney.
"So, you two are wearing hand-me-downs?" asked Isaac.
"Yeah, and they've been delivered already. How about you?" asked April.
"Well, yes. I'm wearing them right now, and Cappy is wearing her own too." said Isaac.
"Our hand-me-downs were delivered last week, and mine are from my cousins," said Cappy.
"Same here. My own hand-me-downs have been from one of my cousins too." said Isaac.
"Well, our own hand-me-downs has been one of our cousins as well, and it looks like we have things in common." said Rodney.
"We're not the only ones who have these kinds of things, most other kids have them as well." said Cappy.
"So true. Hey, the Metallic Day parade is starting, guys." said April.
"Let's see it right now," said Isaac.
Rodney, April, Cappy, and Isaac began watching the parade of Metallic Day along with their parents and everybody else in the crowd, and they notice some other robot children having some hand-me-downs for their own new parts just as they smiled since they're not the only ones who receive hand-me-downs for their new parts when they get older. The parade began just as a large marching band marched down the street, many street performers performed on the street, many parade floats in different shapes and sizes went down the street, and many large parade balloons in different shapes and sizes.
The two siblings and their two best friends are really amazed by the Metallic Day as much as their own parents and everybody else are, and they all suddenly see a large parade balloon that resembles a large robot with a unique rotund body, much to their surprise just as Rodney wonders who it was.
"Hey, who is that?" asked Rodney.
"That's Bigweld. One of the greatest robots in the world." explained Herb.
"Really? He's one of the greatest robots in the world? But how?" asked Rodney.
"That's 'cause he's the owner of one of the most successful companies in the world Bigweld Industries," said Herb. "A place where anybody can make their inventions to help people and make their lives' much better. He is an inventor himself, and he's such a genius. He really is."
"But I thought you were one of the greatest robots in the world, Dad." said Rodney.
"Of course, I am, son. Besides Bigweld and anybody else who are the greatest." said Herb. "His very own company is just as successful as any other company in this world, and I heard that he used to have a partnership with the O'Torpedo Corporation many years ago until it was terminated due to the sales of an invention that had flopped in the stores. Eventually, the O'Torpedo Corporation has been losing money for years and it has been shut down."
"Hey, Rodney, what just explained to you is absolutely correct, and I've heard about Bigweld so much before you came along," said April. "I remember all of the inventions he created and sold them in many stores to everybody so he could help them out with making their lives better."
"I've been hearing things about Bigweld too, and he's absolutely an amazing inventor to help change the world," said Isaac.
"And I've heard about Bigweld last week as well, Rodney. It's very true that he's a genius who invent things to help others and make a difference to the world." said Cappy.
"Wow! It's very interesting to learn about somebody who is as wonderful as Bigweld." said Rodney. "Hey, Dad, is there any of these days that I can meet him?"
"Sure, son. You can meet Bigweld someday when you're older." said Herb.
"Hey, so, Dad, what do you usually do which makes you the greatest robot in the world just like Bigweld and anybody else?" asked Rodney.
"Oh, me? I work at a big fancy restaurant called Gunk's Greasy Spoon and I'm a dishwasher." said Herb. "I've been working there before you and April came along, and I'm really good at washing dishes there."
"Wow! That's so cool, Dad. Maybe I can get a job there too before I could meet Bigweld someday." said Rodney.
"Alright. You can work there too, son. As long as you don't 'cause my boss Mr. Gunk to blow a fuse like he usually does." said Herb. "He's always short-tempered and always grumpy."
The two siblings and their two best friends continue watching the parade along with their parents and everybody else, and while they do so, Rodney became greatly amazed upon learning about Bigweld and how he is one the greatest inventors ever who invents anything to help anybody out and make their lives much better in order to change the world, and he quickly began idolizing him and dreams about meeting him someday as well as becoming a famous inventor who invents things to help others in need just like him. Suddenly, Lydia arrives at the parade along with a cart that has a pot of soup, finger sandwiches, and a pitcher of lemonade which she made for the parade, and her family and everybody else began getting some soup, finger sandwiches, and lemonade from the cart since they all enjoy her cooking so much.
The next day, the holiday Metallic Day and its parade is now over, and Rodney and April are preparing to go to school along with their best friends Cappy and Isaac as well as their students. But before they could do so, Herb has decided to show them the place where he works at which is Gunk's Greasy Spoon, and he takes them there during sunrise so they could have some time to make it to Nickel Elementary School without being late at all. They walk throughout the neighborhood and soon arrive at Gunk's Greasy Spoon where he begins showing them how he works there as a dishwasher while the many employees did their hard work and served the customers there, and they are greatly amazed by what it looks like on the inside. Soon, they arrive at the kitchen where Herb begins showing his two kids on how he does his job.
"So, welcome to the place I work at, you two." said Herb.
"Wow! This place is a big fancy restaurant just like you said from before, and it's really awesome too, Dad." said Rodney.
Herb right behind a sink where he washed some of the dishes along with some of his fellow co-workers. "I've been working here at Gunk's Greasy Spoon ever since your sister used to be a baby, Rodney, and I still work here today. Doing the dishes is what I'm really good at, and it really makes me one of the greatest robots in the world."
"Mmm-hmm. Dad has been working at Gunk's Greasy Spoon for so long, even when I was first constructed." said April. "He always told me that doing the dishes here is what he has been talented at, and he told me that he tried to cook some food here, but he isn't that good at cooking just like Mom is."
"That's right, my cooking isn't that tasty just like your mother's." said Herb. "And I remember I did make some omelets for some of the customers of this diner, but they ended up getting sick 'cause of my terrible cooking. So, since I'm really a talented cook just like your mother, I decided to do the dishes instead, and that's what I'm really good at."
Herb continues washing dishes along with some of his co-workers at the sink, and then he gets finished with cleaning them and puts them in with some other dishes that are in a large stack while one of the employees puts them in one of the many drying racks. Herb cleans up some more dishes along with some of his fellow co-workers at the sink, and he gets finished with cleaning them again and puts them in a dryer machine that he is wearing so they could dry in there. Rodney is greatly amazed by how he is really good at doing the dishes at the diner while April is greatly amazed by his job as well.
"You're so awesome at doing dishes even though you can't cook just like Mom, Dad." said Rodney. "It does make you one of the greatest robots in the world besides Bigweld and anybody else."
"Yeah, you've always done a good job on doing the dishes, Dad, and you are absolutely fantastic." said April.
"Thank you very much, you two." said Herb just as he continued cleaning dishes along with his co-workers. "Now it's time for you two to go to school, and you can't be late. I'll see you two later, and have a good day."
"We will, Dad. Bye, and we'll see you later." said April.
"Bye, Dad, and we'll have a good day at school," said Rodney.
Rodney and April then leave the kitchen and leave Gunk's Greasy Spoon just as they both begin heading to the Nickel Elementary School while Herb continues to do his hard work along with the other employees in the kitchen. Later on that morning, Rodney and April have arrived at elementary school where they begin doing their own school work along with their best friends Cappy and Isaac as well as the other students in the classrooms. April and Isaac are in their own classroom doing literature about The 12 Dancing Princesses, and Rodney and Cappy are in their own classroom doing science about chemistry.
While they are doing their schoolwork together along with their classmates which is mixing up different kinds of chemicals in order to make their own chemical reactions, Rodney begins thinking about his dream of being a famous inventor who would invent anything to help people and make their lives better just like Bigweld who he idolizes so much and looks up to. He wishes he could meet when he is older someday so he could start working at Bigweld Industries just like anybody else would just as he began to make his own chemical reaction of gas inflating a balloon. Cappy makes her own chemical reaction of some expanding foam and she suddenly notices Rodney thinking about his dreams of being an inventor, much to her surprise.
"Hey, Rodney, what do you have in your own mind right now? What are you thinking about anyway?" asked Cappy.
"Oh, I'm just thinking about what I'm gonna do when I grow up, and it's being one of the greatest robots in the world just like my idol Bigweld as well as my own Dad." answered Rodney. "How I'm gonna be something like that is to become an inventor and invent things to help people in order to make their own lives better. One of these days, I'll have a chance to meet Bigweld and show him what I can really do so I could work at his company. That's exactly what I wanna do, Cappy, and it's my dream."
"Really? Well, it's wonderful to hear that your dream is to be an inventor just like Bigweld someday when you're older." said Cappy. "Everybody has their own dreams and decides on what they want to do later in their own lives when they grow up. Oh, and since you wanna be an inventor, I have my own dream already, and it's to be a medical doctor one of these days. I wanna help others too, and it's gonna be helping the sick and injured."
"That's a really good idea for your own dream, and it's very true that we all have dreams and would like to do so in our own lives," said Rodney. "Also, my sister April told me that she would like to become a fashion designer and Isaac said he would like to own his own restaurant."
"So, it looks like we four best friends have dreams just like everybody else does," said Cappy. "Oh, I can't wait to make my dream of being a doctor come true, and we already know that April can't wait to make her dreams of becoming a fashion designer come true and Isaac can't wait to make his dreams of owning a restaurant come true as well."
"I can't wait to make my dream of becoming an inventor just like Bigweld too." said Rodney.
Cappy and Rodney continue to do their own chemical experiments for science class along with their classmates, and Rodney continues to think about his own dreams of becoming a famous inventor since he idolizes Bigweld so much and would like to be just like him someday while Cappy thinks about her own dreams of becoming a doctor who would help anybody who became sick and injured someday as well.
Just as time passed by, Rodney grew more and more fascinated with inventing just as he got older and older. Also, he began watching The Bigweld Show on TV every night when it first premiered, and he would get very excited whenever he heard the theme song of the show. Rodney never gets tired of watching the show, and he really enjoyed Bigweld's amazing charm and was amazed by how he built things that are very incredible as well as how he constructed different kinds of patterns with dominoes during the construction of his own inventions. Most of all, Bigweld's own words of encouragement about having dreams was absolutely something a young robot would listen to. One night, Rodney watched one of his favorite episodes on The Bigweld Show on the TV in the living room where Bigweld gives the audience a magnificent tour of his company headquarters in Aluminum City, one of the largest cities in the world of robots.
"Live from one of the wondrous cities known as Aluminum City…it's The Bigweld Show!" said the announcer of The Bigweld Show.
"Woo-hoo! Oh yeah! Uh-huh! The Bigweld Show is on, and it's one of my favorite shows to watch ever!" said Rodney just as he danced around on the couch. He quickly got off the couch and headed to the kitchen to get his father to watch the show alongside him. "C'mon, Dad! You're missing the show already, and you can't miss the greatest show of all time!"
"Alright, Rodney, I'm coming to see The Bigweld Show, and I had to bring some of my work home from my job today," said Herb. "Sorry about that, and the dishes at Mr. Gunk's Greasy Spoon has been piling up lately." He sat on the couch while Rodney sat on his lap.
Rodney and Herb begin watching The Bigweld Show while April arrives at the living room and is reading one of her magazines which is about fashion. She suddenly notices her father and her little brother watching the Bigweld Show together, much to her surprise, and she suddenly quickly smiles at the show since she already knows it's one of his favorite shows to watch. April decides to watch the Bigweld Show along with her father and younger brother just as she sat on the floor, and they notice her begin watching the show along with them just as they both smiled at her.
"Hey, Sis, are you here to see the Bigweld Show with me and Dad?" asked Rodney.
"Well, of course, I am, and I already know you would always watch this when it comes on." said April.
"Sure, I would, and I've been watching it ever since it first came on." said Rodney. "Look, it's now starting."
"And now the host of the show…Bigweld! One of the most famous inventors ever!" the announcer continued.
Bigweld suddenly appeared on the show while he was riding on a flying vehicle. "Welcome to my famous company Bigweld Industries which has been around for so many years. This week, I thought you would like to take a look around my company. This is the front gate, and isn't it so cute?" He then turned to the guard standing outside the gate. "Good morning, Tim."
"Good morning, Mr. Bigweld." said Tim.
"Tim, who closed the front gate?" asked Bigweld.
"Well, actually, I just thought nobody wouldn't show up today and…" said Tim just as he tried to explain.
"Oh, we never shut the gate, and that means shutting out new ideas to help people and make their lives better," said Bigweld.
Rodney, April, and Herb continued to watch the Bigweld Show together, and they all saw a large assembly line of robots with blueprints and mechanical devices right in front of the front gate while Bigweld looked kindly at them and smiled at the viewers.
"You see, robots in different shapes and sizes would usually come to my company every day to bring their own new ideas and I listen to each and every one of them." Bigweld continued.
Some of the robots in the line show their own blueprints and mechanical devices to the viewers, and one of them attempts to activate a jetpack for a moment until it quickly activates and sends his torso flying in the sky while his own legs stay behind.
"So, remember this thing, and it's very important." Bigweld continued. "Whether a robot is made from old parts, new parts, or spare parts, they're perfect in their own way. Anybody can shine no matter what they're made of."
While he continued watching The Bigweld Show along with his father and older sister, Rodney smiled just as he was confident that Bigweld was talking to him and he was destined to become an inventor just like him someday. Bigweld's show is absolutely Rodney's inspiration, and he kept his own words in his head and it held a very special place in his heart. Just as the episode continues, the front gate opens and Bigweld went inside to proceed to do inventing along with the robots.
Inside, the robots went to many workplaces in one of the offices of Bigweld Industries where they began working on their blueprints and mechanical devices so they could help other robots and make their lives better while Bigweld watched them do so just as he smiled at all of them. Then, he entered his own office and began working on his own invention which is a cube-like object that has the power to turn on any old school music, and the cube does old school disco music from the 70s. He turns it on and it begins playing the song Love Machine by The Miracles while a disco ball appears from out of the cube just as he demonstrated it in front of the viewers.
Rodney, his father, and his older sister watched Bigweld demonstrate his cube-like invention which has the power to play disco music from the 70s, and they were absolutely amazed by his own invention so much. Rodney really wanted to be an inventor just like his idol Bigweld so much when he grows up, and he hopes that he will be able to show Bigweld his own ideas to help others when in need and make a world a better place when he becomes an inventor at his successful company at Bigweld Industries someday.
