Moment Twenty Three: Endeavor (MHA)

AN: Spoilers for those who are not caught up with the manga!

Watery dark blue eyes glared at the machines attached to the large man in the hospital bed. The beeping of them letting her know he was still breathing.

Still alive.

Small petite hands rested on her stomach, caressing the barely there bump. She'd only just found out she was with child, a result of the drunken night that moved their relationship from just business to something more.

He was no longer just her boss, but her boyfriend. The word sounded weird to her, even more so when being used to describe the mountain of a man that captured her heart without even meaning to.

He was anything but a boy, he was a man in his prime despite being almost fifty. She herself was no spring chicken, yet here she was with child.

"How is he?" Plastering a smile on her lips she turned to face the speaker, her hands falling to her side, lest she give herself away. Standing in the doorway was a trembling Fuyumi. A sheen of tears in her eyes. Behind her in the hallway lurked Natsuo, doing his best to appear unaffected by the last twenty-four hours.

It was expected, the young man was a lot like his father whether he realized it or not. Stubborn and stoic, refusing to let anyone see him suffering let alone allow himself to lean on anyone for support.

"He's alive, just in a medically induced coma. His burns from...Dabi are extensive." She didn't miss the way the siblings flinched at the mention of their elder brother's villain name. It wasn't pleasant but it had to be done, they had to separate Dabi from Toya.

Yes, Toya and Dabi were one in the same yet, they only knew him as Toya and she would be damned if she let their memories of him be tainted by what he had become. He was still the same sad little boy deep down. Still yearning for his father's approval and love. Yet it was buried under so many layers of hate that it had turned to madness.

There was no saving him and, truthfully, she doubted he wanted to be saved.

Fuyumi's shoulder shook as she lost the fight to hold back her tears. Kagome pulled the younger woman into her arms, rubbing her back as she sobbed into her shoulder. Glancing up she caught Natsuo's gaze and gave him a small smile.

He grit his teeth as he entered the room and wrapped his arms around his sister and herself. Burying his face in the crook of her neck, she could feel his tears wet her shirt yet she said nothing and merely held them.

Whispering comforting words into their locks. Her aura wrapping around them, soothing and loving. She had no doubt if Shoto was still at the hospital he too would be in the private hospital room as well. Yet he had stormed off upon hearing the slurs hurled at his father, himself, and his siblings.

The words were vile, and it sickened her to think that after everything the Todoroki family had been through, they still had even more to overcome.

She had no doubt that once her realtionship with Enji, as well as her pregnancy, was made public it would only stoke the fires. She was ready for it, while not a Todoroki in name she might as well have been.

They were going to learn not to test her when it came to her family.
