Part 3: Reflection between the present
A/N: Sorry for the long delay again…It's been almost over a year since my last update
Inside Aether's Serenity pot
The night quietly faded away, the sun began to rise, and sunlight pierced through the curtains of each room, accompanied by fresh air from the outside. Although the Serenity Pot had its own realm, time in this place still flowed just like the outside world.
In one of the rooms, the blonde Traveler known as Aether lay asleep. His body stirred and stretched several times, signaling that it was time to wake up. However, he found himself having a difficult time doing so, and he wasn't sure why.
Aether's eyes slowly opened, revealing a blurry figure by his side. As his vision cleared, he recognized the sheepish expression on Ganyu's face, framed by her long, silky, light blue hair. But something was different. Horns protruded from her head, glowing softly in the dim light. Memories came flooding back to him.
Yesterday, he had fallen asleep on the sofa, and Ganyu had curled up beside him, her tight grip wrapped around his neck. Her face was buried so deeply in his chest that it seemed like she was afraid he might leave. Aether had enjoyed the warmth and softness of her embrace, but it wasn't the right time for this. He tried to pry out of her embrace, but the more he did, the more tightly she held on.
"Is this the strength of the Adepti!?" he thought to himself in frustration. "Even while sleeping...".
In just a few seconds, Ganyu's eyes slowly fluttered open as she yawned and muttered a few words. "Good morning..."
"Uhhhh...morning," Aether replied, trying to move his hand a little as it was the only action he could do. "Did you sleep well, Ganyu?"
"Yes, thank you," Ganyu replied in a tired voice.
…
…
Wait…who am I talking to?
Her hazy mind was quickly snapped away when she turned and saw the blonde Traveler lying right next to her, waving and laughing faintly. "Can you let me go, please? You're suffocating me...with your chest."
"Ahhhh!" Realizing her embarrassing situation, Ganyu suddenly jerked up and accidentally caused Aether to fall off the sofa and roll over on the floor several times. "I'm sorry, Aether...I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to..." She kept repeating those lines while bowing nonstop.
"I'm fine," Aether said as he stood up, trying to remain calm despite waking up in such a painful way. "You must have been really tired yesterday, anyways."
Meanwhile, the mischievous little fairy took advantage of her flying ability to escape the mess and couldn't stop smirking at them. She even managed to take some pictures of their awkward moment earlier. "Another picture for my precious collection," the fairy thought.
That was how their morning began. During breakfast, both Aether and Ganyu looked down at the table, trying to hide their flushed faces. Their eyes didn't meet even once, while Ganyu kept muttering "I'm sorry..." to Aether, even though he didn't notice or care, as his mind was also preoccupied. Oddly enough, the dishes were still very delicious, and Ganyu ate more of the food at his house than she did yesterday, but she didn't even realize it.
The silence was finally broken when the meal was finished, and they began planning their next task. "So, our next destination is...Liyue Harbor," Aether said, looking at the reception desk where it was written "To Madam Ping." "We're going back to the city. Yay!" Paimon shouted, flying around Aether and Ganyu. "I can't wait to taste more food!"
"That shouldn't be a problem." Ganyu said, pointing to the map to show where Madam Ping was. "How about we take a walk before going back then?"
"Sure," Aether nodded. "There's nothing better than breathing in the fresh morning air."
They made their way back to Liyue Harbor, Aether and Ganyu were both captivated by the stunning scenery surrounding them. The warm sun illuminated the landscape, while a gentle breeze provided a cool reprieve from the heat. The sound of chirping birds and rustling leaves provided a serene soundtrack to their conversation as they strolled along the winding path. They paused frequently to snap pictures and admire the breathtaking views, awestruck by the natural beauty of the world around them.
Ganyu's impressive knowledge of the local flora and fauna was on full display. She pointed out various plants and flowers, occasionally plucking a few to decorate Aether's tea pot or simply add to her collection. Aether was fascinated by her insights and listened with rapt attention, eager to learn more about the natural world that surrounded them.
When they arrived at the outskirts of Liyue Harbor, the little fairy who had flown ahead greeted them with excitement. She eagerly led the way, eager to explore the city streets once again. Aether and Ganyu exchanged a knowing smile, feeling content to be back in the city they called home.
"Welcome back, Lady Ganyu and Hero of Liyue. We hope your trip went well." A guard greeted them warmly.
"Please call me Aether, and everything went well." The blonde Traveler responded. "Thank you for your concern."
The fairy chimed in, curious about something that had been bothering her. "It's kind of strange that you've worked and lived in the city for so long, yet no one has noticed that you don't age at all. Does anyone know that you're an Adeptus?"
Ganyu's mind drifted back to a recent encounter with a pilgrim named Xin Cheng, who had sought blessings from the adepti. She had explained that blessings were earned through hard work, rather than relying solely on the power of the adepti. However, this response had not satisfied Xin, and he had left in a huff, deeming Ganyu useless and unwilling to help him. The encounter had left Ganyu feeling sad, as it only confirmed her internal struggle with her identity as an adepti. She had always wanted to help others and believed that her position as an adepti would allow her to do so.
Ganyu's voice was hesitant as she spoke, revealing her anxiety. "I haven't revealed my true identity as an adeptus or rather, a half-adeptus to many people in Liyue, especially after the Rite of Parting. It's because people still tend to associate me with the blessings of Lex Lapis, and I don't want to be seen as someone who only grants blessings."
"A person's personal life is private, Paimon. It's not polite to pry into it," Aether interjected, telling the fairy to stop asking further.
"Ah, sorry Ganyu." the fairy apologized. "Paimon was just curious."
"It's alright. It's been a long time since someone asked me that question," Ganyu said, smiling. "It has also helped me realize that true strength lies in inspiring and motivating others to work towards their own blessings and goals, rather than solely relying on someone's power."
The group passed through Chihu Rock, they spotted two familiar figures outside Mingxi Jewelry, seemingly in the midst of an argument about buying items. There, they saw Keqing frantically searching for a particular piece of jewelry that was unfortunately marked "Out of Stock," while Ningguang stood by and watched.
"Nooo! It's sold out again!" Keqing's face fell with disappointment. She had been waiting for so long to purchase the jewelry, but it seemed like it was never in stock. "This is the tenth time already..." She glared at Ningguang and growled, "You did this... didn't you!?"
Ningguang smiled calmly and replied, "No, you know that jewelry just arrived today, right?"
"There's no way one person could buy all of them in just a single day but you!" Keqing retorted.
"Do you have any proof then?" Ningguang asked.
"I... Aghhh! Mark my words, vengeance will be mine!" Keqing exclaimed.
Ningguang chuckled at Keqing's hostile attitude towards her. The Tianquan enjoyed teasing others, especially by making Keqing suffer by buying everything before she had a chance to.
"Greetings, Lady Ningguang and Lady Keqing," Ganyu bowed to them. "It's a rare sight to see both of you here."
"Oh, Ganyu and the Traveler!" Keqing greeted them. "We're just discussing some business, that's all."
"But why at the jewelry store? Are you buying something?" Ganyu asked and wandered around as she saw Keqing was holding a bag which was used for shopping.
"There's a case of some jewelry that keeps disappearing in just one day," Keqing explained, sighing. "And somehow they're all my favorite ones..."
Although Aether and Paimon knew who was behind all this, they decided not to reveal it to Keqing. It was enjoyable for them to see Keqing act like a normal girl instead of her usual working attitude, as not many people got to see that side of her.
"Good luck, Keqing. I hope you catch the culprit soon," Aether said, trying to cheer her up, though he couldn't help but laugh inwardly.
"Thanks," Keqing sighed again, knowing it would take a long time to catch the thief. "By the way, how's your task going, Ganyu?"
"It's going well on my side too. Thanks to the Traveler here," Ganyu replied, looking at Aether. "He's helped me a lot."
"Oh, really? That sounds interesting," Ningguang said. "I assume both of you are having a fun time."
"It's been a while since I've gone outside like this," Ganyu replied. "I hope my absence didn't cause too much trouble for our work." She always felt guilty for leaving her duty, even though it was also her mission.
"Don't worry about it. Everything is still going well," Keqing reassured her. "Don't underestimate the Qixing. We may not be as good as Rex Lapis, but that won't stop us from achieving our goals."
While Keqing and Ningguang continued their argument about the jewelry, the trio decided to leave and continue their way to meet Madam Ping. They walked down the streets of Liyue, admiring how much the city had changed. The once desolate and abandoned streets were now filled with life and color. The sound of merchants bargaining with customers filled the air, and the smell of delicious food wafted from nearby stalls. The trio couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to witness the city's transformation firsthand. They knew that this experience would stay with them for a long time to come.
"Ever since that ritual, they have changed so much" The fairy said, looking around the city as it was getting livelier "And more importantly, Keqing seem to be much friendlier to you than before now."
Ganyu and Keqing had always been at odds with each other in Liyue. They had different opinions about how to run the city and had many disagreements about what was best for the people. Their arguments were often heated, and they rarely saw eye to eye. However, everything changed during the Rite of Departing. Ganyu and Keqing's relationship began to shift. They started to see each other in a different light and found that they respected each other's opinions more than they had before.
"After all what happened to, we have come to understand our differences and also share our common ground and we will do our best to rebuild our country" Ganyu said "It's all thanks to you Aether. These whole things wouldn't have happened without you."
"You're flattering me there" Aether giggled while scratching his head. "Everyone made their own choices, for me it all matters. They decided to change despite the hardships they had to go through to move forward and that is what made them who they are today."
"Do you think will I get along with them?" Ganyu asked.
"You mean Keqing and Ningguang? I think you have a good relationship with them," Aether replied. "You seem to work well together, and they both value your opinions and expertise."
"That's good to hear," Ganyu smiled. "I'm glad to have friends like them."
"And we're glad to have you as a friend too," Paimon chimed in. "You're always so kind and helpful to us."
The trio strolled through the vibrant streets of Liyue, savoring the lively atmosphere that surrounded them. As they approached Madam Ping's stall, they greeted her warmly and handed over the second item from Moon Carver.
Madam Ping chuckled and remarked, "So, Moon Carver called you two just to deliver this letter?"
"Yes, ma'am." Paimon nodded, curiosity evident on their face. "What does the letter say?"
With a smile, Madam Ping carefully opened the letter and began reading it aloud, "Dear Ningguang, I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to inquire about the possibility of a partnership between humans and the adepti. I believe that together, we can work towards creating a brighter future for the people of Liyue. Please let me know your thoughts on the matter. Sincerely, Moon Carver."
Ganyu's eyes widened in surprise as she looked at Madam Ping. It seemed that Ningguang was finally willing to set aside their differences and collaborate with the adepti for the benefit of Liyue. Paimon's face lit up with a small smile, and they said, "Well, that's quite unexpected!"
Ganyu nodded in agreement and reflected, "It demonstrates that even former adversaries can become allies when they share a common goal."
Paimon's curiosity peaked as they asked, "But couldn't they have just met in person and delivered the message themselves? Wouldn't that have been more straightforward?"
Ganyu pondered the question for a moment before responding, "While direct communication is valuable, indirect communication can provide the space for careful consideration of words and intentions. It allows both parties to express themselves thoughtfully."
Paimon nodded, satisfied with the explanation. "I guess that makes sense. So, what happens next?"
Madam Ping firmly stated, "Now, I will deliver this letter to Ningguang. If she agrees to the partnership, then we can begin working towards a better Liyue." She then turned her gaze towards Ganyu. "And Ganyu?"
Ganyu's cheeks flushed slightly as she replied "Yes, Madam Ping?"
Madam Ping smiled knowingly and playfully said, "I know you have a special connection with the Traveler here."
Ganyu's eyes widened in surprise, her face turning even redder. "H-how did you know?"
Madam Ping chuckled and replied, "Just a wild guess, my dear."
Ganyu nodded, appreciating the understanding and advice Madam Ping had given to her. She contemplated the potential partnership between humans and adepti and the implications it held for Liyue. It could bring about a new era of collaboration and prosperity, but it could also present its own set of challenges.
After bidding goodbye to Madam Ping, they continued their leisurely walk, Paimon's eyes gleamed with excitement as they spotted a street vendor selling steaming hot buns. Turning to Ganyu, they suggested, "Would you like to try one, Ganyu? They look delicious!"
Ganyu's lips curved into a smile as she agreed, "That sounds wonderful, Paimon. Let's indulge ourselves for a moment."
After purchasing a few buns, they found a nearby bench to sit down and enjoy their snacks. Paimon chatted animatedly about their adventures in Liyue, regaling Ganyu with tales of the interesting people they had encountered.
Ganyu listened intently, savoring the carefree atmosphere and relishing the joy Paimon exuded. These simple moments reminded her of the reasons she held such deep affection for Liyue – a city brimming with surprises and possibilities, with the potential for partnership between humans and adepts.
"We've completed all the tasks!" Paimon exclaimed in excitement. "Let's head back to Jueyun Karst to report to them!"
Ganyu felt a sense of disappointment as she wondered how long their journey together would last. It had only been a week since they met, but she was already beginning to enjoy their time together and didn't want it to end so soon.
"Sure, let me use the teleporter," Aether said, ready to activate his ability.
But before he could do so, Ganyu stopped him. A look of unease briefly crossed her face, causing Aether to ask, "Is there something wrong, Ganyu?"
Ganyu shook her head, trying to find an excuse to delay their departure. "No, nothing. Can we just walk our way there? You said you wanted to make a flower garden, right? There are plenty of fresh flowers along our way, so we can collect some of them."
Aether nodded in agreement, and Paimon asked, "But didn't we already collect some of them before we entered the city?"
Ganyu smiled. "Those were only the normal ones. I know where we can find extremely rare flowers on our way."
The three of them wandered along the path, pausing at various points to pluck the most stunning and unique flowers for Aether's garden. Aether had a keen eye for the rarest and most exquisite specimens, while Paimon was satisfied with collecting whatever caught her fancy. Meanwhile, Ganyu relished the invigorating air and splendid scenery. But as they began ascending a hill, they noticed the clouds gathering overhead and rapidly darkening into an ominous storm. The wind picked up, causing the trees to rustle, and the raindrops started to lash down heavily.
Paimon groaned in dismay. "Ugh, it's raining! We need to find shelter."
Aether was about to use his Serenitea Pot to create a shelter, but Ganyu suddenly grabbed his hand and pulled him along. "Let's run before we get soaked." she exclaimed, leading Aether towards a nearby small cave.
Perplexed by Ganyu's sudden urgency, Aether decided to follow her lead and sprinted as fast as he could. They eventually found shelter in a small cave, although their clothes were thoroughly drenched from the downpour. Luckily, Aether's Anemo powers were helpful in drying them off quickly.
Paimon remarked, "Your powers are quite useful. Perhaps we can find other ways to use them apart from fighting."
Aether chuckled. "Maybe I can open a shop."
"That's a great idea," Ganyu chimed in. "A small shop."
After a few moments of silence, the trio resumed their story from where they had left off at the harbor. Aether noticed Ganyu gazing off into the distance, lost in thought.
"Is something on your mind, Ganyu?" he asked.
Ganyu shook her head. "No, it's nothing. I'm just enjoying the sound of the rain outside," she closed her eyes and listened to the gentle patter of the drops against the ground. "It's a luxury to be able to appreciate it, but I've always found rain to be soothing and calming."
Paimon noticed the hint of nervousness in Ganyu's voice. "Why do you seem nervous then?" she questioned.
Ganyu's gaze dropped, and she spoke softly. "It's just that everything has a beginning and an end," she said. "I feel fortunate to be living in this historic moment in Liyue and to have made so many wonderful friends. But eventually, they will all be gone, and I'll be alone again. It's a cycle that repeats itself."
As an adeptus who had lived for over three thousand years, Ganyu knew that ordinary humans were not meant to live that long. Nevertheless, she had chosen to reside in Liyue Harbor rather than Jueyun Karst in an attempt to integrate with humans, as a part of her also identified with them. Perhaps it was because she felt that she could never truly belong to either group. She found it challenging to fully comprehend the people in both places, no matter how hard she tried.
It was the feeling of…
"Loneliness, right?" Aether interjected slowly, as if he had already guessed the answer.
"How did you know?" Ganyu asked, surprised.
Aether hesitated before responding, unsure if he should share his story as an outsider who did not come from Teyvat. He had been there for less than a year and was still unfamiliar with how everything worked, making it difficult for him to comprehend the thoughts and feelings of people in this world.
"Because I'm like you, one of them," Aether finally said, taking a deep breath and sighing. "An immortal being."
Ganyu remained quiet, analyzing the Traveler she had known for a while. His stunning, long golden hair and radiant eyes captured her attention, particularly his smile. It was hard to tell that he wasn't from this world just by his appearance, like other people in this world.
Aether told her his story, she listened intently, fascinated by his adventures with his sister. She couldn't help but feel a pang of envy, wishing she also had someone to share her endless years with.
"I never thought I'd meet someone else like me beside other adeptus." Ganyu said softly, breaking the silence. "Someone who understands what it's like to watch those you care about age and pass away, while we remain unchanged."
Aether nodded in agreement. "It can be lonely, but we also have the ability to make connections and friendships that last beyond a single lifetime. That's something special, isn't it?"
Ganyu smiled wistfully. "Yes, it is."
Hand in hand, they locked their eyes and dashed outside, unhesitatingly diving into the rain. The heavy downpour was irrelevant as they laughed uncontrollably, embracing the refreshing droplets as they soaked through their hair and clothes. She spun, feeling the raindrops caress her skin and let out a joyful giggle. The rain was a long-awaited gift, and she was grateful for the chance to experience its embrace. Though their actions might seem foolish to onlookers, they didn't care, lost in a moment of serenity and tranquility.
Aether's face beamed as he turned to Ganyu and proposed, "Let's savor this moment!" Despite the rain muffling his words, she caught sight of his gleaming, golden eyes and grinned wider, bursting into more laughter. They frolicked and twirled in the rain, luxuriating in their temporary release from daily obligations and commitments. They hopped in puddles, reveling in each other's company and the sensation of raindrops on their skin. For Ganyu, this moment of pure bliss was a release from her worries and fears. Her soaked clothes and tangled hair didn't matter; she was determined to enjoy every moment.
A moment of unadulterated joy and contentment, a shared experience they wished to treasure forever in their hearts. A memory would remain etched for a lifetime.
It was a sweet rain.
"We should retreat inside," Ganyu whispered, her forehead lightly touching Aether's. "It's not a good idea to return to the Harbor like this."
The pair retreated inside, both soaked to the bone from their time in the rain. Ganyu felt self-conscious about her now-clinging outfit. She had struggled with body image in the past and always maintained a strict diet to avoid triggering memories of those struggles. Even though Aether saw her as beautiful, Ganyu felt like she had to be more than just her appearance.
A wave of embarrassment flooded Ganyu as she looked down at her wet clothes, her mind racing with self-critical thoughts. 'I can't let him see me like this,' she scolded herself under her breath.
Aether offered to use his power to dry her clothes, but Ganyu quickly turned away, asking in a low voice, "Wait! Can you dry my clothes with your eyes closed, please?"
Aether was initially confused by Ganyu's request, but he quickly agreed to help, wanting to make sure she felt comfortable. In no time, they were both dry and ready to continue their journey.
The rain slowly tapered off, they found themselves standing on a grassy knoll, overlooking the stunning Liyue landscape. The rain had revitalized the scenery, leaving everything sparkling and vibrant, with the air clear of dust and haze.
It didn't take long for Aether and Ganyu to reach Jueyun Karst, where they quickly found Moon Carver and reported their success in finding the requested materials. He was grateful for their help and praised their efficiency. The gentle mist that blanketed the area added to the serene atmosphere as they made their way through the winding paths of the karst. It was not long before they caught sight of Moon Carver, Cloud Retainer and Xiao, whose was waiting patiently by a small waterfall.
Moon Carver's eyes lit up with recognition and appreciation. "Ah, my friends, you have returned," he exclaimed with a warm smile. "I knew I could count on you."
After recounting their story, Aether and Ganyu felt a sense of accomplishment as Moon Carver inspected them closely. "Excellent, excellent," he muttered, nodding his head in satisfaction. "You two have done a fine job. Your efficiency is impressive."
Proud of their success, Aether and Ganyu exchanged a glance before bidding farewell to Moon Carver, promising to assist him again in the future if needed.
They teleported back to Liyue, walking in silence and taking in the beauty of their surroundings. Streetlights illuminated the deserted streets as most people had already headed home for the day, leaving only a handful on night duty. Although these individuals noticed their late return, they respected the pair's privacy and didn't pry any further.
The group arrived at Ganyu's office in Yuehai Pavilion, with only the two of them and the fairy present. "So, I suppose our task here is complete," the fairy stated. "This should be our last assignment before we depart...Paimon will miss this place."
Ganyu was taken aback; she had no prior knowledge of their departure. "You're leaving? Where to?" she asked.
"To Inazuma," the fairy replied. "It's our next destination on our journey. Ningguang informed us that Beidou will be arriving tomorrow, and we'll be departing from there."
Conflicting emotions wrestled inside Ganyu as she saw Aether standing there. She was about to say something to him. But unlike Aether's usually cheerful expression was replaced by a pensive frown.
"Ganyu...there is something I want to say," Aether began to speak.
"Yes?"
Ganyu's heart was filled with anticipation as she waited for him to speak. Her eyes were fixed on him, filled with hope that after all the time they had spent together, she might finally get an answer about her feelings toward him. However, she realized that perhaps she had been expecting too much.
Before he could open his mouth to speak, he suddenly hesitated, leaving Ganyu and Paimon confused about Aether's sudden change in behavior. After taking a deep breath, he spoke again.
"All I wanted to say..." Aether looked at Ganyu with a tired expression. "Thank you for being with me all this time. I wish we could have spent more time together...I guess this is the end for us now."
Ganyu was speechless. So many things had happened in such a short time, and Aether's fragile smile only confused her more. What was he talking about? Why did he say something like that?
She didn't know how to respond. She wanted to tell him that she wanted to be with him too, but her words were caught in her throat. Her heart was racing, and her throat was dry. She felt like her heart was about to burst out of her chest at any moment.
"Aether…I-" Ganyu's voice trailed off as Aether interrupted.
"You don't need to say anything, Ganyu." Aether forced a smile and quickly turned to Paimon. "Let's head back and prepare for our trip tomorrow."
Paimon could sense the tension and helplessness between Ganyu and Aether. She wanted to do something to keep them together, but she knew it was impossible.
Ganyu extended her hand, but he vanished before she could even touch him. A sense of loss and confusion washed over her. She didn't understand why he had behaved in that manner, and she wanted to express her true emotions to him. However, he was gone before she could do so, leaving Ganyu alone in her office.
Aether was struggling with his own thoughts. He didn't know when his journey would end, and he was uncertain if anyone would accept him if they knew his true origin. He didn't want to put anyone he loved in danger, so he was determined to complete his mission alone. As for Ganyu, she had her own duties and couldn't just leave everything behind to go with him.
Ganyu was overwhelmed with emotions. She cried herself to sleep, thinking about the memories she had with Aether and how much she would miss him.
Their fate would be determined by their own choices.
