"Ah, it's never too early."

"Well, considering he's barely developed hands, James, I think it might be a spot premature."

Lily and James stood in the back of Ollivander's, watching the summer rush of future Hogwarts students as they tried out wands. Lily clasped her hands over her swollen stomach, and James cast an appraising eye over them.

"This is weird," Lily insisted.

"I'm a parent," James said airily.

"Not to any of them!"

A little girl set a long box marked 'oak' on the growing stack of ill-fits.

"How's that one? Good for Charms?"

"James!"
