2 and a half years ago
Adrian invited Natalie and Julie to spend the night. They accepted the invitation. That night Julie was having trouble sleeping. Adrian noticed the way she was tossing and turning.
"Hang on a second Julie," Adrian said, "I'm going to give you something to help you sleep. Go wash your hands."
Oh GOD, Natalie thought to herself, What is he going to give my daughter?"
Julie went to wash her hands. Adrian came back.
"Here you go," he said, "This always helps me sleep."
"Thank you, Mr. Monk," Julie said.
She was touched by his generosity. She hugged him and he returned the hug. He tucked her back into bed.
Julie was asleep in seconds.
"Mr. Monk," Natale asked when he returned from the kitchen, "What did you give her?"
"I just gave her my Trudy pillow," Adrian said, "It's not-"
"I'm sorry. I think I must have hallucinated. You gave her your Trudy pillow?"
"Yes Natalie," Adrian replied, "It's not a big thing. It always helped me sleep so-"
"Mr. Monk that's a huge thing. You never let anyone use that pillow."
"Julie's not just anyone," Adrian told Natalie.
"Can I ask you something," Natalie questioned, "Whenever the people you love are going through a tough time you come through for them."
"That's a comment," Adrian teased, "Not a question."
"What makes you do that," she asked.
Adrian paused for a moment.
"One time Trudy went through a difficult period of time through no fault of her own," he began, "Of course, I resolve the issue. Trudy once asked me if I would have protected her even if she had been at fault. Of course, I would have. She then asked me if I would have loved her if she had been at fault. I told her, "Love isn't a faucet. You can't just turn it off.""
Natalie nodded.
"Honestly," Adrian continued, "She could have had an affair and I would have loved her just as much. She never did. She never would. But it wouldn't have changed my love for her even if she had."
"Your love is unconditional," Natalie replied grinning.
"Unconditional love is the only kind of love that's worthwhile," Adrian replied.
