Verdant Cavern and Melemele Trial
The next morning, after having breakfast, the Eds, Sarah, and Jimmy exit the Pokemon Center.
"So this Verdant Cavern is where the first trial's being held?" asked Eddy.
"Yes, and from what I heard; trial goers cannot continue up to Route 3 until the trial's completed." replied Edd.
"So where is Verdant Cavern, Double-D?" asked Ed. Edd pulls up the map on the Rotom Pokedex and looks at it, then at a path.
"Why it's actually not far from here; a short walk down this path as a matter of fact." replied Edd, pointing down a path. They look down the path to see a cave; and Captain Ilima standing in front of it, waving at them. The group walks over to him.
"Hey, Captain Ilima." said Sarah.
"Hello, everyone." replied Captain Ilima.
"Is this where this island's trial is being held?" asked Jimmy.
"Yes, it is." said Captain Ilima.
"So, we'll be having a Pokemon battle with you to earn the right to face Kahuna Hala?" asked Jimmy.
"Actually, you won't be facing me; you'll be battling a Totem Pokemon instead that resides here in Verdant Cavern." said Captain Ilima.
"Totem Pokemon?" asked Ed.
"They're like regular Pokemon, but a lot bigger, trained by me and the other trial captains." replied Captain Ilima. "You must first earn the right to face the Totem Pokemon by completing a task; once you've accomplished the task, you'll earn the right to battle the Totem Pokemon; once you've beaten the Totem Pokemon, you'll earn the Normalium Z."
"Normalium Z? Is that one of the Z-Crystals Kahuna Hala told us about?" asked Edd.
"Precisely." said Captain Ilima. "So, which one of you will take on the trial first?"
"I do! I do!" exclaimed Sarah. "Ladies first after all." Captain Ilima steps away from the cave entrance to allow Sarah to enter. "So what's this task?"
"You must defeat three Rattatas that are in this cave." said Captain Ilima. "Please note that until you've beaten the Totem Pokemon, you are not allowed to capture any other Pokemon inside the cave."
"Piece of cake." said Sarah.
"Cake? Where?" asked Ed, looking around. Edd gives Sarah the Rotom Pokedex.
"If you see any Pokemon we haven't seen yet, Sarah, use this on it." said Edd.
"Okay, Double-D." said Sarah as she enters the cave.
"Good luck, Sarah." said Jimmy.
"Luck is for losers with no skills." said Sarah.
"That's the spirit, Sarah." replied Edd. Inside the cave, Sarah is looking around the cave for Rattatas when she sees one stepping out of a burrow. Sarah pulls Ledyba's pokeball out of her pocket.
"Go, Ledyba!" said Sarah, throwing Ledyba's pokeball and releasing her. "Use Mach Punch!" Ledyba flies at Rattata with incredible speed and punches it, dealing super effective damage and knocking it out. "Good thing Eddy told me about Mach Punch when you learned it, Ledyba." Ledyba nods in response. Minutes later, Ledyba defeats a second Rattata. "Two down, one to go." She looks around for a Rattata, when she sees a pudgy, black, and cream colored, ratlike Pokemon sticking his head out of a burrow. "What is that?" The Rotom Pokedex floats in front of the pokemon.
"Raticate, the Mouse Pokemon, and the evolved form of Rattata. It commands a nest of Rattata. Different nests don't get along, whipping up severe fights over feeding grounds." said the Rotom Pokedex.
"I wonder if Captain Ilima will count Rattata's evolved form as one of the Pokemon to beat." said Sarah. Raticate climbs back into the burrow; seconds later, it pokes its head out another one. "Hey, get back here!" She and Ledyba run/flew to the burrow Raticate was at. When they got to the burrow, Raticate went inside it. It suddenly went back out it. Confused, Sarah looks up to see two Team Skull members dancing in front of the burrow where Raticate was. "Hey! What are you creeps doing here?!" The two Team Skull members turned towards Sarah.
"Hey. Isn't that Ed's little sister?" asked one Team Skull member.
"I think she is." replied the other Team Skull member. "Maybe we'll have an easier time battling her." A Team Skull member hops down from the ledge and in front of Sarah.
"You want a Pokemon battle? Fine!" exclaimed Sarah. The Team Skull member pulls out a pokeball.
"Go, Drowzee!" said the Team Skull member, throwing a pokeball and releasing a Drowzee.
"Ledyba, Swift!" said Sarah. Ledyba releases stars from her body and they hit Drowzee, knocking it back.
"Drowzee, Pound!" said the Team Skull member. Drowzee leaps at Ledyba.
"Reflect!" said Sarah. A rainbow-colored barrier appears in front of Ledyba and Drowzee pounds it, doing only a little damage to Ledyba, sending her flying back a little. "Now Tackle!" Ledyba flies at Drowzee and rams it, knocking it to the ground with swirly eyes.
"No way!" exclaimed the Team Skull member.
"Good work, Ledyba." said Sarah. The Team Skull member returns Drowzee to its pokeball.
"Bummer. Beaten by a little girl." said the Team Skull member.
"Let's blow this cave." said the other Team Skull member. The member Sarah beat throws pokedollars at Sarah's feet and the Team Skull members run away. As Sarah picks up pokedollars, the Raticate walks over to her and goes into a battle stance.
"You want to battle me? Fine with me." said Sarah. "Ledyba, Mach Punch!" Ledyba flies at Raticate, and punches it in the face, knocking it out. "You did it, Ledyba." Ledyba spins in the air, happily.
"Little girl!" someone calls out. Sarah looks to see a man in front of an entrance. Sarah walks over to him.
"Congratulations. You have proven your strength against those three Pokemon and have earned the right to face the Totem Pokemon in this den." said the man.
"Oh boy." said Sarah. The man steps away from the entrance to the den. Sarah sprays Ledyba with a potion to heal her from her battle with Team Skull, even though it wasn't a challenge, she still wanted Ledyba at full health.
She then enters the den and looks around. She sees a pedestal up ahead with a crystal that had a symbol that looked like a circle surrounded between two curved lines. "I see the Z-Crystal, but where's this Totem Pokemon?" She takes the Z-Crystal from the pedestal. She hears movement from above. She looks up to see a huge Raticate looking down at her. "That must be the Totem Pokemon!" The Totem Pokemon jumps down from the ledge it was on and in front of Sarah. She and Ledyba face the Totem Pokemon. "You ready, Ledyba?" Ledyba nods. The giant Raticate was suddenly surrounded by an orange aura. "I don't know what that is, but that won't save you! Ledyba, Mach Punch!" Ledyba flies at the Totem Pokemon and punches it in the gut, dealing super effective damage, but it was still standing. "Whoa. This Pokemon's tough." The Totem Pokemon lets out a cry. Sarah and Ledyba looks up and sees a Rattata jumping down from a high ledge next to the giant Raticate. "Calling backup, huh? Well, my Ledyba's not going to hide behind any of my Pokemon!" The Rattata leaps at Ledyba and wags its tail onto her. "I think that was Tail Whip." The Totem Pokemon lunges at Ledyba. "Reflect!" Ledyba creates another barrier and the giant Raticate bites onto it, taking some of the damage, but still doing damage to Ledyba. "Use Swift!" Ledyba releases stars from her body and they hit both the Totem Pokemon and the Rattata. Rattata collapses while the Totem Pokemon struggle to stay on its feet. It charges at Ledyba and rams her, knocking her back. "Use Mach Punch!" Ledyba flies at the giant Raticate and punches it in the gut. It stood there, glaring at Ledyba for a few seconds before collapsing.
"You did it, Ledyba, you did it!" Sarah exclaims. Ledyba smiles, but then she freezes. "Ledyba?" She begins to glow. "Ledyba, you're evolving!" She begins to change. When the glowing stopped, she now had a slightly humanoid form, her eyes were now completely blue, she had four arms with white hands, and two legs with red feet. "Wow!" The Rotom Pokedex flies in front of the newly evolved Ledyba.
"Ledian, the Five Star Pokemon, and the evolved form of Ledyba. It flies through the night sky, sprinkling sparkly dust. According to some, if that dust sticks to you, good things will happen to you." said the Rotom Pokedex. Sarah returns Ledian to her Pokemon and turns around and leave the den. What they didn't know was as soon as they left, another Normalium Z appeared in the pedestal. Sarah walks out of the cave. The Eds and Jimmy walk over to her.
"So how did you do, Sarah?" asked Ed. Sarah shows them the Normalium Z.
"Congratulations, Sarah." said Edd. Captain Ilima walks over to Sarah.
"Yes. Congratulations, indeed." said Captain Ilima. "By defeating the Totem Pokemon, you have indeed passed the trial."
"Yay! I passed the trial and my Ledyba evolved!" cheered Sarah.
"Your Ledyba evolved?" asked Jimmy. Sarah nods and lets Ledian out of her pokeball. "Wow, neat."
"Okay, Sarah. To activate that Normalium Z, you must put it into your Z-Power Ring." says Captain Ilima. Sarah does as she's instructed. "Now if you have a Pokemon that knows a normal type move, it can use the power of the Normalium Z to use a Z-Power Move."
"Cool." said Ed.
"Now to activate a Z-Power Move, you must strike this pose." said Captain Ilima. He goes on and shows the group a series of movements that ends with a pose that involved using his arms to make a circle.
"That's...interesting." said Edd. Captain Ilima looks at Sarah.
"Would you like to try the move with your new Ledian?" asked Captain Ilima.
"Okay." said Sarah. Just then, a Yungoos comes crawling out of some nearby grass.
"Perfect. You can try the Z-Move out on that Yungoos over there." said Captain Ilima. Sarah nods and she, along with her Ledian, stare down the Yungoos.
"The name of the Normalium-Z's Power Move is called Breakneck Blitz." said Captain Ilima.
"Got it." said Sarah. She goes on to strike the pose that Captain Ilima showed her and the others. All of a sudden, her body started flowing with power.
"Geez Louise!" said Eddy.
"That is so awesome!" said Ed. The power poured out from Sarah and flowed directly into Ledian, causing a strange, yellow-glowing, symbol appear in front of her, and making her body surge with power.
"This is remarkable!" said Edd.
"Ledian! Use Breakneck Blitz!" said Sarah. Ledian moves towards the Yungoos at incredibly fast speed and slams into it with incredible force, knocking it out. Everyone, including Sarah, were astounded by the Z-Move's power.
"That is so awesome!" said Ed.
"Quite extraordinary!" said Edd. Captain Ilima looks at the boys.
"So, who's next?" asked Captain Ilima. Jimmy quickly steps forward.
"I'll go next!" said Jimmy.
"Very well." said Captain Ilima as he waves his hand towards the cave opening. Jimmy runs in without delay. Soon, Jimmy defeated the Rattatas and the Totem Pokemon, clearing the trial with the help of Lucario and his Aura Sphere move. After he grabs the Normalium Z that mysteriously appeared in the pedestal that Sarah got hers, he heads towards the cave entrance. He jumps off ledges as a way to reach it faster. As he does, he sees a disc near one of the ledges.
"What's this?" asked Jimmy as he picks it up. "Maybe Double-D or Captain Ilima will know". He then exits the cave, holding out his Normalium Z for everyone to see.
"Well done, Jimmy." said Captain Ilima when he sees Jimmy with his new Normalium Z crystal. Jimmy reaches into his pocket and pulls out the disc-like object.
"I found this in the cave." said Jimmy.
"Why that's a TM!" said Edd.
"You mean those things that can help your Pokemon instantly learn a new move?" asked Jimmy.
"Very good." said Edd. He gets a closer look at the TM. "This says that the TM is for a move called Brick Break. I believe that's a fighting type move."
"Should I teach it to Lucario?" asked Jimmy.
"If he can learn it, I don't see why not." said Edd. The Rotom Pokedex flies out of Edd's backpack and a small slot opens up in it.
"To use the TM, insert it into my drive and hold out Lucario's pokeball." said the Rotom Pokedex. Jimmy does as he's instructed. A beam of light comes out of one of the Rotom Pokedex's eyes and goes into the button on Lucario's pokeball. A few seconds later, it stops.
"Thank you, Rotom." said Jimmy. The Rotom Pokedex flies back into Edd's backpack.
"So, who's next?" asked Captain Ilima.
"I'll be next." said Ed. He then runs inside the cave. After completing the task, he faces the Totem Pokemon with his Rowlet. A minute later, the Totem Pokemon's Rattata ally laid on the ground with swirly eyes while it was breathing heavily. "Rowlet, Razor Leaf!" Rowlet flaps his wings and releases a couple of green leaves that hit the Totem Pokemon, knocking it out. "We did it, Rowlet!" His Rowlet smiles in response. He suddenly begins to glow. "Rowlet, you're evolving!" When the glowing stopped, Rowlet was taller, his face and lower half of his body was white while the rest of his head was brown, his upper jaw was white while his lower jaw was orange, he had orange talons, a large green leaf curved around the right side of his face while a shorter one curved around the left side of his face, his wings were white with green leaves close to his body, he still had two leaves near his chin that resembled a bowtie, but two more leaves formed a tail near his rear. "Cool." Ed then grabs the Normalium Z and exits the cave with his newly evolved Rowlet.
"Ed! Did your Rowlet evolve?" asked Edd.
"You bet your sweet bippy he did." replied Ed. Edd takes out the Rotom Pokedex and points it at the newly evolved Rowlet.
"Dartrix, the Blade Quill Pokemon, and the evolved form of Rowlet. Supremely sensitive to the presence of others, it can detect opponents standing behind it, flinging its sharp feathers to take them out." said the Rotom Pokedex.
"Congratulations, Dartrix." said Edd. Dartrix nods in response.
"So did you get the Normalium Z, big guy?" asked Eddy. Ed takes the Normalium Z out of his pocket and shows it to him.
"Congratulations, Ed." said Captain Ilima. He then turns towards Edd, and Eddy. "So, which of you boys would like to go next?"
"I believe I shall." replied Edd.
"Very well; proceed." said Captain Ilima. Edd enters the cave and has his Popplio battle the Ratattas, using his Disarming Voice on them. After defeating the regular Rattatas, she froze up and started to glow.
"Popplio, you're evolving!" said Edd. Popplio started to change right before Edd's eyes. When she stopped glowing, Edd sees she was bigger, she was a lighter shade of blue, her ears stood straight up and looked like two white orbs joined together, and she looked like she was wearing a white skirt. The Rotom Pokedex flies out of Edd's backpack and flies over to Edd's newly evolved Pokemon.
"Brionne, the Pop Star Pokemon, and the evolved form of Popplio. It attacks by smacking its enemies with the exploding water balloons that it creates." said the Rotom Pokedex before flying back into Edd's backpack.
"Remarkable." said Edd. He soon reaches the Totem Pokemon and brings out his Trumbeak to battle it, using his Rock Smash move on it until it was defeated. He soon grabs the Normalium Z that was in the pedestal and exits the cave.
"Congratulations, Double-D." said Captain Ilima as he sees Double-D exit the cave, holding his Normalium Z crystal.
"Thank you." said Edd. Eddy then steps forward.
"Looks like it's my turn." said Eddy. He runs into the cave to begin his trial. He uses Litten to battle the Rattatas inside. After the regular Rattatas were defeated, Litten started to glow. "Sweet! You're evolving now!" Litten started to change before Eddy's eyes. When he stopped, he was a lot bigger, the bottom half of his body was orange with two black stripes around each of his ankles, a long streak of orange fur went up the front of his head, his tail now had two orange stripes going around the near tip of it, and on his neck was a yellow glowing orb. He soon reached the Totem Pokemon and used his newly evolved Litten to defeat it and its Rattata ally, using Fire Fang a few times. After he grabs the Normalium Z, he returns his evolved Litten to his pokeball and starts walking towards the cave entrance.
As Eddy walks, he hears the flapping of wings coming from above him. He looks up and sees a purple Pokemon with large ears, batlike wings, dark gray fur around its chest and waist, and a purple mark on its nose, flying towards him.
"What's that Pokemon?" asked Eddy. "The bat wings it has reminds me of my old Crobat." Eddy pulls out his Ekans' pokeball and lets him out of it. "Okay, Ekans. Use Leer." Ekans stares harshly at the purple Pokemon, making it nervous. The Pokemon flaps its wings, releasing a gust of wind which hits Ekans and knocks him back. "Oh yeah?! Ekans, use Poison Sting!" Ekans opens his mouth and releases a barrage of needles which hit the Pokemon. It then responds by flying at Ekans and slams into him. "Ekans, use Wrap!" Ekans launches himself at the Pokemon, wraps himself around its body, and starts squeezing. Eddy quickly grabs an empty pokeball and throws it at the Pokemon, hitting it, and sucking it in. After the pokeball wiggles a bit, it clicks, indicating a successful capture. Eddy returns Ekans to his pokeball and exits the cave.
"Did you get your Normalium Z, Eddy?" asked Edd. Eddy smiles and pulls it out of his pocket.
"You did it, Eddy!" said Ed.
"You know it!" said Eddy. He pulls out his new Pokemon's pokeballs and releases them. The Rotom Pokedex flies out of Edd's backpack and over to Eddy's newly evolved Litten.
"Torracat, the Fire Cat Pokemon, and the evolved form of Litten. When its mane is standing on end, you can tell it's feeling good. When it isn't feeling well, its fur will lie down flat." said the Rotom Pokedex.
"Your Litten evolved!" cheered Ed. The Rotom Pokedex flies over to the purple Pokemon.
"Noibat, the Sound Wave Pokemon. It flies around in search of fruit to eat. It uses ultrasonic waves to detect which fruits are ripe." said the Rotom Pokedex. Eddy quickly looks at the Rotom Pokedex at his new Noibat's information.
"Okay. This says my new Noibat is a girl, she knows Screech, Supersonic, Tackle, Absorb, and Gust. She has the Frisk ability which lets her know if an opposing Pokemon is holding an item." said Eddy.
"We did it! We all passed the trial!" cheered Ed. Captain Ilima walks over to them.
"Congratulations, everyone." said Captain Ilima. "By passing this trial, you've all earned the right to battle Kahuna Hala."
"Sweet!" said Eddy. They look down Route 2 and see someone moving a barricade that was blocking the road out of the way.
"If you keep going down this road, you will eventually reach Iki Town where Kahuna Hala will be waiting for you." said Captain Ilima.
"Very well." said Edd. Ed's stomach starts to growl.
"My stomach wants food, guys." said Ed.
"Okay. Let's go get some lunch, we've earned it." said Eddy. The group head down to the Pokemon Center. Once there, they give the nurse their Pokemon and walk over to the cafeteria to celebrate passing their trials.
