It's been a year since I ran away. Should I go back? Zai asked herself this question every day. But the answer was always the same. No, I will never go back.
Wrapped up in her thoughts, she didn't notice him until he was right in front of her. "Who are you and what do you want?" She demanded, readying fireballs at her fingertips.
"I am Zuko. All I wanted was firewood, but if you want to fight, then we will fight." He also readied fire. Another firebender? Zai thought.
"So... you're not going to hurt me?" She extinguished her fire.
"Not if you don't hurt me." Zuko said. Zai looked down, embarrassed.
"I'm sorry, I'm always on my guard. Running away does that to a person." She apologized. His expression suddenly became interested and curious.
"You ran away?" He asked. Zai nodded.
"Did you? I mean, you're in the woods alone. Not that you look like a runaway..." I'm rambling, Zai thought. He gave a half-smile.
"Well, kind of. I'm with the Avatar." He didn't seem to be bragging.
"Wow, the Avatar."
"You look like somebody that he'd be interested to meet. We're all runaways, in a way."
"A group full of runaways?" Zai looked impressed. Zuko nodded.
"You should come with us." Normally I'd have been running away. what IS it with him? Zai wondered. Then she did something so unbelievable, even to herself.
"I'd like that, thanks." She grinned and followed him through the woods.
Okay, so this wasn't as interesting as I'd hoped it would be... I just don't have enough time to write big, long chapters describing every little detail. That's why this is mostly dialogue. And I bet your wondering how old Zai is. She's 15, a year younger than Zuko. And if you don't like fluff, then I suggest that you skip a couple of the later chapters that are coming...
