A/N: Ok guys, here's the final chapter of Beth! If you're still reading this, thank you so much for sticking with this story for literal years! It ended up being way longer than I meant it to, but I'm really grateful to anyone who's read this story with me as I wrote it, and anyone who's just picking it up now, I don't write so much anymore but it really is my happy place, so thank you guys for keeping me motivated and helping me enjoy it again.
I imagine this ending as kind of a jumping off point for the characters, like if we checked in on the family in like 5 years we'd see Beth telling Lucy she's gonna love school, Quinn doing something amazing with her degree and Puck running the tire shop and getting all emotional over his little girl going to school again, so I hope you enjoy this last round with our little family!
"You guys ready to see mommy graduate from school?" Puck asked his children as they made their way into the courtyard of Yale University, and took seats in the second row, baby Lucy on his lap and Beth sitting to their left at the end of the row, her legs swinging excitedly.
"Yeah!" Beth nodded, while the baby chattered happily in his arms. The head professor of the university walked out at that moment, silencing the crowd as Puck 'shh'ed Beth.
"Shh!" she said in return, putting her finger to her lips as she mimicked his gesture, and he couldn't help but smile.
"It is with great pleasure," the man, whose name Quinn had told him a hundred times but Puck seemed to have forgotten, said into the microphone "that I present to you the graduating students of Yale University;" there was a round of applause, and soon he was reading out names alphabetically. By the time he got to G, Puck's hands were sore from clapping and Beth had given up all together. He looked down as an apparently popular girl got her degree and the area was filled with thunderous applause to find that Lucy had fallen sound asleep against him, and he hoped that she was the last cool kid to graduate, and that no applause like that would wake her up.
Puck knew the valedictorian was announced last, and once they reached the last name on the list, he leaned over to talk to Beth,
"Mommy's up next!" she perked up immediately, and stared with rapt attention as the man called out,
"And our valedictorian, Quinn Fabray!"
"Puckerman," Puck muttered under his breath, but still smiled at her all the same as she received her degree and approached the lectern.
"Friends, family, staff and my fellow classmates at Yale University, I am deeply honored to have been chosen as this year's valedictorian, and I'd like to tell you all a little story, if that's alright. When I was told I was going to be valedictorian, I spent that entire night hunched over a laptop, trying to write my speech, but drawing a blank until my daughter came to sit on my lap, and she said, 'write about me!'"
"That's you!" Puck whispered to Beth as she beamed at him.
"I know it might shock some of you that, as a college graduate, I have a 6 year old daughter, but it's no secret on campus that I not only have a daughter, but I'm recently married and have new baby daughter. I know it's frowned upon to have kids in high school, or even before you are married and settled financially, but my husband and I--" she stole a glance at Puck, and he winked at her "have never been that conventional anyway." a couple of people let out chuckles, and she let a smile cross her face before she continued "When my first daughter came along, it was clear to me that my high school life was never going to take me anywhere out of Lima, Ohio, and I was destined for flipping burgers and everything else that teenage parents end up doing, but through a lot of hard work and the support of my family, I was able to turn my life around. When I say family, as much as I mean my mother, she wasn't exactly supportive in the beginning," she stole a glance at her mother, who sat to Puck's right and hung her head "now I have her undying support, of course, and for that I am always grateful, but in this instance I mean what we used to call our glee family; eleven of the most amazing people that I am blessed to call my friends, and a truly incredible glee club coach. They helped me see that I was more than just my mistakes, and I can say without a doubt, that they are the reason I'm standing in front of you today. I truly believe that with the support of those who love and care about you, there isn't anything you can't achieve, and that's what I want you to take away from your time at Yale; while your degrees are a result of hard work and persistence, I think I can speak for at least most of us when I say, they are as much a product of our dedication to our field as they are of our families' undying dedication to our wellbeing and therefore success. Thank you," the courtyard erupted in applause, and Puck flinched as he looked down at Lucy, but she was still sleeping soundly in his arms.
"Thank you Miss Fabray," the professor said, and Puck stopped himself from correcting him under his breath as he watched Quinn shake the man's hand and stand by her classmates "I now present to you, the graduating class of Yale University!" again, the audience erupted in cheers as the students threw their caps in the air, and Puck beamed with pride.
Later, after Quinn had mingled with university personnel and over emotional family and friends, she made her way over to her little family, who were talking with Rachel,
"Congratulations, Quinn!" she gushed, pulling the blonde into a bone-crushing hug "You're the only one who's plans actually worked out on the first try!" Quinn knew that wasn't true; her high school and young adult experience so far was certainly nothing like she expected when she first put on her Cheerios uniform, but she settled for letting Rachel's comment pass and smiling instead,
"Thanks Rach,"
"I must go, but congratulations again!" Rachel said before disappearing into the crowd.
"Does anyone get lightheaded whenever she talks, or is it just me?" Puck asked, and Quinn playfully punched him in the arm "congrats babe, I'd better step up my game if I'm gonna be married to a college graduate!"
"You're kidding, right?" Quinn asked as she took Lucy into her arms and Puck picked up Beth and sat her on his hip "You're perfect." she pecked his lips "This is perfect,"
