THIRD POV
It had been two days since Master Mundi had told Dwalin that Alexa was alive. And it had been two days since they had tried the impossible.
— Flash back —
Dwalin stared dumbfounded at the Jedi Master, his eyes darting from Alexa's prone body, to the master's hand on hers, then finally to the Master himself. The Dwarf was speechless, words failed him and he wet his lips to say something when someone bet him to it. Someone who had heard the entire conversation from the shadows.
"Alexa sh-" Bilbo paused, his fingers gripping the door. "She is still alive?" He asked, a faint spark of hope brewing behind his eyes.
Ki-Adi Mundi's eyes flickered to Bilbo, as if knowing he was there all along. "Barely, but yes," he replied, then looked away in deep thought. The Jedi Master himself was still coming to terms with his late padawan's survival.
Dwalin cleared his throat. "So, yer can save her?"
Mundi frowned, "I am sorry, but no, there is nothing I can do." He replied, softly placing her hand to rest on her chest.
Bilbo's fingers played in the pocket of his coat when an idea struck him. "What if there was a way to save her?" He piped up, once more gaining the Jedi Masters attention.
Ki-Adi Mundi squinted his eyes at the Hobbit, the gears in his binary brain rotating as he analysed Bilbo's words. "Something on your mind?"
Bilbo cleared his throat. "You said that she had powers no other Jedi possessed. So, what if we used her power to save her?" He explained, which got him a confused look in return. "She used the force to heal Dwalin when he was stabbed with her lightsaber. So, doesn't that mean that a part of Alexa is within Dwalin?" He said, gaining a nod from a now hopeful Dwalin.
Ki-Adi Mundi stared at the Hobbit, deep in thought. "It is well known that the force is an energy that surrounds and binds all living things together. It has been theorised but I don't believe it has ever been done before so whether it works or not, I do not know." He said.
"Tell me wha' ta do," Dwalin grunted, the desperation in his voice becoming apparent.
Ki-Adi Mundi then looked at Dwalin whose eyes no longer oozed anguish but held hope. "Concentrate on the area that Alexa has healed. Feel the force and imagine it going from you to her." He replied, "I cannot guarantee it will work but I hope it does. May the force be with you." And with one last look at Alexa, Master Ki-Adi Mundi disappeared.
— End of Flashback —
It had been two days since Master Ki-Adi Mundi had told Dwalin how to save Alexa. Two days had gone by and nothing had changed.
Dwalin sat on the ramparts, his eyes set on the battlefield. He had been in battles before, had been wounded before, had lost his father to war and soon after, his mother. And yet, he hadn't felt this lost in his life. The grief threatened to stop his heart, he didn't know how he would survive this one.
At first, he wouldn't leave Alexa's room, not wanting to miss her return. Then, his brother had dragged him away. The anger came next, anger directed at a certain Jedi Master who had given him hope. Anger that had led to another one-sided screaming match when he had found Ki-Adi Mundi washing the blood from her body.
— Time skip: An hour earlier —
The Jedi Master had stopped his administrations and let Dwalin scream at him until his voice was raw. Then, squeezing the wet rag he held, wrung out the blood in a pail of water long stained red and dipped the rag into a clean pail of water.
Dwalin inhaled deeply and glanced around the small room. His eyes went from the woman to the bedside table where some parchment sat, then to the side of the bed where her clothes lay, discarded.
During this, Ki-Adi Mundi had gone back to cleaning his adopted daughters' body, making sure to be extra gentle over the burns. "So, you care for my Lexi" he said, causing Dwalin's eyes to snap to him.
"O'Course I care," he grunted, glaring at the late Jedi Master.
Ki-Adi Mundi didn't reply to the Dwarf, which after some long tense seconds began to irk said Dwarf. "Not tha' tis any of yer business," Dwalin sneered and once again was met with silence. "Mahal, I bet yer wouldn't even let her be with me if she lived." He spat, "Jedi code 'n all."
At that, Ki-Adi Mundi paused. He stopped cleaning Alexa's body and placed the bloodied rag beside her. The Jedi's eyes flickered from the woman to the parchment he had given her. "Do not speak as if you know me Dwarf," he muttered.
He then rose to his full height and turned to face Dwalin. "It is not easy being a Jedi. We must be compassionate towards others and are encouraged to love but we were not allowed to have personal attachments. Grand Master Yoda stressed that attachment led to jealousy, greed and ultimately fear of loss, all of which were paths to the dark side."
"I know." Dwalin replied gruffly.
"No! You do not know; you can only imagine." Ki-Adi Mundi loudly stated, "I was part of a dying species, so the council allowed me to have relationships so my species could live on. In doing so, despite the approval of the council, I broke the code and so did Lexi."
Dwalin clenched his fists and his eyes fell to Alexa's body. "'Cause she loved me?" He asked.
Ki-Adi Mundi's eyes almost held regret for what he was about to say. "Yes, but you were not the first."
Dwalin snapped his head up at the words and a lump formed in his throat. "Wha' do yer mean?" He asked, staring at the Jedi Master.
Ki-Adi Mundi broke eye contact first. "It is not my place," he replied, then turned and picked up the bloodied rag and continued to wash Alexa.
Dwalin was at a loss for words. Running his hand down his face, he gritted his teeth and with one last look at Alexa's body, he left.
Ki-Adi Mundi sighed and rinsed the rag then squeezed all the water out. "You can come out now."
Bilbo bashfully stepped into the room. "How long did you-" He began.
"Since you arrived," Ki-Adi Mundi interrupted. "Jedi remember?"
"Right." Bilbo sighed, then approached Alexa.
A silence overcame the pair as Bilbo quietly watched the Jedi Master clean Alexa's wounds. "She told you, didn't she?" Ki-Adi Mundi asked Bilbo, making the Hobbit sigh. "Yes, she did."
Bilbo's eyes ran over the parchment next to him, his curiosity making him pick up the single folded piece next to the stack of bound parchment. Carefully, Bilbo unfolded the parchment. A drawing of Alexa on a bench with a man filled his vision causing a sad smile to form. "This is him, the man she loved. Obi-Wan." Bilbo said, not as a question but as a statement.
"Yes," Ki-Adi Mundi replied, pausing his ministrations briefly to look at Bilbo. "And he is alive."
Bilbo averted his gaze from the drawing to Ki-Adi Mundi, but no words came out as he didn't know what to say. So, Ki-Adi Mundi did. "I sense, the reason Alexa has not awoken is because she is with him." He remarked. The thought had crossed his mind and it would explain how her force signature felt. His Lexi and Master Kenobi had been spiritually bound after all.
"Ho-How is…" Bilbo stuttered,
"I don't know. The force is- "
"A mysterious thing," Bilbo finished, repeating the words Alexa had once told him.
"Yes, it is."
ALEXA'S POV
A groan escaped Alexa as she shifted. Her tongue ran over her chapped lips, wetting them. Opening her eyes, Alexa glanced at her surroundings. Moving her legs, she shifted her body to the edge of the bed with a hiss. Through the darkness she looked down at her legs, a thick curved scar ran along her right thigh. Releasing a sigh, Alexa propped herself up and lowered herself to the floor. The cold stone sent a shiver through Alexa and she squinted through the darkness to find her clothes.
Finding them on the floor next to the bed, Alexa tried to walk to them but her leg gave out. Alexa closed her eyes and gritted her teeth, waiting for impact but it never came. The arm that had wrapped around her waist remained firm and she felt herself being lifted into the air. Opening her eyes, a sigh of relief left her as she stared into the eyes of her late Master.
Ki-Adi Mundi smiled down at his old padawan and offered his hand for her to take. Returning his smile, Alexa grabbed his hand and allowed him to help her sit down on the bed. Without a word, Ki-Adi Mundi grabbed her discarded clothes and placed them on the bed before picking up her tunic. For the next few minutes, Ki-Adi Mundi helped Alexa back into her clothes like he used to when she was a child.
"Thank you Master," Alexa murmured, breaking the silence between them.
Ki-Adi Mundi nodded in reply then held out a wooden cane Alexa had not seen before. "Until you've recovered," he said, a smile twitching at his lips as he took in her reaction.
Alexa took the cane and felt the handle in her hand, then holding it tightly in her right hand, pressed it firmly into the stone floor below her feet and stood. Slowly, Alexa limped a few steps then turned around to face her Master. Hunching forwards, Alexa gripped the cane tightly, with both hands resting on the handle. "Hmmmmm, use this cane I must. Help me walk it will." She said in a gravelly voice, doing what she thought was a good impersonation of Master Yoda.
Ki-Adi Mundi chuckled at her antics, causing Alexa to giggle. This lasted for about half a minute before the pair ceased their sniggering and looked at each other fondly. Hobbling over to her master, she embraced him tightly.
"How was it?" He asked,
Alexa sighed softly as she reminisced about her time with Obi-Wan. "It was wonderful," she replied, tears forming in her eyes as she thought about it, but they did not fall.
Ki-Adi Mundi released his hold on her and pulled back to look at her face. "I'm glad." He replied, his hand stroked the side of her face.
"Now come on, your friends are waiting for you. As well as a certain Dwarf." He teased, causing Alexa to blush.
"You never cease to amaze me Master," she said, a sarcastic tint in her tone.
"Nor do I," he replied, causing Alexa to laugh again.
Alexa hobbled down the hallway alone, her knuckles were white as she gripped the handle of the walking stick. Her Master had disappeared soon after they had left the room she had been in, with a promise to come back soon. Hearing distant voices, she limped towards the entrance to the Gallery of the Kings.
Men, Dwarves and Elves alike were scattered around the large room. The injured warriors and innocent bystanders were being treated by the healers. Alexa limped through the masses, ignoring the whispers that arose around her. She then heard what could only be Thorin's booming voice and shuffled between the bodies of the soldiers who had succumbed to their wounds. Following his voice, she left the Gallery of the Kings and found herself at the entrance to the throne room.
Peering inside the room, tears pricked at her eyes as she took in the group before her. Despite only seeing their backs, Alexa easily recognised Dwalin, Nori, Bofur, Bifur, Balin and the ginger who could only be Dain Ironfoot. Shifting her eyes past their backs she saw Thorin sat on the throne, Fili on his right and Kili on his left. The sight of the three alive caused the tears to fall as relief and happiness overcame her. They were all okay.
Stepping forward, she strikes the walking stick into the stone floor below and hobbled into the room. Breathing softly, she slowly moved towards the group who had continued to talk, not noticing her presence. That was until she caught eyes with Kili. The young Dwarf's eyes widened in shock and he opened his mouth as if to say something, but nothing came out. Alexa smiled at him and raised her eyebrows then looked at Dwalin's stiff back. The others noticing Kili's gaping fish look, halted the discussion and asked the crowned prince what was wrong. Before he could reply, Thorin and Fili followed his eyes and saw Alexa.
Thorin spoke first. "By Durin," he said, slowly standing to his feet with the help of Fili.
The others then followed by example and turned to see what had startled their King and Prince's. A silence fell over the group but Alexa didn't notice, all of her attention was on her Dwarf. Time seemed to slow as Dwalin shifted and turned his head. A grin soon found its way on Alexa's lips as her eyes met Dwalin's ones. She then tapped her cane and said, "So, what does a girl have to do around here to get a drink?"
The silence that followed was quickly broken by Dain Ironfoot's laughter. The shock that had fallen over the group dissipated and they all began to laugh, a loud, heartfelt laugh. All but Dwalin. Disbelief shone in Dwalin's eyes and the stoic Dwarf looked as if he was about to fall to his knees; but he didn't. With heavy steps that quickly turned into a run, he hurried towards Alexa and took her into his arms; claiming her lips.
With the one hand gripping the walking stick, her other grasped Dwalin's tunic tightly. Dwalin held her face in his hands as they kissed. Cheers erupted around them, but the pair paid no mind to that. Dwalin soon pulled away and rested his forehead on hers.
"Don't do tha' again lass," he choked, voice full of emotion.
Alexa nodded in reply and kissed his lips again. Her chapped lips moulded against his as they poured their love for each other into the kiss. Pulling away, Alexa breathed in deeply, letting the oxygen back into her lungs.
"Well, that was overdue." A gruff voice said, promoting more laughter. Alexa snapped her head towards the voice, her eyes widened considerably as she stared at Bifur who winked at her. A wide smile split on her face and Alexa laughed, a deep belly laugh with Dwalin and the others.
Shortly after their catch-up, Thorin had ordered for the rest of the company to join them. The joy and love Alexa felt when reuniting with her found family was overwhelming and despite knowing before, this only solidified the fact that she had made the right choice.
