The rest of the day carried on without incidents. After the due, introductions were made among the group. The members of the club got on to working a little more on the building itself. Tetsuo, Yamada and the rest of the gang did prove themselves to be a useful asset as they managed to carry out heavier tasks without much of an issue; apart from some initial complaining from the members who were forced to tag along with 'their boss'. Yet, the club did actually look like it was starting to take shape.
Once the activities were over for the day, one of the groups that was already formed within the club, consisting of Van, Haruko, Chiaki, Saori, and Koji; Were heading out of the school premises.
"So tomorrow, that's how is it going to be, eh?" Haruko asked, looking at those around her. "Takato and Tetsuo are going to face off?"
"At least that's what Takato said, yeah." Koji said, then turning his attention to Van, "So you faced him already, Van?"
"So you've beaten him already?" Chiaki asked, adding up to Koji's original question.
Van shrugged and answered to their questions, "Yep, it was a bit of a complicated thing. But we didn't get to end the duel." Then after a brief moment, he would wink at the rest of his friends doing a 'V' sign with his fingers and adding "I would have won though, no question!" with a smirk on his face.
While most of the group simply smiled and followed the boy's display of confidence, it was Haruko who just looked at him putting a bit, flustered by that irritating easygoing attitude. However, she couldn't just forget how that duel was going. To her, Van was trapped, but he wasn't giving in. In fact, it looked like he was getting ready to gain momentum and start hitting Tetsuo back.
She wondered, however, if he was just bluffing. Or if he seriously had a plan for that duel.
"Hey Haruko, since you were there during the duel as well. What are your thoughts about Tetsuo's skills and his deck?" To that question, a second one was soon added. "Do you think he could be a reliable member of the club?"
"Well…" She brought a finger to her lips, thinking. "If we talk about her skills and deck alone. Then yes, he is a strong duelist. He runs does run a beat down deck of beast cards, which is oddly flexible."
"Yeah, that was rather surprising for a moment. But if I have to be honest? I'm more curious about Takato. We have no clue about his skills as a duelist and what not." Van added his thoughts on the matter in question.
"I bet it must be a strong deck, after all he was accepted as the Dueling Club president, wasn't he?" Koji asked confidently, before his attention was caught by Chiaki's finger wiggling and her tongue clicking.
"Nope! Not necessarily. Think about it, he is doing the deeds of that of a manager of sorts and a coach. He doesn't necessarily have to be the strongest duelist among us." The girl then shrugged at him with a disappointed expression. "So long he is known to be applied, organized, and is well versed in how the game works… that should be enough for a student to become the Club's president."
After thinking about that for a bit, Koji frowned, commenting "Jeez, imagine having to manage the entire club by yourself…"
"Yes… it's no wonder he asked for our help, don't you agree?" Haruko asked, having thought about it and worrying a bit about the chances of too many tasks being put on their friend's shoulders.
Van adjusted the bag over his shoulder as they crossed the gates, stopping by the car that was waiting for Haruko, "When you put it like that, then yeah… it's no wonder. So, are we meeting here tomorrow?"
Both Saori and Haruko nodded with each replying
"Sure."
"That works for me."
Then, they would wave and bid their farewells for the day as Saori headed to her bus stop. Haruko got in her driver's car while Van, Chiaki, and Koji headed over to the train station. With all of them heading back to their homes.
At the apartment building, Van was walking up the steps before he was met by his uncle.
"Ah there you are kid, you're late, what's the matter? Not getting in any trouble, right? Remember that I'm keeping my eyes on you…" Daichi asked, narrowing his eyes as he asked the latter question.
Van just rolled his eyes and replied, "The dueling club, uncle… the dueling club. I'm a member and, of course, I'm going to leave school later…"
Daichi scratched his head, "Ah, right, right… I think you mentioned that to me before. And how is that going?"
The boy shrugged, "Eh, we are just getting started. But it looks interesting so far."
"Hmm…" Daichi then nodded a couple of times at him and asked, "So, I'm feeling like ordering food tonight. Want to join me during dinner?"
"Sure!" The boy replied, showing a small smile, "I'll see you later then." And right after that, the boy hurried to his apartment, so he could get changed, take a shower and relax for a while.
After getting a time to drop on his bed, he started to think over about the things that have been going on the last couple of days. His duel with Tetsuo, and how thanks through him, it appears that everything is cool and settled between Yamada and himself.
"A challenge… hm, so that's what drives him, challenges." Then he stopped for a second, and the memory of how Tetsuo instantly switched his decision to join over the presence of Saori made him roll his eyes and sigh. Blowing some hair off his face.
Eventually, his memories brought him back to that moment. That single moment during his duel with Tetsuo… when, for anyone who was not taking part of it; it appeared as if he was going to lose. Van closed his eyes and tried to shake off that thought for a moment, and maybe distract himself with both his cellphone and checking the cards of his deck.
However, he couldn't help it. His mind would come back to that moment, that particular moment when his eyes glanced at Haruko. Seeing her on her knees and what appeared to be on the verge of crying… it infuriated him. But he clicked his tongue, he didn't understand what made him so mad at that moment.
Perhaps her lack of trust in him? It could be a reason… The duel was not over, but she was already on the verge of giving up.
"No… It doesn't add up…" Muttered to himself, since the memory of both of them in the infirmary came back to his mind. And he remembered when they were both at the infirmary, and how she said he had earned enough of her trust to let her fight her fights side by side.
Van did manage to distract himself from that thought when another one came into his mind, it was related to her again, yes. But this time around it was when he saw her dueling. How confident, dominant… almost imposing she looked. How he envied her, and still does, since somehow all those sensations; that aura around her felt… honest, it wasn't as if she was trying to put that up as an act or a facade. It felt like a force of nature that did not cease until her duel ended. That stuck with him since then.
Hours later, he joined with his uncle for dinner. Turns out he had simply ordered pizza, a classic that just couldn't go wrong. Although, of course, in Japan, it wasn't the same deal as in Europe. They had, as they did with everything, to give it their twist. Yet, the food wasn't bad, Van could even tell it tasted a bit better, less artificial in and of itself.
While munching on one of the slices, he looked at Daichi, and asked "So-mhm… I-hm, never exactly asked you…"
His uncle then taped his hand on the table, hard and repeatedly, "Jeez, chew and swallow first, chew and swallow!" As he was clearly bothered by Van trying to talk with his mouth full.
The boy then hurried with his food, annoying his uncle a bit further by the manners he was showing, and then asked, "… what do you exactly do in here?" While pointing upwards with one of his fingers and then drawing invisible rings in the air with it, hinting that he meant the whole apartment building.
Daichi shrugged while taking a sip of his can of beer. Then replied, "Eh, the usual. Maintenance, if something breaks in the building, I need to fix it myself OR get somebody to fix it." Then he picked another slice of pizza, stating, "But I choose to do most things myself. Specially if it's about electronics."
"Oh, you know how to deal with those?" The boy asked.
"I always had a knack for stuff related to electricity. So, before owning this, I did electrician jobs or simply technician." Then pointed at his nephew. "Now tell me about you boy, how's school going so far?"
"Can't complain" The teen replied with his shoulders lifted in a shrug, "I don't think one of my teaches is particularly fond of me though…"
"What did you do…" He asked with his eyes narrowed, looking at Van inquisitively.
"Hey, hey, nothing!" He exclaimed, raising his hands, "Just… had my glasses on during the day of the ceremony."
"You can be such a bonehead at times…" then sighed, "But, at least you seem to be doing okay besides that. Right?"
He would take a sip of his glass of water and nod, "Yep, nothing really going on."
Daichi then stayed silent for a second and responded, "Right…. so… uh, anything you feel like talking about?"
Van felt that something was strange but simply replied, "Uh… yeah, something wrong?" while raising an eyebrow at his uncle.
Daichi then raised his hands stating "Uh, no, no! I'm just checkin' that's all." However, that was a poor choice of words from him.
"Just checking…?" Then blinked and lifted his eyebrows, "Wait a second… 'feel like talking' ?" Then Van narrowed his eyes looking at Daichi and planted his palms on the table, "When…"
"Uh, when what?" Daichi asked, getting a bit nervous about Van's suspicions of him.
"Come on, when did you speak with my mother about 'that'" He would then stand up from his chair and point at Daichi. "Was it before or after I came here!?" as he began to raise his voice tone.
"Hey, hey relax!" The man exclaimed back at him, raising his hands and trying to deescalate the situation. "Look, not only her, but your dad's worried too. I'm just checking on you because I'm the person responsible for your well-being while you are here. If something happens to you, I'm the man who has to show his face to your parents afterward."
Van shook his head and sighed and then pressed his lips. Nodding to himself as he was annoyed at his parents getting Daichi involved in this personal matter. "Look… I'm fine, alright? I just want my space, and you actually were doing great until now!" He'd pause, deciding to try to calm himself down for a moment and then add "Look, I know you've got the best intentions, but I'm fine… seriously."
Daichi responded, "I mean, I trust you, sure. To be honest, I was weirded out by all this because… well, I do see you fine." Then shrugged, "At least to me, you seem OK."
"Uhuh…" Upon hearing his words, the boy calmed down further, "Well… you are right!" His expression changed to one of confidence, although no less nervous. Then he sighed, "But… do you mean if I go back to my apartment?"
Daichi nods and gets up, "Sure, sure. Just one thing before you go!" he responded as if he was almost forgetting about something. Catching the attention of his nephew. He walked up to him and then.
CHOP
One of the man's deadly karate chops connected directly with the boy's head, "Who you think you are talking to me like that, I'm your uncle, damn it!". The man angrily exclaimed, while Van grunted and whined in pain. Although thereafter, at the end, his uncle let him go after just scolding him a bit more.
The rest of the night went rather calm, but with plenty of thoughts running through Van's mind that, as usual, kept him awake for a while until he finally fell asleep.
On the next day, he met with Koji and Chiaki at the train station and all of them together headed to the school's gate, so they could later on wait and be joined by Haruko, Saori, Rika and Sayuri.
"How are you girls doing?" Koji asked while smiling at them.
"Not so well…" Sayuri commented before adding "I forgot to do my Math homework, the teacher is going to eat me alive…" With a defeated tone.
"I reminded you about it, and you still forgot, it's simply your fault for always slacking off!" Rika reprimanded her friend.
"Aww… this is not fair." Then Sayuri looked at Saori showing her best puppy eyes, "Saori, could you help me finish it before class PRETTY PLEASE!"
Saori just gave an embarrassed smile and nodded at her, while Rika and Haruko looked at Sayuri with disappointment. Both of them thinking, "She will never learn…"
"Oh by the way, are you girls going to watch the Dueling Club today? Haruko asked both Rika and Sayuri.
"Oh I will, I want to see Saori dueling!" Sayuri said while holding her friend by her shoulders, making her a bit nervous.
"What about you, Rika?" The Kaiba step-sibling asked.
The girl crossed her arms and closed her eyes, thinking for a bit, "I don't think so… I can't see myself getting that invested in watching any more duels than I've already watched."
"Oh… I see…" Haruko then replied, showing a bit of disappointment, albeit still respecting her friend's decision. She knew Rika was not really interested in dueling, and likely won't ever be.
"Oh, Isn't Tetsuo dueling today in the club?" Van asked a bit loudly deliberately, to both Koji and Chiaki, so then the rest of the girls could hear them as well.
Chiaki and Koji caught up quickly on what he was doing, and the trio of smug teens started replying to each other.
"Oh yes, yes. Do you remember who was he dueling?" Chiaki asked, with finally Koji replying.
"Oooh that's right…" Then Koji would pause for a moment and emphasize his whisper, spelling the name slowly, "right guys?"
Rika's eyes widened and looked over her shoulder. Noticing the trio looking at her, smiling devilishly at her, as she had now realized they were teasing. "Y-You bastards…!" Crossed Rika's mind before pressing her eyes and her hands on her cheeks. Given that she couldn't resist the temptation of watching Takato in action, she just tried to play it cool.
"You know… on second thought… I think I may go, yes." Then nodded to herself a couple of times while her face was still red from the teasing.
"Uhuh…" Haruko replied, looking at her friend with her eyes narrowed, then looking over at the trio behind her, who were now giving her a thumbs up. "I don't even…. ugh…."
The activities at school carried on normally. Saori managing to miraculously help Sayuri get her math homework done in time, and avoiding what would have probably been a rather entertaining sight. When the terms were over, the whole group started heading to the old gymnasium.
Midway to the Gymnasium, the group would come across another.
"Yo!" The voice of Tetsuo called, as he came along with the rest of his gang.
"W-wait, these guys!?" Rika asked, startled by their presence.
"Relax! They are cool, just relax." Van commented to Rika while Haruko and Saori held her, nodding at their friend, backing Van's statement. Then Van approached Tetsuo, "Hey guys, ready for your duel today?"
Tetsuo would flex one of his arms, "You bet!" With the rest of his gang cheering at him
"If we will be forced to join this club, then we may as well be the ones to set the standards!" Yamada stated, frowning at the rest of the group.
"You mean Tetsuo will set the standards?" Haruko asked Yamada with a smug on her face.
"What did you say!?" he exclaimed with the rest of the gang holding him, as they knew they would get in trouble if they started trouble in the middle of the academy.
"Hahaha, spirits are high, that's good, let's head in. I don't want to make this duel wait any longer!"
The group then headed in. Everyone except Sayuri and Rika headed over to the court, which now the club started to call the 'Dueling Court'. They noticed a couple of tables being lined up across said court. Takato could be seen also placing some cones in a long square pattern, apparently trying to set the space for both of them to have their duel.
Tetsuo walked up to him.
"I suppose we make do, right?" As he noticed how he was trying to make the boundaries of their dueling 'arena'.
"You could say so. Those tables were at the back of the stage, and these cones, I was allowed to borrow them from the Basketball club." *Takato responded while looking at Tetsuo, hands on his waist. "Now, do I need to remind you about the arrangements we made for this duel, right? If you win, you won't have to do any teaching or guiding to the new duelists of the club. But if you lose, you respect the club rules and my calls to the letter."
Tetsuo then stood on one of the sides of the improvised arena boundaries and then gave Takato a formal salute "Sir, yes sir" exclaimed, exclaiming with confidence and activating his duel disk. "Let's get this started then!"
Takato closed his eyes and sighed, then clapped his hands a couple of times. "Alright, everyone, we will have a bit of a demonstration duel. The goal of this will be to show you the level of skill you could reach, and still have plenty of room for further growth!"
The members of the club began taking their places and the observers as well.
"Alright, let's see how this goes. Never seen anybody apart from Koji, Haruko and Van dueling." Sayuri commented before looking over to Rika, "Are you sure you want to wat-…" she was ready to ask before she noticed her friend.
She had her eyes focused on the duel, both hands held together under her chin and muttering "Come on Takato-kun!"
"Ahh… right…" Sayuri thought, staring at her with her eyes narrowed.
Takato would then activate his duel disk, with both of them now detecting each other and synchronizing.
"Detecting Activation of Duel Disk Battle System."
Both disks would begin creating the virtual field where the duel will take place. Both duelists looked at each other. Takato with a focused, determined expression on his face, while Tetsuo with his characteristic, confident smirk.
The gang leader looked at his initial hand, "Oh yes! Crimson Ape on the draw hand, this is gonna go well." "Alright, I'll go first if you don't mind!"
TURN 1
Tetsuo 4000 LP – Takato 4000 LP
"Draw!" Takato looked at the card he drew, "Excellent, I'll summon The Trojan Horse in attack position, and set a card. That would be it for my turn!" Tetsuo kept his smirk on his face.
The Trojan Horse ATK 1600/1200 DEF
"Even if you destroy that monster, I'll be able to bring the monster back and use it to summon my Crimson Ape." Crossed his mind
"Draw!" Takato looked at his hand and then looked at the rest of those present. "Now, I want you all to pay attention to this, understood?" in a firm, loud voice. Drawing more the attention of the rookies from the club, and the surprise of the already experienced duelists.
"Wait, what is…?" Chiaki muttered, confused.
Haruko shared that confusion, wondering, "Is… is he implying he is -literally- using Tetsuo and this duel as a demonstration?"
Van remained quiet, his eyes narrowed, paying attention to whatever Takato was planning to do, and also how his confidence did get to Tetsuo as well, with his confident smirk switched to a questioning expression, mixed with anger. He clearly felt insulted by his confidence.
Takato then took a card from his card and declared, "Now, I will normally summon Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Dragon to the field!"
With that, the virtual projection of his card showed up on the field and was then engulfed by flames.
"It's – It's burning!" Rika exclaimed surprised from her spot.
The flames then began moving and taking the shapes of … snakes? No! Dragons! They shape of small dragons, more similar to those of Chinese styled pictures and art. From the flames, the silhouette of a person would form… and there it was. A man with long, black hair. Wearing a green, ancient, Chinese styled armor. Wielding what it seemed to be a flaming staff with a hanzi symbol.
Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Dragon ATK 1800/300 DEF
Then he placed a card in the spell/trap card slot, "Now I'll activate Fire Formation - Tenki. And with its effect, I can add a level four Beast-Warrior type monster from my deck to my hand. Furthermore, It will give Dragon a slight boost of 100 attack points!" And thus, he searched for said card in his deck before finally shuffling it again.
Stats Modification
Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Dragon ATK 1800 → 1900
As he did so, the virtual projection of his spell card formed on the field. It showed a picture of two soldiers donning armor of a similar style to that of his current Fire Fist monster. In an environment and background engulfed in flames.
Takato then declared "At the same time, since I played a Fire Formation card, the effect of one of the monsters from my hand is triggered, thus allowing me to special summon Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Panda to the field!"
This time, a new monster card would form on the field. Just like it happened with the first one, it would be engulfed in flames, but unlike Dragon, in which the flames were on that typical color approaching to orange. The flames of this monster were dark blue. The flames took the shape of a giant panda and another Hanzi symbol. And then they gave shape to a warrior wearing a dark and orange armor, with a confident smirk on his face that reflected that of Tetsuo's, armed with a Chinese styled sword.
Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Panda ATK 2100/400 DEF
"1900 and 2100 on the first turn…" Haruko mutters, observing Takato's movements
"Yes… Tetsuo is in big trouble." Chiaki commented, drawing the attention of both Haruko and Koji, "It's not just that he brought a strong monster on turn one… it's about the deck he is running."
Tetsuo started to look a bit nervous, although excited that it appeared Takato was actually a strong opponent, and he cannot wait for him to end his turn and give him a chance to bring his heavy hitter monsters to the field.
"That's not all!" Takato declared, shocking almost everyone there. Not just his opponents, but all observers that were present.
"he is not done?!" Koji exclaimed.
"I play Fire Formation Tensu. This will also increase my monster's attack points by 100, but the main effect of this spell card is to allow me to have an extra normal summon, and with it, I will bring Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Bear to the field!"
The new spell card that was projected through the solid system of the duel disk showed a card with an art that depicted two warriors under a red moon, slashing the air with their blades above what seemed to be red flames or a red mist. The monster in question, this time around, appeared engulfed in crimson red flames, which took the shape of a bear. Another Hanzi symbol appeared before a muscular warrior donning a black and red armor showed up, armed with a Chinese sabre.
Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Bear ATK 1600/1200 DEF
"And I'll immediately play his effect!" Takato said, with the warrior now reaching to grab the grip of his sabre as flames seemed to be building up inside the sheath. "By sending one fire formation card from my field to the graveyard, I can pick a monster on your side of the field and destroy it!".
Takato then pulled Tensu away from the field and sent it to the graveyard, Bear then unleashed its sabre, sending a burning slash towards Tetsuo's Trojan Horse, destroying it.
"Damn it!" Tetsuo exclaimed as the horse exploded and lifted a dust cloud around him, "I can bring him back with my trap…" He thought as he looked at the card he had set, 'Battle Instinct' "But the combined attack of those three monsters… he…!" his eyes widened at the realization.
"Wait, is he allowed to summon so many times in a single turn?" Saori, who was also watching along with the rest of the club members, asked.
"Yep…" Van replied to her, before adding, "So long you've got the cards that allow you to do so, you can continuously summon." Saori nodded slightly at him and then focused back on the duel, trying to catch and learn as much as she could from it.
"Let's go Takato!" Rika cheered along with Sayuri when they saw that he was clearly dominating the duel.
"That's not just a deck following a well craft, and put together theme that works very well in action. No…" Chiaki stated before adding, "That's a specific archetype. 'Fire Fist' Archetype."
"Fire Fist?" Koji asked, while also Haruko paid attention to what she had to say.
Chiaki nodded, "Yes, it's a type of deck that focuses on swarming and triggering effects through activating, discarding or banishing either monsters or spell and trap cards with specific names. Like 'Fire Formation' named cards…"
While his friends and some members of the club listened to what Chiaki was talking about, Van just observed Takato in silence, a serious and focused expression displayed on his face.
Takato, finally, pointed at Tetsuo "Now, Battle phase!" declared before commanding "My warriors, attack and clean Tetsuo's lifepoints, bring this duel to an end!"
And thus, the warriors advanced, unleashing one slash, each, followed by a trail of flames. An orange flame, a dark blue flame and a crimson red flame.
"No, damn it!" Tetsuo exclaimed as his lifepoints would drop directly to zero.
Damage Calculation
Tetsuo 4000 LP → 0 LP
Duel END
Tetsuo 0 LP – Takato 4000 LP
And that was it, almost everyone, specially the members of his gang, were in shock. They couldn't believe how swiftly the duel had gone, the vast difference in skill between both duelists. Tetsuo dropped on his knees and slammed his fist on the ground, still in disbelief that he couldn't do anything against his opponent.
"It's… over already!?" Haruko exclaimed in surprise. Tetsuo was no Yamada, she saw him facing Van, she knew he was a strong duelist… and yet, he was defeated so easily.
"One turn kill, eh…?" Van thought while looking at Takato, who now looking at them.
"Alright, that would be the end of the demonstration. What we will work in this club, is for you to reach to this level as a duelist, and even higher. You will learn about rulings, erratas, common strategies, and deck building!" Takato announced to the rest of the club. Then added "Those who are already experienced will help you on this journey, our goal will be growth and the tittle of the competitions we will face ahead!".
Finally, he walked over to Tetsuo, "Are you alright, Tetsuo?"
Tetsuo still had his head hanging down, making the members of his gang worried about a moment that perhaps… just perhaps, he was mad about losing.
"Hehehe… so that's the skill of the club president." The boy on the ground replied. Then he looked up at him, with a confident grin on his face, "Let me get stronger and give me another shot at a duel. Until then, you won't hear a beep from me, no matter how much of a pain in the ass teaching those rookies might be!"
Takato then smiled at Tetsuo. Perhaps he was driven for reasons that he did not share, and he didn't find pleasure in fighting like he did. But in a strange way, he had a good sense of sportsmanship, perhaps it was a form of honor derivate from respect to those who best him? He wasn't sure. But he now knew that it was going to be strong enough to make Tetsuo a reliable person in the club, even if it was a selfish reason, he was going to cooperate.
The Club President offered his hand to help him up, and his opponent accepted, shaking hands in a firm grip.
"All already said aside, Van might not be wrong after all… perhaps hanging around this club will be fun and rewarding for me." When the handshake broke, he turned to his gang and pointed towards the rest of the club members, who were gathered and watching them duel. "Alright boys move your butts and line up, we are just getting started here today, come on!"
"Y-yes boss!" the gang members exclaimed, except Yamada, who, yes, did cooperate and move along the others. However, he remained quiet, thinking about the duel he saw and the difference of skill between Takato and Tetsuo. The latter being the strongest duelist he personally knew, so far. And still, was outplayed so easily.
"That was…" Rika thought, as she watched what happened, impressed. But also slightly confused by the outcome.
"Curious guy, right? He looks a lot more fired up even after losing." Sayuri asked
"Yes… I wonder…" said, thinking things through in silence, starting to wonder about both this game and the club.
Moments later, Takato pointed at the tables and the members of the club began lining them up more accordingly, having them spread, so the different members could stand by them spread in different groups. Takato left to another room for a couple of minutes along with Tetsuo, then both came back, with Tetsuo rolling a whiteboard to the court and Takato bringing several boxes with the duel monster designs and logos on it.
"Alright, shall we finally get started?" Takato asked with a big smile on his face.
"Yes, sir!" the club responded in unison.
