Adventures in magic
The next morning
After the binding ritual, I was back with my grandmother at the Chamberlain mansion in the valley. My grandma was particularly disappointed in me joining the coven performing a potentially dangerous incarnation.
"Cassie don't do that to me again. I was afraid you would be hurt badly," said Jane.
"Grandma, I can take care of myself now. I'm sixteen years old," I replied.
"But that was when you were back on Earth. Who knows what dangers lurk in this realm?"
I sighed but realised my grandmother was right. "So grandma, can I go to Hexside school and develop my magic skills now I am a full-fledged witch?" I ask her.
"No Cassie, it is best if you stay here with me. I can teach you magic, and I don't want you hanging around the coven again."
"But what about my friends, I don't have any in this realm."
My grandmother was getting frustrated, and I realised I had agitated her. After a few minutes, she calmed down and responded "Ok fine Cassie, you can come with me into town on the rare occasions I need to get supplies. But I want you to stay close to me."
I accepted my grandmother's proposal and relaxed in the living room. Shortly afterwards, there was a knock on the door and my grandmother answered. It was Dawn and her daughter Faye.
"Not you two again," moaned Jane. "Why must you always come back here and disrupt my routine?"
"We're here for Cassie," said Dawn.
"You need to leave. NOW!" shouted Jane.
"And why would we do that?" asked Faye. "Besides Cassie was the one who encouraged me to perform the binding ritual."
I heard Faye's comment and became tense.
"Cassie, is that true?" Jane asked me.
"Yes grandmother, I found my family's grimoire upstairs and thought the binding ritual would help the coven. Because Faye and I encountered difficulties when practicing magic."
"Oh Cassie, next time please let me know if you and the coven plan to do any rituals or enchantments."
"So, are we still in trouble?" asked Dawn. "Because Faye suggested that Cassie attend Hexside school, and to pass the entrance exam Cassie will need to master at least two basic spells."
"Just hold on a minute," replied Jane as she turned to me. "Cassie, are you sure you trust Faye and her mom? Because I don't want to put you in any more danger."
"Grandma, its fine. Faye accepts me as part of the coven now and I'm sure I can help persuade her mom to change too," I answered.
"I'm still not sure," said Jane. "By the way, where are you planning to take Cassie?"
"We were thinking of the Frozen Wastes, the vast expanse has slither beasts and is perfect for mastering more challenging spells," replied Faye.
"No way. That place is full of danger. Why don't you try nearby Lake Glanville, its only a short walk from here."
"Ugh, fine. As you please," answered Faye.
Dawn left her palisman Owlbert in the care of my grandmother, and the three of us set out for the lake.
At Lake Glanville
Faye found a wet leaf, and began a demonstration "Now Cassie, I will show you a spell to dry this leaf. Watch as I use my 2nd and 3rd fingers, first to circle the leaf and focus on the water. Then I will flick my whole hand upwards to force the water droplets off the leaf."
Faye completed the demonstration, as then passed another leaf for me to try. "Go on Cassie," she gestured to me.
I attempted to follow Faye's instructions, and I managed to get the water droplets off the leaf. But my spell was a bit too powerful, and I managed to flick the water onto Faye instead.
"Ugh, did you have to that Cassie?" said Faye.
"Sorry, my bad." I replied.
"Why don't I give you my wand. It might help control any excess magical energy," Faye suggested.
"Yeah sure," I answered as Faye gave me her wand.
"Now try again," said Faye as she handed me another wet leaf.
I repeated the same spell, this time using Faye's wand and the water droplets were flicked off the leaf and fell onto the ground.
"Good work Cassie," encouraged Faye. "Now, shall we try to create a waterspout?"
"How do we do that?" I ask her.
"This time I will need the wand, and it involves creating multiple circles. As if you are forming a vortex in the air. Whilst concentrating on the lake surface, the motion should trigger the water to rise up."
I gave the wand to Faye, and she demonstrated the spell to me.
"Now this one might be a bit difficult for you Cassie, so I will help you." Faye informed me.
I held the wand in my right hand, whilst Faye stood next to me and gently rested her hand on my right arm. Soon the two of us were casting the spell together and it generated a waterspout.
"This is cool. My grandma would be so proud of me," I said. I could see Faye blushing, and she responded "Oh, its nothing."
After that session, the two of us met up with Dawn back at the Chamberlain mansion.
"So girls, how was your adventure together?" asked Dawn.
"Oh mom, Cassie and I had a lot of fun and I think Cassie is ready to start the next step of her magic training at Hexside," replied Faye.
