Chapter 64 Catching up
"I would say welcome to Haven, but thankfully I'm off work, and the Headmaster is too busy hiding somewhere, being scared of everything. The students are also away in this school section, so don't worry about being seen. As for security, don't worry about those either," Black Widow, current persona Kushina, strode to the door leading to the hallway. "I already hacked into the security, and all the cameras are in a five-second loop."
Walking out first, the Avengers looked at each other at how quickly her introduction came and went. The one to follow her was Raven; soon, the other three heroes followed suit. It didn't take long for them to catch up to the S.H.I.E.L.D spy, and while it did feel weird to walk around in the open, it soon didn't bother them as there was no alarm being set off with their presence.
"Iron Man," Despite his spider-sense not being set off, the teenage vigilante didn't want to take any chances. "Is V.I.K...?"
"Already in the school's system long before Foxy Red left the door. She is right; V.I.K combed the security, which is indeed hacked and showing a loop. Also decided to have him try his hand at hacking a teacher's personal computer, and he sent me a schedule. Sending it to you now."
Thanks to the assistance of using Whitley's generous donation of Lien and using it to upgrade his attire with better equipment to make his new upgraded costume. Spider-Man's mask had a heads-up display showing an email icon from Iron Man. The contents of the message opened, and Spider-Man saw a class schedule. The most common trait was having the seniors sent out to perform week-long missions, leaving the first-year students stranded at the school and teachers who were not combat-oriented Hunstmen to be left at Haven.
This message wasn't just sent to Spider-Man, as Wasp was also scrolling through the schedule. Spider-Man and Wasp looked at each other in worry at what they were reading, and Iron Man voiced their concerns.
"This school is dragging their seniors out to handle some missions non-stop. I'm sure you see a similarity between Vale, right?"
"The Breach," Spider-Man spoke up. "Beacon had to send many students to handle Grimm, who was too close to Vale. Yet, this data shows that the Headmaster is approving his students to go to missions that are way too far from Haven. He must be trying to send them so far away that it leaves Haven almost defenseless when Adam shows up."
"You're half right; Lionheart is making most of his students leave Haven for long durations. But it's not just leaving the school to be at half-strength. He is also trying to have them killed off too."
The Avengers, minus Raven, stopped walking as such a shocking answer froze them. Hearing fewer footsteps, Black Widow stopped and turned around.
"We are not even at our destination yet. Keep moving."
"Explain. Now." Spider-Man said in a gruff voice.
Rolling her eyes at how impatient Spider-Man was, the fox Faunus blew a strand of red hair from her eyes and talked.
"Lionheart was never one to be thoughtful of his actions. Despite the image of calm and confidence, he projects to his coworkers and students. The man is the very personification of anxiety and cowardice. Why he chose to have students take such high-risk missions is because Salem is puppeteering him."
"How long has he been in Salem's pocket?" Spider-Man asked. Rather than answering immediately, Black Widow started walking, making the others follow her.
"The answer is where I'm taking you, so walk. One of the Council members from Mistral started to see a rise in transportation use from Haven Academy far more than usual. That caused the Director to order a stationed agent to check it out. Not three days later did he receive no news, which is when Director Fury sent me to pick up the pieces. I was able to embed myself into the school, and I was able to uncover that the agent was killed."
"By lionheart?" Raven asked, no longer staying quiet. "Lionheart was always a meek person. Even during combat school, he never really had much confidence in fighting one-on-one. He prefers to fight in groups to have a higher chance of victory. Was your agent that weak?"
"Oh no, he was a veteran of his craft." Kushina laughed at the idea of Lionheart fighting and winning. "It was not Lionheart who killed him. While in the school, I discovered hidden pathways leading to the city's outskirts. One such path led me to the missing agent. His body was still intact, and when I sent the body back to Fury, the eggheads at the base said that the agent had an altercation with a Hunstmen who specializes in poison."
"Poison..." Raven wandered off and tried to think of anyone she knew who used such a method.
The spy stopped at a room, reached into her skirt pocket, and unlocked the door. Motioning her guests inside, the group saw they were now in an office with a single desk, a couch, and a small fridge.
"They speculate that the agent escaped but died soon after due to the poison in his veins. While it is indeed sad, their autopsy of the body discovered a thumb drive in his body containing some intel."
"So even in death, he was able to help Fury. Got to say, Nick sure knows how to pick'em."
Spider-Man glared underneath his mask at Raven, then looked to Kushina, who was now behind the desk.
"What was on the thumb drive?"
"It held some documents about Lionheart's dealing with Salem. The most eye-opening was when he started being Salem's double agent. Seems like he was on Salem's side, not three weeks after being trusted by Ozpin's secrets."
"Tch! I thought Lionheart's loyalty was flimsy, but knowing that he quickly turned sides is sad." Wasp looked to Raven, who had a look of rage. "Raven? You doing ok?"
"No," lying to people she had just met was useless. "Lionheart was many things, but to know how at the very beginning, he was betraying us the very start is starting to make sense. Enough with the backstory. What do you have us do to end this farce?"
Taking Raven's demands in stride, Kushina typed up something on her computer and then turned her monitor to show them something. Her screen revealed recent messages between Lionheart and someone else regarding the next phase of their plan and when they should show up.
"The best part about having a boss who is a scardey cat, no pun nor racism intended, is one who is easy to predict. The man is so scared of messing up that it was easy for me to use that to my advantage. I made myself look easy to approach that Lionheart dropped his guard and, at times, that I bugged his PC. I have the logs that have enough proof to send Lionheart to prison for life."
"Says here that they will be here tomorrow night." Spider-Man read through the latest message. "Seems like they had to change the time because our friends were able to stop Adam from killing off the leader of the White Fang."
"If you read further down, there is an attachment showing locations in the school where they can place bombs to cause the most casualties, thanks to Lionheart. Thankfully, I was able to rig some traps up, and we should also be getting some agents, thanks to Fury, to take them down. All we need to do now is wait for them to appear."
"Makes things easy. We wait, and when they think they have the upper hand, we take them down as quickly as possible—eliminating any chances of taking risks of collateral damage and civilian casualties." In appreciation for the throughout strategy, Spider-Man looked over to Iron Man and Wasp. "You guys have anything to add?"
"We can use some of my particles to shrink down small enough to surprise them. Or better yet, maybe I can shrink them instead. I don't have enough, so we must be thoughtful about using them." Wasp suggested.
"That can work, yeah! Iron Man, your thoughts?"
"I mean, it's the same thing as Beacon Academy. I'll hack into the school's security, record what the White Fang is doing and broadcast it to the city so that everyone can see how much they changed. I'll, of course, show us winning, but only us, as Fury, would not like his agents being spotted. He made it obvious he wished to keep his organization hidden from the public. Speaking about Fury, I want to know something from you, Black Widow."
"What do you want to know?"
"Oh, drop the professional act. When did you start working for Fury? You ran away the last time we met before I could catch you. Since when did you decide to go work for the government?"
"You guys know each other?" Asked Spider-Man and Wasp at the same time.
"Long story short, we met when she pretended to be an assistant to someone I know. Not just her, but she had an accomplice with her. Speaking about that, where is your backup dancer? Is he somewhere nearby? He usually isn't that useful unless he is at a distance."
"If you are talking about Clint, then you should be aware that he is the one helping your friends deal with the White Fang. It would be best if you were thankful that my 'backup dancer' was picked to assist them."
"She's right," Wasp decided to cut into the argument. "When I called Ant-Man, he told me how this archer helped them deal with the Fang."
"Clint Barton, also known as 'Hawkeye,' was another person who piqued Fury's interest and was given a choice to join or serve his time in prison." Said Black Widow.
"Fury," Iron Man shook his head. "Again, he hides things from us. I'm starting to think that working with him wasn't our best idea as a group."
"Maybe he didn't tell you because he knows how much of a control freak you can get. For goodness sake, for someone smart enough to make a suit of armor, you sure are clueless when it comes to reading people."
"Maybe so, but being a genius has benefits, like knowing that trusting you and Clint is a bad choice."
"Enough, both of you." Spider-Man stood between his friend and the scarlet spy. "Are we really going to argue, now? When we have bigger things to deal with? Seriously?"
Spider-Man looked at Iron Man, and if he didn't have his mask covering his face, he would see that Jaune was giving Whitely a look of disappointment.
"Iron Man, I don't know what you have against her, but we need you to get your head in the game. This isn't the usual stop the robber and go home routine. We need her help to save countless lives, so please keep your personal bias in check until we finish this mission."
"But Fury, he-"
"Is giving us the benefit of the doubt to help this kingdom from being destroyed. Yes, it does suck that he is willing to keep secrets from us, but are we no better? Did you already forget that we are keeping secrets from Fury too? Let's not be hypocrites and judge his actions when he is willing to work with us. May I also remind you are the leader of this team? You guys have your opinions, but you must realize that you can't bring your personal issues to the team as our leader!"
"... Your right," Iron Man clicked his tongue and looked away. "I shouldn't let my bias take control."
"Glad you're finally admitting your shortcomings." Black Widow spoke under her breath, but it seemed like Spider-Man could hear her and snapped his head at her.
"Do not think I'm siding with you!" He spoke in a stern tone. "If things weren't so dire, I would side with Iron Man and send you to prison. It isn't my right to judge Fury's choice in recruiting you and 'Pink eye'-"
"It's Hawk-"
"I don't care. What I care about is saving this kingdom. And if what Iron Man said about you is true, then I won't hesitate to take you down if you decide to pull a disappearing act. Because it's either me tying you up and shipping you behind bars or dealing with Fury. So I appreciate it if you do your job and help us rather than antagonizing my friend, got that?"
"Yes, sir," She replied with a neutral tone and started to type something up on her computer as the clicking of her keyboard filled the silence created by Spider-Man's commanding outburst.
Wasp's thoughts about seeing Spider-Man's words made her remember why he was to be taken seriously. Despite acting like a goof at times, Spider-Man had moments where he dropped the act and took control of the situation. She can also agree that having Iron Man argue with their contact is also a waste, as right now, the main priority is preventing a school from being bombed.
Raven didn't care for what she was witnessing. The little drama show between Iron Man and the fox faunus has no real impact on herself. As a matter of fact, their spouting out their history made her wonder how these people could be willing to let strangers in the vicinity listen to their personal grudges. So it was nice to see that someone with some sense decided to set things back on track.
"Lionheart should be still in his office, probably sucking up to Salem as he explains how this school is currently defenseless. Adam and the Fang will later on show up and start their rampage, resulting in a massive wave of negativity that will cause the grimm to show up and destroy this kingdom. Now, why is because of the vault underneath the school housing the Relic of Knowledge that can only be obtained by having the Fall Maiden."
"Which is Yang, who got it from Cinder." Spider-Man gasped. "Salem is trying to gain a foothold by capturing this kingdom. Since Ozpin has the key, it would make it useless by taking away the chest."
"That's what Director Fury believes as well. Meaning that Ozpin might have no choice or possibly make the bad choice of sending Hunstmen there to take it back."
"Or choose to send Yang and her team hoping to get the Relic and then leave." Iron Man brought up his opinion on the problem that can bring. "Mantle is allied with Mistral and will likely provide support, but I doubt the other kingdoms will like that. Mistral is weak, and Mantle is assisting them to uphold their old alliance. I'm sure Vale and Vacuo will have some politicians who will use that to spin a tale about how that will be dangerous."
"You think this will start a war?" Wasp asked in alarm.
"I don't think so, but you have to admit that after what we pulled back at the Vytal festival, the other kingdoms would probably wonder if they can replicate what we can do. I mean, Atlas had the most advanced army compared to the other three domains. Do you think people would not try and assume I won't be associated with them? What I'm saying is that if Salem does take a foothold on this kingdom, then that will result in misunderstandings between the other three that can result in a war."
"He isn't wrong. Fury and the other higher-ups have also thought of that scenario and would rather keep it a scenario." Pulling up another file from her computer, the spy showed it to her audience. "What I pulled up is a tracker that displays Adam's arrival. Currently, he is flying at a decent speed." They saw a red dot representing Adam, and there was another spot, this one the color blue, which looked to be behind him. "The other dot is your friends. Their ride was able to pick them up sooner than expected and are now on their way while at the same time tailing behind Adam just far enough not to be detected."
"That's good to hear," Wasp said. "I was worried that they won't be here."
"They did encounter some trouble, but the problem was resolved faster than anticipated, and now they are heading here."
"More help is a good thing." Spider-Man moved his sights away from the screen and back at Kushina. "If they are on their way, then we should use this time to set up our trap. The team is almost assembled, so let's give our unwelcome guests the red carpet. Tonight, let's end Adam and his twisted schemes once and for all."
Night had finally covered the kingdom of Mistral, and Haven Academy's halls were dead silent as most of the remaining students were asleep. The only one who seemed to be awake at this time was the Headmaster of Haven, Lionheart, a lion faunus who, despite the name, was pacing back and forth with a nervous gait.
He was currently standing at the school's main entrance and would occasionally check his scroll for the time, then continued his nervous pacing. Lionheart has gone over his head a thousand times on how tonight would play out. The Headmaster of this school has done everything he can to lower the school's security by ending his students on dangerous missions and sending a few of the first-year students who outshined their peers. Right now, the school should be weakened to where they cannot hope to prepare for what will happen. Once the White Fang arrives detonates the bombs and wreaks havoc across the academy. Then that would cause a chain reaction of the kingdom to have a massive influx of negative energy, making the Grimm frenzied.
"He should be here by now." The man said nervously. When he was going to pace around even faster, Lionheart felt a rough hand on his shoulder, making the man jolt from surprise. Lionheart was going to turn around, yet the person who placed their hand had enough strength to hold Lionheart in place.
"You need to calm down, Lionheart." Hazel emerged from the shadows showing the Headmaster his full height.
"H-hazel," Lionheart let out a breath. "I am glad you are here. But where are Adam and his soldiers?"
"They are spread out to plant the bombs and will reconvene here. I headed straight here to get a full report from you."
"Yes, I understand. Right now, the school is practically empty; the only ones even here are first-year students, so if you plan on killing them, then they should probe to be just a hindrance."
As Lionheart talked, he couldn't help but feel like Hazel was becoming angry the longer Lionheart talked. Was Hazel tired from the flight here? Either way, so long as he does what he is told, Lionheart will do whatever he can to live.
"You don't need to tell me anything else. I heard enough, so just go to your office and await further word from Mistress Salem. We'll make sure you have an alibi while the White Fang and the Grimm attack."
"I thank you for your kindness. I'll get out of-"
(THWIP!)
[FWOOO-BOOM!]
A web glob ensnared Lionheart in a cacoon, making the man fall face first. At the same time, a condensed bolt of energy went right to Hazel, but unlike the fumbling fool, Hazel could tank the hit with just his forearm. Hazel's aura briefly flickered yet was not broken from the attack, and when he checked to see Lionheart was now tied and squirming like a worm, Hazel put two and two together and realized he was caught in a trap.
"Well, taking down one of them is still a win," Spider-Man, hiding on the ceiling, dropped down and landed without a sound on all fours. "Dang, you are a whole lot of man. Wish you didn't stop at just one repulsor blast, Iron Man."
"To be fair," A loud crash from one of the windows came to Iron Man, who flew in and floated next to his friend. "I was not expecting to fight a Huntsman who is similar to 'The Mountain.'"
"Iron Man and Spider-Man," Hazel didn't sound surprised by their arrival, and if these two were here, then there was a high chance that the rest of their team would be here as well. "I applaud your ability to spring a trap when your enemy's guard is down. But do not expect me to be so easily fooled like Lionheart."
"Pft- Ha! Ha! Ahem! Sorry, I just thought of something funny." Spider-Man beat his chest and then went to his usual fighting pose.
"Wait here," Hazel told Lionheart, then pulled out dust crystals from the pouches attached to his belt. "Wouldn't want you to get hit in the crossfire."
Taking some steps away from his 'comrade,' Hazel plunged the dust crystals into his forearms, and soon his semblance activated. His already impressive height increased, followed by his body doubling his muscle. Hazel's calm and neutral face went into a feral look, making him seem like he was about to attack anyone and anything that moved. But the most prominent thing about his semblance was that the dust crystals he injected into his arms had also given him elemental properties as sparks danced around his body.
"Whoa," Iron Man stopped floating and landed on his feet with a loud 'Thunk.' "Dust crystals are one hell of a drug."
"I will not hold back when fighting you two." Surprisingly, Hazel could speak in a standard, controlled tone that contrasted with his psychotic form. "You should have brought the rest of your teammates."
"Yeah," Spider-Man started to laugh. "No, duh."
Just as Hazel was about to initiate the fight, the man suddenly felt everything shift around him. His surroundings started to look bigger, and it registered that the room wasn't growing. Instead, it was Hazel who was shrinking!
"NOOOOOooooo!" Screamed Hazel as he soon became the size of an ant. At the same time, Wasp made her presence known by growing back to her regular size. She then proceeded to contain Hazel in a glass jar that was used to handle small insects. Lifting said jar to her eye, Wasp smiled underneath her helmet at seeing Hazel scream his lungs out and beating at his prison.
"That went better than anticipated." Giving the small jar a shake to make Hazel dizzy. Wasp looked to her team and used her other hand for a thumbs-up. "We got both of them contained, and we also recorded Lionheart's confession."
"Yup, now we need to trust Black Widow and Raven to handle the White Fang." As much as he didn't trust them, Iron Man can admit that Black Widow can handle herself well, especially if it's goons like the White Fang. As for Raven, it was no doubt that having the Spring Maiden's powers was a huge advantage, so it was decided that she would deal with Adam. Of course, that didn't mean they didn't take account of their friends either, who were already landing somewhere nearby. "The rest of our friends will immediately handle and assist Widow with the White Fang. And since we just dealt with these two so quickly, we should back up the team."
"No, we should go to Raven," Spider-Man told them. "Ant-Man and Black Panther should be able to handle themselves without us. I know Adam can't beat her, but I don't want her to kill him."
"We did tell her to knock him out and not kill him."
"Yeah, but we are talking about Raven here. Not to mention Adam isn't like your regular enemy. We need to-" Spider-sense is starting to flair in the back of his skull, and without giving his friends a warning, the spider-themed hero shoots two web lines at his friends, pulls, and, thanks to his quick reflexes, saves his friends from being killed when a large beam of crimson energy erupted from underneath the school.
After the energy beam faded, Spider-Man checked his friends, who were still registering what had just happened.
"You guys are ok?" Despite them not showing any signs of damage, Spider-Man still asked his friends while also checking his surroundings for an enemy attack. "I know that attack. Adam must be going all out with Raven."
"Raven and Adam aren't the only ones we need to worry about." Wasp tucked away the shrunken Hazel into her built-in collapsable pouch. Pointing at where they last saw Lionheart; they can see the remains of Spider-Man's webbing now shattered across where the Headmaster used to be. "That attack must have been close enough to Lionheart that it weakened his bindings."
"We can worry about the literal scardey cat later." Activating the repulsors from his gauntlets and boots, Iron Man rosed from the ground and flew to where the fight was coming from. "We need to get down there and stop them! It would be pointless to stop the bombs when Adam and Raven can destroy the school themselves."
Flying head first into the crater, Wasp and Spider-Man followed their friend deeper into the school. Wasp unfurled her suit's wings and flew in while Spider-Man performed a backflip jump, allowing gravity to help him sink deeper into the hole.
Faster and faster, he sank deeper into the man-made crater, and as soon as bright colors assaulted his eyes, Spider-Man shot a web line to slow his descent. As Spider-Man used the web line to swing to safety, he could see he was now in the secret underground area of the school that housed a relic. Spider-Man never knew what to expect when he entered this place, but seeing as this place was dark and the only thing lighting the area was the large walkway and a tree growing glowing fruit, he thought he just fell into some storybook.
"So this is the vault that houses the relic." Spider-Man's thoughts are interrupted as he sees his friends help Raven attack Adam. "Adam was supposed to be on the lower level of the school where Raven would stop him, but I guess when you have a semblance that makes you a walking bomb, I can see how their fight would lead them down here."
Speaking about Adam, the bull faunus, whose appearance was glowing with bright crimson and white aura covering his body, was fighting Raven while deflecting or dodging Iron Man and Wasp's long-range attacks.
With Iron Man and Wasp raining down energy blasts in the air, Spider-Man used this as a distraction to get behind Adam's blind spot. Timing his strike with his friends, Spider-Man lunged at Adam as he blocked another energy bolt.
"OOF!" Adam was not prepared to feel a heavy force from behind him, causing his concentration to split. Unable to stop himself from falling forward, Adam braced himself when he felt the cold, rough floor, and when he turned around to look at who dared to take him, did he snarl with hate seeping into his words. "SPIDER-MAN!"
"Hey, how's it going." Said Spider-Man, who then delivered a quick straight punch to Adam's face. The blow made Adam crane his head back, giving Spider-Man a small window to follow up another attack.
Jumping off Adam, Spider-Man shot two web lines on both sides of the head terrorist, pulled, and used the elasticity to catapult his feet into Adam's chest.
"Gah!" Even though his aura was tanking most of the damage, Adam koffed up some blood from the attack. Not one to take such disrespect, Adam used the kinetic force and unleashed an attack that forced Spider-Man and anyone nearby to create some distance.
"You couldn't have called to let us know you needed help, Raven?" Even dodging debris from Adam's attack, Iron Man complained to the bandit leader. "We gave you a communicator for such things like this."
"I had him in the ropes," Raven, who was no longer hiding her Maiden powers, swiped her right hand and created a wall of wind that deflected anything near her. "How was I supposed to know he could output such power?"
"You did know because we told you his semblance! How about, when this is all over, you read a book!"
"Enough! Can't you guys argue after we stop Adam from trying to kill us!" Shouted Wasp, who weaved past each beam created by Adam and retaliated by firing her built-in stingers. "This isn't good! He isn't even aiming at us! If this keeps up, he might bury all of us along with him!"
Adam fired a condensed blast at the ceiling, making a cloud of dust cascade down the floor along with several large rocks. Using a broken piece of roof, Spider-Man threw it with ease at Adam, who responded by punching it into pebbles and retaliated by stomping his foot on the ground. A shockwave soon came at Spider-Man, and he had no choice but to web-swing away before he could fall into the darkness.
"I just realized he doesn't have his sword." Spoke Spider-Man. "He usually does more slashing than punching. Which is odd, as my jokes about him being an edge lord won't stick if he doesn't have a sword like the weird weeb he is."
"That's because I have it with me," Raven answered and, using her new katana, embued with magic and swung the blade that fired a slash of magic at Adam. "He broke my sword, so I decided to take his."
"RAAAH!" Putting his hands in front of him, Adam fired off a large beam at Raven's attack, and the two attacks clashed before canceling each other out. "Give that back! How dare you take what isn't yours, human!"
"Yeah, Raven," Spider-Man shouted. "How dare you take something Adam stole! What, no honor among thieves? Or is it no respect for terrorists? I can't tell with scum bags which have screwed up honor systems."
For speaking such disrespect, Adam swiped his arm in the air creating a sizable energy wave that Spider-Man evaded, yet could not avoid the shockwave when the attack exploded. Unable to create a web line in time, Spider-Man chose to take the fall instead. Rolling to disperse the impact, Spider-Man could not take a breath as he had to perform a hasty dodge roll when Adam started to attack him.
"Everything is ruined because of you! If you didn't exist, I wouldn't even be in this position! The White Fang's future will forever lose its goal of Faunus supremacy!" Despite Wasp and Iron Man trying to stop Adam by attacking him, the bull faunus ignored them and chose to kill Spider-Man solely. "If you didn't decide to go against your race. If you didn't choose to wear that stupid mask that people seem to rally behind, then I-"
"Hey, I have you know that I have a patent about wearing this mask! There is no way you think I'm stealing your ideas!" Spider-Man talked back like his life depended on it, even when on his back and desperately evading each killing blow. "Besides, I at least have a common goal of helping people, any people, no matter what race they are from. My marketability is all about being friendly, so people would go for me rather than someone who wants to kill all humans. I'm positive if you try to drink and barf out fire, that won't be enough to make you more likable!"
Putting both his hands back, Adam was about to slam them down to crush Spider-Man when Raven conjured a large wall of ice to block the blow. The impact caused by Adam created several cracks to form on the wall that soon crumbled. Yet, that small moment gave Spider-Man the needed time to web swing away, but not after firing a stream of webbing coated with fire dust that made the scattered ice melt and covered Adam with mist.
Blinded, Adam had his guard up and prepared for any attack, yet when his eyes saw something tiny move on his shoulder, he lost his focus. Wasp, who no longer had the element of surprise, attacked Adam by firing her stingers in his eye before flying away. As Adam screamed in pain and held his face, Iron Man chose to fly straight at Adam. His metal armor crashed into the swordsman, making a large crater. The aura protecting Adam flickered, signaling it could not take any more abuse, so in a hasty decision, Iron Man blasted a constant stream of repulsor energy from both his gauntlets and his chest piece.
"V.I.K! Turn on the power, bud! I'm finishing this fight here and now!" Not pulling any more punches, Iron Man's energy beams doubled in size to the point where Adam was engulfed in light.
"RAAAH!" The leader of the White Fang could withstand the attack by pushing his semblance even further. "I won't fall! I will have my dream become a reality! You can-"
Spider-Man used Adam's monologue to get behind him and punch the back of Adam's head with a weak force-infused punch.
"Damn, you! You dare attack me while my back is turned?"
"I!" Spider-Man punched Adam on the left side where his left kidney was.
"Don't!" He did a follow-up by striking Adam's other kidney.
"CARE!" Raising his leg high, Spider-Man brought his leg down on Adam's head, making the bull faunus lose his balance. Seeing the small window of weakness, Spider-Man reared his right fist and punched the back of Adam's head before web swinging away. "Iron Man! NOW!"
Iron Man poured more power into his attack as his friend web swung away. Adam was defenseless as Iron Man's repulsor beam engulfed his entire being so that not even the other heroes and Raven could see Adam's silhouette.
"Iron Man!" Screamed Spider-Man as he tapped his friend's shoulder. "I think you got him!"
"We have been flying and fighting non-stop! I am not taking any chances! You might have super endurance, but I don't, and I want to sleep already!"
After five minutes of a constant bombardment of highly condensed energy, V.I.K chose enough was enough and powered down the suit to leave enough energy for the armor. The smoking sinkhole that was 10 feet deeper due to Iron Man's energy blast showed Adam, who was surprisingly still in one piece with the only thing missing from him was his mask and his clothes. As if finally sensing the fight was over, Adam's naked body began to glow with bright red before breaking, signaling his aura was depleted.
"Ew! Gross!" Iron Man turned his head away from the sight. "I didn't expect that the end of this mission would be me seeing that."
"You could have killed him, you know."
"He could have killed all of us. But his aura seemed to have saved him. It is honestly confusing how aura even works, depending on how much stress it can take. Oh well, I'll just sum up aura as BS." Walking to a nearby rock, Iron Manleaned onto the stone and lifted his head to look up and sigh in relief. "Thank goodness this is now over; I was really dreading if Adam chose to go atomic and decided just to screw everyone and make himself into a bomb."
"True," Not wanting to see a naked man the rest of the night. Spier-Man covered Adam in strong webbing, pulled the terrorist out of the hole, and spun him into a large cacoon leaving only his head untouched. "Now, we must help Black Widow wrangle the rest of the White Fang."
"That, or..." Iron Man looked to the large vault, where he spotted Raven standing in the center and Wasp at the bandit's side. "We can do something else that is more interesting."
"What are you-" Iron Man got up from where he was sitting, leaving Spider-Man to himself. "Seriously?"
Not wanting to stand by himself, Spider-Man caught up to Iron Man and made it to the large magic door with Raven and Wasp arguing.
"-sing the relic could give us the advantage," Raven said. "It might give us what we need to end this feud."
"We are here to get it, and that is it. Who knows what it could do if we misuse it?" Wasp replied, and when she saw her friends, Wasp turned to them. "You guys aren't hurt, right?"
"Just fine, but what did we miss." Spider-Man looked between Raven and Wasp.
"She was saying she wants to use the relic. We are not supposed to use it, just take it and keep it far away from Salem and Ozpin."
"But you all don't know what this relic is and what it can do." Raven brought her own opinion in hopes Spider-Man and Iron Man would agree. "The relic could be used instead of being sealed away. Why put away a weapon when we can use it against Salem and Ozpin? Isn't Fury just repeating the same tactic Ozpin is using?"
"The difference is that Nick wants to ensure they cannot use it out of concern for the planet. You heard what Fury said, he knows what Ozpin has done, and he wants to make sure these relics are away from someone like Ozpin, or whatever his name was from his first life. Fury doesn't want any of them to win their stupid eternal feud."
"You don't think Fury won't use this relic when we hand it over to him? The man is a mystery, even to me, and if he has the backing of all four kingdoms, then you know he holds some secrets."
"Ok, let's all just step back and breathe." Spider-Man brought his hands into the air. "We're all tired, and fighting Adam left us more irritated, so arguing with each other isn't helping either."
"Spidey is right," Iron Man used his helmet to scan the vault's structure. "That thing emits a unique signature that matches Raven's Maiden powers. We can just have her unlock it, but using it for ourselves isn't the right choice. We must ensure everyone is ok at the school before we rush into this."
He was nodding his head in thanks for Iron Man's support. Spider-Man connected to Black Widow's communicator to get an update on what was happening on the surface.
"Spider-Man?" Widow sounded alarmed. "What was that red light? Do you need backup?"
"Don't worry; we handled the source of the problem. Iron Man, Wasp, Raven, and I are in the underground vault. Before you ask how we got down here, the culprit was Adam, who was gracious enough to roll the red carpet. But enough about us, how is everything going up there?"
"Glad you guys are still in one piece. We just finished tying up the White Fang Adam brought along. While you were dealing with him, the rest of your team quickly cleaned things up. Could you meet us in the courtyard f the school? That is where we are putting all the goons in one spot."
"On it, be there in 10 minutes." Cutting off the communication, Spider-Man looked at Raven and Wasp. "We can do this later after all this is done. For now, let's go see our friends."
"Hey, glad you guys showed up!" The first person to greet them was Ant-Man, who was not prepared when Wasp wrapped her arms around him. "Glad you are ok too."
The two separated from the hug, and Ant-Man motioned them to follow. "I want you guys to meet some people we befriended on our mission."
When Spider-Man and his team made it to the courtyard, he was suspected to only find the rest of the Avengers and Black Widow with a bunch of tied-up Fang terrorists. Instead, he can see another group of Funaus, only instead of wearing bone-white masks, they wore a different uniform and were following orders from a man who was just as tall as Hazel.
How the man acted and how easily he commanded other people made Spider-Man think he was some officer, yet that changed when someone approached him.
'Blake?' Was what came to mind, but upon a better inspection, the person who resembled Blake was much older, making him realize that this woman was Blake's mom. 'Right! I remember that I checked Blake's background on the internet! That woman is Blake's mom, and the person in charge is none other than her dad, Ghira Belladonna!'
As if sensing someone was looking at him, the original leader of the White Fang looked around the area and spotted Spider-Man. Barking out an order to carry on without him, Ghira, followed by his wife, Kali, headed to where Spider-Man was standing.
"It is good to meet you, Spider-Man," Said Ghira, bringing up a hand for a handshake. "I had the pleasure of helping your friends stop murder and now stopped the White Fang from committing another unforgivable act."
"Thank you for helping, sir." Spider-Man grabbed the hand in front of him and gave a firm shake. "I also thank you for assisting my team. Who knows what would happen if you didn't."
"Nonsense, it is I who should thank you. If your friends hadn't prevented Adam's coup, more Faunus would have been caught in the crossfire. As you can see," Ghira waved around the group of White Fang members. "These are the only followers willing to carry out Adam's orders. If Adam's plan were a success, then more would have flocked to him and his unjust cause."
"Don't forget there help repel the White Fang's assassination attempt at our lives," Kali said with a happy tone, and tilting her head made her look cute if she didn't talk about how the Fang tried to kill them. "We always knew they would try and attack us, but to think they would do so the very same day Adam failed to kill Sienna shows how impatient Adam can be. It was even worse knowing the person sent to attack us was Llia, of all people."
"Uh-huh," Spider-Man just nodded his head. He didn't know half of what they were talking about, but he was sure Ant-Man and Back Pather would fill him later, so he agreed to whatever Kali was talking about. "Well, I am happy everything is going well with you two. I am sure your daughter is happy to know you guys are safe."
"Do you know our daughter? How is she?" Kali stepped away from her husband and closed the distance between herself and Spider-Man.
'How the heck is this woman livelier than Blake?'
"I met her when she helped repel the Grimm during the Vytal festival. She is doing well and has a team she can rely on." Spider-Man left the part where Blake also fought a mech on a busy highway, as he doesn't want to explain something irrelevant to this situation. "But we can talk about that later. I have someone you both want to see."
Removing the cacoon off his back, Spider-Man placed Adam's unconscious body in front of Ghira and Kali. While Spider-Man was expected to see them have a look of hate at the bull faunus, Ghira only had one of pity.
"Adam," The old leader of the White Fang looked disappointed. "I wished I had seen the signs of your hate consuming you. But now, I suppose I am happy that it has ended."
Saying their thanks once more, the husband and wife left Spider-Man to greet the rest of his teammates. He can see Ant-Man is still talking with Wasp, so the webhead chooses to greet Black Panther, who is standing in a part of the courtyard standing by in silence.
"Spider-Man," Seeing the leader of the team approach, the prince of Wakanda greeted his ally. "I see you saw the leader of Menagerie."
"Yeah, they're charming, to say the least. Especially, Mrs. Belladonna, she is-"
"Straight forward and not prone with other personal space."
"I was going to say 'out there,' but that is also true. I also know their daughter, and I got to say it was a surprise that she isn't the same as her mom and dad."
"She is still young, and I imagine her actions are merely a way to find who she is. Understandably, the child would try to be something different than the parent." Black Panther said in understanding. "I was surprised by their personality when they provided sanctuary, but they showed their right to rule Menagrie when their people rallied behind Ghira in helping us. Sienna Khan is also safe and secure under S.H.I.E.L.D security and will provide full cooperation in handling the White Fang."
"So, that's that then, the White Fang is no more?"
"Perhaps, but it does not have to be," Black Panther can see Spider-Man tilt his head in confusion. "The White Fang is a symbol meant to help and support Funaus throughout Remnant. Adam and his ilk have twisted its view, but with him and his followers finally dealt a crippling blow, the White Fang can reform and become what it was meant to be—a symbol for all to follow, both human and Faunus, for true equality and peace."
"You think so?"
"I know so," Black Panther said with the utmost certainty. "I hear whispers from Ghira's men that he will take charge of the White Fang once more."
"That's great! I'm sure Blake will be happy to hear that!" The panther hero just nodded at what Spider-Man said and only paid attention to where Adam was being shipped off by a group of people wearing a different uniform from the local police of Mistral. "They sure showed up fast."
"That is because they are not the Mistral police. See how well they carry themselves? How they easily comb over the people with questions, while at the same time taking all the evidence away, leaving nothing left to chance."
"I do remember hearing Black Widow tell us S.H.I.E.L.D operatives. Oh, Black Widow is the spy we met while at Haven. She was one of the workers here and gave us the needed intel on Lionheart."
"I see. Then I should let you know that the ally, Hawk Eye, is quite helpful with a bow. That was also the same man I fought when we assembled the team."
"That's awkward."
"Thankfully, he was an understanding person, and we were able to work well in protecting Sieena from Adam's assassination attempt." Even when fully suited, Spider-Man can tell that the hero next too him is exhausted from their first mission.
"Yeah, we can finally go- AH! Dang it!" Spider-Man raised his voice, startling Black Panther and some people nearby. "Lionheart! We forgot about him!"
"Now that you think about it," Black Panther looked around the courtyard. "I do not see Hawk Eye nor the other spy."
"Oh no! Oh no! Oh no!" Lionheart, now the ex-headmaster of Haven Academy, ran as fast as his legs could take him to his office. He dared not look back when the fighting started nor even think about helping Hazel with the fighting. His cowardly mind kept shouting to run away from the action and leave the school. Yet the rational part of his mind was able to remind Lionheart that he couldn't leave, not yet, at least. He has sold his loyalty to Salem, and he will be her double agent for her protection.
Forcefully opening the door to his office, the Headmaster went over to his desk and logged into his computer.
'I can still gain favor with Salem by at least giving her all the information I have collected when working close to Ozpin.' From plans to dealing with Grimm, possible allies to join his group, and even certain Maiden candidates, all the information Lionheart got from Ozpin was being downloaded into a small thumb drive in his desk drawer.
"Almost done," He muttered incoherently. Just as the bar shows it to be 90% done, Lionheart hears a faint humming sound at the doorframe from his office. "Lady Salem!"
Lionheart could see a Seer hover ominously at his door, and its bulbous glass-like head projected the image of Salem. Her stare made his fearful body stand still as if he continued to shake like a leave Salem would kill him. Not wanting to look disrespectful, Lionheart walked around his computer and prostrated himself at the Seer. "It is an honor to have you-"
"Why are you here and not fighting like Hazel and the White Fang?"
Her question sounded simple enough, but Lionheart knew that if he answered honestly, then he could kiss his life goodbye.
"I-I thought that it was imperative that I should fall back and retrieve much-needed data to give you, my Mistress!"
"Are you assuming that you are my high priority?" Despite not raising her voice, Salem still came across as enraged by the notion.
"No, no, no! I am not thinking of myself with such importance. I am merely suggesting to you-"
"So now you think for me? I did not know you were the one in charge."
At some point, Lionheart's voice became more strained, and his face was sweating. Salem would twist his words no matter what he tried to make him more of a fool. He wanted to talk, yet a pale hand from Salem made the man stop his futile attempt at negotiating.
"I tire of this. Not only did you fail to keep your end of the bargain by destroying this school. You also showed your true colors by running away and leaving my most capable servant to fend for himself. As much as I do not care for mortal life, I still value those with potential. And from where I'm standing, I do not see such potential, especially from you."
"Please, Mistress," At this point, Lionheart couldn't even think of any way to spare his life, so he just began to beg. "I can still be of service. I just need to escape, and with your help-"
Salem's frown deepened, and a look of disgust finally showed on her face. The Seer used one of its tentacles to wrap around Lionheart's neck and, showing surprising strength, lifted the full-grown man off his feet.
"You do not give me orders, coward." To show her anger, the Seer tightened the tentacle around his neck. "You forget that you are the one who came to me, not the other way around. I took you in because I thought you would give me a greater advantage, but I got a useless pawn who cost me two valuable pieces and a Relic. So now, the only thing I see to be the most logical move is removing you from the board."
Before he could utter another pathetic plea for his life, the Seer raised three more taloned tentacles to impale him. As his life flashed before his eyes, luck had not yet abandoned him when an arrow pierced the tendril holding him by the neck, dropping him and giving Lionheart a chance to breathe life into his lungs.
Unable to react to the surprise attack, the Seer was attacked by several more arrows pinning all its tendrils to a wall, followed by a pair of arrows attached by a net. Like a cornered animal, the Grimm tried to free itself, but out of nowhere, Black Widow emerged from the corner of the office, fired a built-in taser line from a bracelet she was wearing, and shocked the Grimm. Now paralyzed by Black Widow, Hawk Eye revealed himself hiding from the shadows, followed by Nick Fury standing behind the archer.
"Got a clear shot, Fury," Hawk eye had an arrow notched and aimed it at the Grimm. Unlike Black Widow, Hake Eye was a human male sporting a purple skullcap with an embroidered black H and purple shades, followed by thick padded pants and a sleeveless vest sporting the same dull purple with some black too. "Just say the word."
"You two just keep your sights on that thing," Nick Didn't look at Widow or Hawk Eye. The spymaster just used his single working eye to stare down at Lionheart, still getting air in him. "I'm just going to talk to an... old friend."
Crouching low, Nick placed his hand on Lioheart's shoulder, making the faunus jolt before realizing he was looking at someone he thought was long dead. "N-Nick!?"
"Hey, Leo," Without warning, Nick helped his old friend by bringing his arm over Nick's shoulder and placing him on an office chair. Leaning on the desk, Nick Fury performed a rare action he hadn't done in some time. He smiled. "Been some time. Glad I showed up before you turned black and blue. Mind filling me in on what is going on?"
"I-I am just as lost as you," He wasn't sure how or when Nick arrived, but he decided the best option was to play dumb and pretend to act innocent. "I ran into my office to contact Ozpin, but I was apprehended by that thing over there. It is as we feared. Salem is making a move."
"Do you know anything she said to you before I arrived?"
"I," Lionheart paused. This was a 50/50 chance that this could work in his favor. On the one hand, he can reveal to Fury Salem's next target to gain favor with Ozpin to achieve safety, or the other option is to remain still loyal to Salem and try to be her double agent. Knowing he had no time to ponder the options thoroughly, Lionheart's fear chose for him. "Salem told me that her next target was Atlas! She knows that the Winter Maiden is slowly approaching death and is planning for Atlas to be her next target. We have to tell Ozpin and have Ironwood ready for Salem's arrival."
Everything he said was the truth, and why he decided to reveal the truth so he could betray Ozpin later on. When he does leave this place with Nick, Lionheart can attempt to reach Salem to tell her he is leading Ozpin down to Atlas, so she can create a trap to not only take the Winter Maiden but have the chance to capture Ozpin.
"I see," Nick just nodded before putting a hand on Lionheart's shoulder. "Thank you for letting me know, Leo."
*BANG-BANG*
"Gugh!" One moment the Ex-Headmaster of Haven was fine, and the next, he was coughing out blood due to having two gunshot wounds in his chest. His white dress shirt was quickly turning red like his vest, and the feeling in his body began to go numb along with the inability to breathe. In his last ditch effort, the lion faunus grasped Nick's coat and said one word.
"W-why?"
*BANG*
Nick didn't even humor his request and just unloaded one more round under Lionheart's chin, causing blood and brain matter to exit from the top of his skull. Linoheart's lifeless body fell backward and leaned into his now bloodied chair, where Nick stared at his corpse with a dispassionate stare.
"I could ask the same of you," Fury said to his now-dead friend. Pulling out a clean white cloth, Nick Fury wiped the handle of the gun he used, placed it into Lionheart's hand, and then searched the body to retrieve the thumb drive.
"Shame; I was waiting for him to give me my last paycheck."
"You'll get your Christmas bonus early, Widow. You know what to do."
"I do, Sir," Widow pulled out a sidearm from her belt. "Made sure I have the same rounds you just fired too. I had to fire my weapon before Lionheart could attack, and before I could treat him, he caught me off guard by brandishing a gun and killed himself."
"That should be enough for the Avengers for now, at least." Nick removed his stare from his now-dead associate and to the Grimm. "I wasn't expecting to meet you so soon, but now is better than later."
"Am I supposed to know you?" Salem decided to use the Seer still to view what was happening rather than just command it to kill itself. The person she saw was a mystery, as Lionheart never told her about this man, making her assume that this person wasn't as crucial for even Lionheart to consider him a threat to warn her about. "While I should thank you for killing that waste of space, I see no reason to know who you are if you are just yet another pawn for Ozma to use."
*Sigh* "Chess references really are getting old," Fury muttered. "Consider this a warning. Ozpin isn't the only one you should take seriously; after we're done with you, he will be next."
"Oh?" Salem's boredom turned to slight amusement. "Perhaps there is some interest in you if you believe Ozma is your enemy."
"Not just my enemy, but humanity as a whole. If you think you and your ghost of an ex-husband can use us to fight yall's battles, think again. Because the Avengers will stop all this once and for all."
"'The Avengers, so that is the name the group calls themselves. How appropriate. Tell me then, what is your name, if I am ever to meet you?"
"My name? Well, it's-"
*Bang*
Nick Fury fired at the Seer, causing the creature to hang lifeless on the wall until it started disintegrating.
"None of your damn business." Holstering his gun, Fury walked to the door to leave when he stopped. "I expect you guys to stay on script. Be sure to also play nice with your new teammates too."
"You think Salem will change her plans about Atlas? Lionheart did squill about her plans in front of her." Hawkeye asked. "Was it even wiser to reveal your face too, sir?"
"No, I think she will still go with the plan to take the Winter Maiden. She spent countless years fighting Ozpin, but now I believe she is done holding back. If she is planning to take the Winter Maiden, she will do so with full force."
Welp, this chapter was a long time coming. This was supposed to be published last month, but I had to pause to finish this chapter back then 'casue of personal obligations taking precedence in March. I apologize for leaving only a Omake for March, but I didn't want to publish a small-worded Arthur note saying there will be nothing until April.
Regardless, though, thank you all for being patient, and I hope you like this chapter. With this chapter done and dusted, we further the Avengers story by taking them to Mantle. Of course, there will be some smaller adventures along the way, so I hope you all will enjoy the ride.
In this chapter, I wanted to make a big fight scene with Adam and have him clash with the Avengers with not only weapons but with ideals and such. However, I wanted to limit that, as I don't want to make this chapter drag on by having a long-winded word text while they are fighting, so instead, I just had the Avengers deal with him as quickly as possible.
After all, the Avengers don't really see any need to take his words seriously when he is trying to kill humans and almost succeeds in killing Sienna Khan and trying to assassinate Blake's parents.
For Hazel, that too was cut off, as the Avengers had enough time to prepare and set up a surprise to take him down. They had the time to plan and had the element of surprise, and unlike the show, the Avengers knew how to pull off a successful sneak attack.
We can already see Raven pulling some resistance to helping Nick get to relics. That is because she is innately distrustful of people, which I wanted to portray in this chapter, as I don't want the team to look all that cooperative, as the team is still new.
Hope you guys liked this chapter, and feel free to fav, follow, and leave a review. If you guys have questions, please feel free to PM me, and I will answer your questions as soon as possible.
[Omake: Deadpool kills the fanfic universe]
Life being reincarnated in your favorite show is something of an odd feeling. You feel excited to be part of a universe you saw when they were on TV and to know you are now in such a place makes you feel nostalgic. Then you also feel a wave of confusion knowing you are here, and even more confused is knowing that you are in a universe that has two things you liked in your old life.
You liked reading Marvel, and you liked watching RWBY. Now, you are in a world where both are in this universe.
As for the main difference? You are Spider-Man.
Well, more like when you applied to be a Hunstmen, your semblance took traits of a spider. Most likely because in your previous life, you admired Spider-Man and the comics about the webhead.
"This is it," You whispered as you looked out the window to see Beacon Academy getting closer. "I'm very lucky to be here, and more importantly..."
You can see the same main characters chatting amongst themselves behind you. Ruby and Yang are the same, just as you remembered in the first episode, and if the other blonde that passed you by holding his stomach was any indication of being Jaune Arc, then that means you arrived at the first volume of the show.
"Maybe I can prevent Vale from falling with my knowledge of the show? But should I? I could make things worse." As you pondered the pros and cons of tampering with the canon timeline, your spider senses screeched as the danger was nearby. "UGH! What? It never felt this pain before, so why no-"
A loud sound of glass breaking and a gust of wind was all you registered before your entire body was covered in flames. Thanks to your aura, you could handle the shockwave of the attack, but the firing covering your body quickly ate away at your aura, giving you a limited time to find a way to put yourself out.
It didn't help with young teens screaming in confusion and fear as they held on for dear life as the aircraft started spinning out of control and plummeting to the dirt.
Of course, what was the biggest factor of this nightmare was the fact the explosion came from where Jaune went to go to use the bathroom to throw up. Making the scene play out in front of you all the more horrifying as you see fire, and bloody remains of what was once Jaune Arc, one of the show's main characters, be reduced to mush.
"I have to do something!" Pushing away the students, you went to the cockpit and saw the driver trying his best to gain control.
"What are you doing?" Finally noticing your presence, the pilot looked back from his seat to face you. "Get back and buckle up. I can't get this thing to descend slowly."
You wanted to let him know a student has been killed, yet you spotted something heading straight toward you.
"Look out!" You warned, but it was too late as the speeding object collided with the cockpit and erupted in a huge bloom of smoke.
"Welp, that is one and dusted." Deadpool dropped the comically oversized rocket launcher off his shoulder. "Glad I got to get rid of the OC before they could pull their stupid plot armor early."
Witness thing the now destroyed bullhead scatter into small pieces, Deadpool nodded his head for a job well done and pulled out a small remote from his belt.
"Welp, with the OC dead, I can finally do this!" Deadpool pushed the large red button with a single finger, and a second later, a huge bright light erupted from the city of Vale. This explosion did not produce smoke and death; instead, it was a constant dome of light that continued to expand, eating away at everything.
Not wanting to be erased, Deadpool pulled out a high-tech gun that shot out a human-sized portal for him to enter. Upon exiting the portal, Deadpool was greeted by the sight of millions of other Deadpools, each with a different genre and appearance, showing that they also came from a different universe.
"Hope they are still selling some food because I am hungry!" His moment soon cut off when sirens began to blare from the distance. "This alarm can only mean one thing! A Legionpool is being called to kill an OC in a Naruto Fanfic! Looks like chimichangas are on pause Because it's time to kill some weebs!"
[Omake: Qrow is being given a tour of Xavier's after Sofia's mutant powers had awakened]
Jean led Qrow into the Institute's Medical Wing. A few moments later, they came across a wooden door. Upon the door was a plaque with an Inscribed Name.
Dr. Mortimer Toynbee, M.D.
This must be the office of the doctor he was meeting. The two opened the door. As the door slowly opened, Qrow wondered what kind of person Doctor Toynbee was. He expected a doddering, stiff old man.
That wasn't the case.
Sitting patiently at a mahogany desk was a snappily-dressed bipedal toad wearing a lab coat. The humanoid amphibian had leathery grey-green skin with two round, almost cartoonish brown eyes. The toad's sandal-clad feet were propped on the table.
The former bandit momentarily worried that he was drunk or high. The man had sworn off alcohol, so he wasn't drunk. Not once has he tried any drugs, so he definitely wasn't high as a kite.
But the sight before him was so surreal that he might as well be going crazy. He can definitely see that as a possibility.
Sure, he's met a few amphibian-type Faunus, but he's never seen a human-sized toad. Xavier had told him that many mutations could be extreme. But he had thought Hank McCoy was a special case.
"Mr. Branwen, allow me to introduce Dr. Toynbee, one of the school's doctors," Jean told the man. "Mort, this is Qrow Branwen, the father of one of our new students."
"A pleasure, sir." The toad man greeted and offered a leathery, webbed hand.
Qrow stared at the hand. But not wanting to be rude, he took the doctor's hand and shook it.
He immediately regretted that decision as Toynbee's hand felt damp, cold, and slick despite its dried appearance. When he retracted his own hand, he saw his palm was now coated in a thin sheet of what he can only describe as slime. The Huntsman fought the urge to gag at the sight.
The Doctor noticed Qrow's perturbed expression and chuckled embarrassingly. "Apologies, I've got a bit of a cold. Mucus glands are acting up."
Qrow told the doctor it was no problem… all while wiping the slime-riddled hand on his cape.
"Also, Qrow will stay at the Mansion for a while as a substitute teacher. So he needs a physical." Jean told the doctor.
"Excellent, excellent! Don't worry. This won't take long. It's just a general exam, nothing painful at all." Toynbee reassured his new patient before opening a closet.
As the doctor fished through the drawer, Jean told Qrow. "I'll be outside. Just holler if you need me."
She turned to the door. But just as she was out of earshot, she whispered in pity. "May God have mercy on your soul…"
Qrow's eyes bugged out when heard that. She was already out of the room before he could get an explanation from her. Then he heard the Doctor say, "Okay, let's test those reflexes of yours."
When he turned back to the toad man, the huntsman nearly jumped out of his skin from fright. Rather than a small reflex hammer, he saw Doctor Toynbee gripping a heavy-duty sledgehammer!
The hammer's head had to weigh at least 16 pounds!
He may have an aura, but just one swing from that thing would hurt. Not terribly so, but he'd definitely get bruised.
"Now, if you'd just sit, I can get started. Which knee would you like to start with?" Toynbee asked politely, ignorant of Qrow's panic.
"No-no-no, I think I'm good! See here?" Qrow sat on a chair and knocked a fist on one of his knees, and immediately kicked up. "Reflexes are good! Nothing to check there!"
Despite the ridiculous display, Toynbee shrugged and said, "Good enough for me."
He placed the sledgehammer back in the closet, much to Qrow's relief. The huntsman will rest easy tonight, knowing he dodged bodily harm. Maybe his luck was finally beginning to turn in spite of his semblance.
He watched as the doctor pulled out a tongue depressor and asked, "Okay, let's take a look at that throat. Open your mouth, please."
Qrow did as he was ordered.
"No, no, your other mouth." Toynbee clarified, eliciting a confused look from his patient.
"But I only got the one." Qrow told him.
Toynbee was genuinely surprised, "Really?"
The doctor pulled out a notepad to jot down some notes. Qrow took a moment to ask, "Uh, is there another doctor I can see?"
Offended, The doctor ceased his writing and cried out, "Young man, I am a professional! Now open your mouth and say…."
Toynbee's throat expanded as let out an audible croak and a series of throaty chirps.
Despite much hesitance, Qrow followed the doctor's directions. He cleared his throat and mimicked the croaking and chirps to the best of his ability. The sounds he made were a poor imitation.
To his surprise and horror, Toynbee's grayish-green face turned red with anger.
Before Qrow could ask what was wrong, Toynbee roared in outrage, "MY MOTHER WAS A SAINT! GET OUT!"
