[Sera-san, let's get what we need for the trip.] I start heading towards the door but Sera-san seems to be standing there with her eyes closed and hands clasped. I quickly peek at her desire and see that she doesn't want to fail my trial? I don't remember giving her a trial.
[Sera-san?]
[Ah! Sorry, Ichiro-san! I was just thanking the Supreme One for his guidance.] I raise my eyebrow.
[Supreme One?] Sera-san looks at me with shock, and then her expression changes swiftly as if knowing and nods to herself.
[So we have to start from there.] She seems to be thinking of something really intense over there. As I stand by the door, Sera-san continues to mutter to herself. Then Elded-san walks up to me.
[Ichiro-dono, I would say I wish you a safe journey, but considering it's you I can't imagine there's anything in existence that can harm you.]
[Ahaha, there really isn't. But I need to keep things in moderation, otherwise my journey will be a little difficult.] Elded-san nods at my words and reaches out with a sack. I look down and accept the sack with both hands.
[Thank you, Elded-san, but what is this?]
[Dried meats and bread. Common fair for adventurers and travelers. I'm sorry but you'll need to get used to this.] Elded-san looks down with a bitter smile.
[Ahaha, there's no worry, Elded-san. In fact I look forward to a little bit of a rough adventure.] Elded-san merely smiles and wishes me good luck. Finally Sera-san came out of her personal thoughts and saw me tie the sack to my belt.
[What's that, Ichiro-san?]
[My provisions. We should get yours as well.] Sera-san immediately raises her hand towards me as if to dismiss me.
[As a priestess of the Divine Path, I shall pray to the Supreme One and he shall provide what I need.] Give me a break lady. Elded-san leans in and whispers in my ear.
[I've been meaning to ask you Ichiro-dono, does that actually work?] I look at Elded-san with a bitter smile.
[Not really. It's not like I can hear that sort of thing, and if I'm not paying attention...hm...] I place my hand on my chin and think it over.
[I suppose I actually could do that. I don't know why I never really bothered to try before. I guess I'll try paying more attention to prayers then.] Sera-san leans in and looks at me.
[What do you mean you'll pay more attention to prayers, Ichiro-san?] Whoops, I said that out loud. I need to pay more attention.
[Ahaha, I was just think that since you're a priestess I should pay more attention to prayers and how to pray. Since I should probably pray and what have you.] I try to make an excuse, but Sera-san doesn't seem convinced. I try to hurry things along.
[In any case, go get provisions, Sera-san. Safety first. And if you're not going to use it at least others can.]
[There is no need, Ichiro-dono. The Supreme One will provide.] I think I feel a headache coming on. Oh well, I think I can solve this. I step outside and Elded-san and Sera-san follow. I then make a lightning bolt slam into the ground just a bit a head of us and freeze time as the bolt is leaving. I walk up and write on the dirt with my finger.
[What was that?!] Elded-san looks at me and I just smile at him. He seems to understand and shakes his head. Sera-san on the other hand immediately falls into prayer. I shake my head and walk up to the spot where I made the lightning fall.
[Sera-san...uh...I think it's for you.] I try to play it off and I see Elded-san hold back laughter. Sera-san's eyes open wide and she rushes over. She kneels in front of my writing and seems to be scrutinizing what I had wrote. I don't see why, it's pretty straight forward.
[Such profound wisdom.] I don't see how. All I said was help yourself first so that you have the strength to help others. Then I said get provisions for the journey ahead and be well prepared. If you lack money then Ichiro, myself, would provide help. Sera-san snaps her gaze towards me as if sparkling.
[Ichiro-san! A proclamation from the Supreme One! We must prepare ourselves fully for the journey ahead!] I look at Sera-san and peek at her stats. Apparently she is now trying to prepare for the first challenge? Oh well, I guess there's not much I can do about it.
[Elded-san, you heard her. I guess we need to prepare.] Elded-san seems to have thought of something and then bows towards me.
[Of course, Ichiro-dono.] And he walks away. I turn back towards Sera-san who seems to be in deep prayer over my words. I guess I might as well see what I can do with the system.
I focus on Sera-san and see if there's anything about prayers but I don't see a tab for it. So then I zoom in on the map to be right over Sera-san. It's a bit weird since she's right in front of me and all, but I can't hear anything from her prayer or see what she's thinking. So then I decide to try something different.
[Sera-san, are you praying right now?]
[Of course, Ichiro-san.]
[Why aren't you saying anything?] Sera-san let's out a heavy sigh and looks at me.
[Ichiro-san, the way to pray is to clasp your hands like this, then you kneel and with your whole heart offer up your prayer to the Supreme One. Whether the Supreme One will answer is up to the Supreme One.] I kneel and clasp my hands how Sera-san shows me.
[Ok, but where is the Supreme One?] Sera-san looks at me like how one looks at a child asking why the ocean is so big. She smiles and looks up at the sky.
[He watches upon us from up high.] I look up at the sky and then back at Sera-san.
[Then shouldn't we just tell him? Shouldn't we say our prayer out loud?]
[That's not how it works, Ichiro-san.] I smile at Sera-san. Well let's just see. As I'm already zoomed in on us, let's see what happens.
[Oh, Supreme One! Please give me a bunch of gold to buy a horse!] I look up at the sky. Naturally I don't manifest a horse. I'm testing a theory here after all.
[See, Ichiro-san? That's not how praying works.] I look at Sera-san and get up.
[Then why don't you try. Maybe because I'm not a priest it doesn't work?]
[Even if you were of the church that's not how it works.] I hold my hands up and smile bitterly.
[Sera-san, just try. I want to see. Please?] I look at here with a pleading expression. I see her blush a little and she walks past me.
[F-f-fine. But it's not how it works.] She kneels and clasps her hands. Lowering her head and closing her eyes she begins to pray.
[Oh, Supreme One. I am unworthy, but if you find it good, please help me prepare for this journey and to fulfill your will. Please give me strength to help those less fortunate than myself. By your will, use me as your instrument.] Holy cow! It worked! It was a little weird to hear the prayer in my ears twice. It was like a strange echo, but I can't believe it! I can actually hear prayers. Hm. I guess I should probably answer her prayers. I give her the Blessed trait and Regeneration trait as well. I then shine the Divine Light on her. I usually use that to deal with undead, but this works too. It'll cure any diseases, but more importantly I think it'll be a good sight. I look forward to seeing it from this angle.
I use the power and I hear a crack in the sky. Sera-san and myself look up at the sky and see clouds swirling above. Then the clouds rip open and what seems to be floating islands and a great golden land was visible. Light shot down and slammed onto Sera-san. Then incredibly beautiful people with wings descended from the sky and stood in the sky and blew horns. Those horns seemed to have an effect on Sera-san. I immediately stop using the Divine Light power as a cold sweat rolls down my back.
I look over at Sera-san who is crying rivers from her eyes.
[Oh Supreme One! You heard my prayer! Thank you! Thank you with all my soul! Forever shall your praise be on my tongue.] I'm standing there watching this scene when I feel a slap on my back. I turn and see Elded-san standing there. He whispers into my ear.
[I thought you said you were going to lay low, Ichiro-dono.] He furrows his brow. I rub my neck and try to avoid eye contact.
[Ahaha, I was testing something out.]
[Testing something out my ass.]
[The damage is already done. Don't worry, I can handle this.] Elded-san looks at me with a bitter smile and sighs.
[As you will, Supreme One.] He says with a cheeky smile on his face. My eyes widen to that statement.
[Wait, Elded-san. Is that what the mortals call me in Elardia?] Elded-san looks at me and chuckles.
[You'll be traveling with a priestess of the Divine Order. Why not ask her?] He pats me on the back and starts walking away. I turn back to see Sera-san standing and looking at her hands.
[Sera-san?] She looks at me with a bright smile and tears on her face.
[It's like I'm not wearing armor at all!] Ah, right. Blessed also increases strength. I'm sure it's fine.
[Shall we go then?]
[No, Ichiro-san. I need to purchase provisions for what is ahead as the Supreme One has spoken. But...um...Ichiro-san...I...I-I-I d-d-d-don't have any m-m-money.] She looks so cute when she's embarrassed. I just smile helplessly and hand her 3 large silver coins.
[Get what you think we might need.] Sera-san's eyes open wide. She holds the 3 large silver coins with both hands even though they're not that big.
[Ichiro-san...no...dono...is this ok?] Seems Sera-san has come to a personal conclusion about me. Either way it should be fine.
[Of course, Sera-san. Just do what you think is right, and if it's too much than keep it just in case.]
[I dare not keep your money, Ichiro-dono.] She bows towards me. I just wave my hand to dismiss her.
[It's fine, it's fine. Just go ask Elded-san and he can get you what you need.] She looks at the coins and back at me. She does this a couple of times before she bows and walks away. She then looks back at me and bows again, before walking away again.
I look forward with a smile on my face. I can't wait to see the rest of my world and meet the people who live here.
POV Sera
What a mysterious man. He knows nothing of the Supreme One, knows nothing of the human religion or church, but then seems to know all about its history, and I think he was totally unaffected by the Light of Heaven. Then to offer up 3 large silver coins? I couldn't hope to earn this if I slaved away for 10 years. He's so generous.
I look back at him and he smiles at me, and it seems to seep into my very soul. He's generous, kind, patient, understanding, and seems to have the attention of the Supreme One?
Wait! Green eyes, uncanny beauty, divine disposition, immune to holy light, but not injured by it, and the village chief shows immense respect for him! I gasp and quickly look back. Ichiro-dono seems to be looking off into the distance with a smile on his face. Didn't he teach me the proper way to pray?
I smile to myself. So that's how it is.
[The God of Benevolence indeed.] In the holy scriptures it says the God of Benevolence was the son of the Supreme One. Well really all the gods were children of the Supreme One, but the God of Benevolence was said to be born from a mortal woman. Hence why he takes special notice of the mortal races and acts especially kind to them.
But then why does he want to travel around? Why does he seem so interested in the Divine Path? I realized something!
[I'm such a fool!] Of course he's interested in the church. He taught me how to properly pray! No one of the Divine Path is praying correctly! Then that means the gods can't hear our prayers?! Such a revelation! He's traveling to learn more about the mortals of this world and to help us pray properly!
So benevolent! He left the divine realm just so he could personally help us! But why is he traveling by foot? He could just appear in the churches and correct our misunderstandings.
Of course! There were some evil men in the clergy! They would even defy a god! He travels as a simple man to help us relate to him better and so that those who are worthy will receive the true education of the divine realm.
I inhale sharply. I must teach all the holy scriptures so that any missing knowledge can be properly corrected.
[Sera-san?] I stop and see the village chief is looking at me.
[Oh, um yes, Village Chief-dono?]
[Ahaha, you don't need to address me so stiffly. Elded is fine.] I smile at him warmly.
[It seems this whole village has been blessed by the nature of the God of Benevolence. Truly an enviable place to live.] I see the village chief sigh and smile bitterly.
[So you've understood to that point. Looks like he's going to have a rough time.]
[Ah, please do not misunderstand, Village Chief-dono!] I hurriedly wave my hands to dismiss his fears.
[Oh?]
[Indeed! I would never do anything to upset this village or the divine plan of the Supreme One! Ah, but Ichiro-dono and I need supplies. I have 3 large silver coins to pay for this.] I see village chief furrow his brows at me as if he's trying to decide something. He sighs and smiles at me.
[Alright, Sera-san. Come with me, I can get you what you two need.] As we are getting the supplies I look around me at the villagers. They all seem to be incredibly healthy. Their skin seems so smooth, and they all talk to each other with smiles on their face. Truly a blessed place.
