THE RIDE HOME

Abigail stuffed herself full of the shrimp buffett at the dinner.

She had been unnerved all day since her fight with Frank Reagan.

Now that the air had been cleared between them she felt that she could eat heartily again.

She noticed the Commissioner sneaking glances at her as they mingled the rest of the evening, going their separate ways.

Now back in the black Ford Excursion she could feel the weight of the day pressing down on her.

She was exhausted.

The darkness was making her sleepy and momentarily she closed her eyes, her head leaning back against the seat.

The Commissioner looked over at Baker seated to his left.

She looked content, peaceful, her eyes closed.

That shimmering blue gown did wonders for her figure and he grinned in the darkness knowing she couldn't see him.

Her head nodded forward and he suddenly found her head leaning against his left shoulder.

She didn't stir.

But something stirred inside Frank Reagan.

Again he felt that overwhelming sense of protectiveness for her.

Baker was so self-assured. She could handle herself. An accomplished detective. Seemingly fearless in her own right.

But right now she seemed slightly vulnerable as she leaned up against him without realizing it.

He heard her sigh softly and realized she was really out.

The day's events had caught up to her.

He felt warmed as she continued laying against his shoulder. He let her continue sleeping against him, hating to disturb her.

No one was really paying attention to them in the SUV but he knew they would be stopping soon.

For as long as he could, he allowed her presence until he finally had to alert her.

He coughed quietly and the stir woke her up.

She pulled away and looked up at him sleepily.

She had fairly pale skin and as the streetlights illuminated the car inside, he could see a faint blush creep up on her skin.

He smiled softly down at her.

She averted her eyes looking somewhat embarrassed.

Abigail hated to put the Commissioner in any position that would make him appear anything but upstanding and she quickly straightened herself up.

Geez look at me. If someone had noticed us in the car…

They dropped off Lt Gormley and then Garrett leaving just the two of them with Jim driving.

When they pulled up to her apartment, Frank Reagan opened the door on his side and got out.

Knowing she was confined in her evening dress he held out a hand to help her step down out of the Excursion.

She smiled gratefully up to him.

"Jim, give me a minute, will you?" he said as he shut the door and walked Abigail to her apartment entrance.

"What's this?" she murmured quietly as they walked side by side.

"I just wanted to walk you inside," he said nonchalantly as if this was customary of him.

They walked inside the double doors and he walked them out of sight of the street.

Her apartment lobby was quiet and empty at this time of night.

She stood facing him and he wrapped his strong arms around her, hugging her tightly.

She felt incredibly warm all over.

The Commissioner then cupped his hands around her cheeks, brought her face to his, and kissed her softly.

She kissed him back, not feeling sleepy at all anymore.

The kiss was short, sweet, delicious.

He hugged her again and huskily whispered in her ear, "See you tomorrow, then?"

She grinned broadly wondering what the next day would be like…

Trying to sneak around with the Commissioner was like an undercover black ops mission at 1PP.

"Yes Sir," she replied, wishing he didn't have to go.

He looked down at her, holding her gaze for a moment.

Those blue-green ocean eyes of his.

I could get lost in those she thought and for what felt like the millionth time in the last two days, she blushed furiously, feeling his eyes looking her over.

He let her go from his arms, nodded, and walked back to the main entrance.
