Chapter 9

Tryouts

After a week of being grounded for going to Universal unsupervised, and another week of practicing, Matt and Sasha went to school tryouts.

Matt was trying out for the Track Team.

Sasha was trying out for the Cheer Squad.

Matt and a group of kids that were in the team the previous year along with a few new kids. Each kid would show if they got the skills to take part in Track and Field. When it was Matt's turn, he ran faster than any of the previous kids. Anne and Marcy were there to watch it and they cheered him on.

While that was happening, Sasha and the other girls trying out were showing off their skills. Sasha showed to remember the cheers by heart and seemed to be great with leading.

After every kid showed their skills, the coach would choose who would get a spot, and Matt was the first one chosen.

As Matt, Marcy, and Anne left for the front of the school to meet up with Sasha, who texted them in their group chat that she finished her tryout, which was a more private one, which was why neither Anne nor Marcy went to see it.

On the way, the three had a discussion.

"It was so awesome seeing you run like that," said Anne. "You were like the Flash."

"Yeah," said Marcy. "Where'd you learn how to run like that?"

"Years and years of extensive practice," Matt replied.

Flashback

Matt and Carol played Kinect Sports a lot during their early Elementary School days. The competitive twins they were, they used to play that game every day. Carol used to be really good at Track and Field, but Matt slowly improved and was able to move his feet much faster until he eventually started winning.

End of Flashback

Anne, Marcy, and Matt all make it to the front of the school, where they see Sasha waiting for them.

"How'd it go, Sasha?" asked Matt.

"That's Captain Waybright to you," Sasha replied.

"That's so awesome," said Anne.

"I'm not surprised," said Marcy. "You've got the skills of a leader."

"Well, I'll be sure to be at whatever football games happen at this school or in the state," said Matt. "If the team ends up going out of state for a game, I won't be there."

"So what you're saying is, your support for me is limited?" asked Sasha.

"What?" Matt reacted. "Of course not."

"Then why are you limiting going to in-state games?" asked Sasha.

Matt thought about what he'll say next for a second before saying, "I guess you're right. I was just being stupid."

"There you go," said Sasha. "Now, switching topics, how did your tryout go?"

"It went well," Matt replied. "I was even the first one to be chosen for the team."

Anne and Marcy just started cringing because of how the conversation just shifted like that.

"Anyway," said Sasha. "It's time for me to get home. I've still got a lot to do for our big Summer Sleepover."

"I've gotta get home too," said Matt. "I've gotta tell my parents about my accomplishment."
