Chapter 5
Missy lay in her bed at home, looking up at the ceiling and thinking. She had a lot on her mind, about what Suzie said to her, about how jealous she felt when she nice to Her. She was rich and could buy anything and everything she ever wanted at her young age. As cliché as it felt and sounded, she felt like she was missing something. Her heart burned in yearning each time and her tummy sank in, she was unable to eat and shuddered her words. She was never a person to be afraid of saying what was on her mind at any given time but things were starting to change and she could feel it.
The dance at the school was right around the corner before semester break and she knew exactly what she wanted. Missy gets up out of her bed and runs to the mirror; she stares at herself and crosses her arms. "Hello, Mozley." She says to herself in the mirror with a look of boredom on her face. "You wanna go to the Semester Dance with me?" She says in a very teasing way then starts laughing. "Did you think I was serious? Why would I possibly ask you to go the dance with me? You're a girl even if you don't dress or act like one. Even if I did want to ask a girl to the dance I could get a better girl to go with me than you." He sticks her tongue out at the mirror then smiles and turns away.
Missy turns back around with her face taking a 180 and she instead looked nervous and she took a deep breath. "Hey, Jennifer…" She clears her throat then looks at herself in the mirror. "I was wondering you know just hypothetically of course." She shrugs her shoulders and smirks at the mirror. "What would you say if a girl had asked you out to the dance?" Missy's face suddenly becomes full of surprise. "If it was your friend and you didn't have a date then why not? That is so like you Mozley."
She chuckles to herself and turns away again then turns back at the mirror with a face of fear and anxiety. "Moze, I know we're not super close and I've been mean to you for the better have of the years we've known each other down to the seconds. But I was wondering if you had anyone to go to the dance with." Her hand shakes as she lifts her hand up and touches the mirror with her hand on her hand over a bit of her own face. "If not then… Would you like to go to the dance with me?"
Missy breathes heavily then begins to laugh at herself a little bit and places her hand on her chest. This time she was laughing off the concept but laughing out of joy that she was able to get the words out of her mouth if only in the mirror. She knew what she was going to do now and she had do it as soon as possible before she lost her wit.
Moze on the other hand was at her house and looking at the video of herself and Suzie during the tryouts. She was becoming more and more impressed by how great Suzie skill was and how parallel they were in skill together. Moze looks at the time and decides that it is about time for her to go to bed; she was going to have a long day tomorrow. Only a couple of days until the dance and she had no signs of getting a date.
Moze gets into her bedtime clothing and crawls under the bed and looks up at the ceiling and had some things to think about herself. First was that feeling in her gut every time she thought of Suzie, the warmth in her belly she would feel when she even looked at grass. It was safe to say that she wasn't even comfortable with the idea of eating crabs anymore.
Even Lisa was acting very strangely lately and it was only getting more and more noticeable. She got extra chummy whenever Suzie seemed to be close by and she was trying to fix herself up. One day she tried to hide her allergy medicine and not need it as much but it only made it worse. Her nose was red and runny and by the time she finally uses the medicine anyone would swear she blew all the mucus out of her head. Unfortunately it was only beginning and she still had the sniffles for the rest of the day. Moze saw Lisa looking at herself in the mirror more and more, Moze always told Lisa she was a cute girl and not to worry about it. However Lisa didn't listen and she felt like she wasn't good enough but what exactly did she want to be good enough for all of a sudden?
And last but certainly not least was the strangest of all of them and that was Missy Meany. She wasn't being herself around Moze as much lately and she was being quieter around her. Moze couldn't help but ask her why she wasn't starting trouble and Missy didn't really have an answer. She would even give an occasional wave when they passed down the hallway and that easily made Ned and Cookie feel uncomfortable. None of them were used to Missy acting that way so Mozley knew something was up and she had to know what.
As Moze began to doze off that's when her phone rings, she blinks to wake herself up and grabs her phone. She looks at the phone suspiciously for a moment then answers it. "Hello? What are you doing calling me so late?" Moze asks. "Well, no actually I don't." Moze's eyes widen in surprise at what was said next. "Oh, you want us to go together… If you want to then sure, I'd like that." She agrees.
The next day was a bit surreal to Moze as she entered the school and the strange thoughts about the dance Friday was easily top priority in her mind. She gets to her locker and opens the door and places the books that she won't need inside.
"Hey Moze." Moze closes her locker slowly to see who it was.
"Oh, hey Missy." Moze gave her a smile and they both stood in silence for a moment before Missy continued.
"Look, Mozley. I know we're not super close and I've been mean to you for the better have of the years we've known each other down to the seconds. But I was wondering if you had anyone to go to the dance with." Missy asks.
"Oh, well I do actually." Moze says with a bit of an embarrassed smile.
"You do?" Missy's heart begins to beat faster. "Who are you going with?"
"She's going with me," Lisa says as she makes her way overly with a smile and leans her head on Moze's shoulder. "Neither of us had dates so I thought why not go together?"
"Was there something you were about to say?" Moze asks Missy.
Missy takes a couple of deep breathes. "Well I was going to say tough luck, but now I'm going to say something else. I'm going to say well at least when the losers go together they won't be crowding the punch bowl."
"That was really mean…" Moze says actually having gotten used to have Missy had been acting was surprised at what she just said.
"Oh well," Missy says and grins before turning her back and walking away from them. She picks up speed as she walks a bit faster, then faster and she finds herself power walking but not getting away fast enough. When she has passed the corner she takes off running and pushing through anyone in the way and gets into the girls restroom.
Missy gets inside to see that no one else was inside and the moment she sees the look on her face she can't help but let it out. She bursts into tears and grips the sink and lets her tears fall into it. Her face was red and if anyone were to come in there was no way that she could stop now. A downpour of emotions that she had never felt before in her life were all coming down on her at once and she didn't know how to deal with them.
However she didn't hear the door open and someone had arrived. She hears a footstep and knew that someone was going to see her like this and there was nothing she could do about it. All she could do is take her red and wet face and turn toward whoever it is and threaten them into keeping quiet. She grits her teeth together and turns toward whomever it was but her face immediately becomes vulnerable again.
Suzie stood looking at Missy with a look of concern. Missy's tears once again flowed freely and they both walked toward one another and embraced. Suzie held Missy in her arms and let her cry for as long as she needed to. Though Suzie had no idea why Missy was crying she was glad to be there for her. Missy was in an emotional pain that she had never felt before in her life and she because of that she couldn't deny how she felt about Mozley ever again.
