First Impression
Boris could not begin training his new team fast enough. Tom didn't have time to process his new role as team captain when he, Ian and two others were escorted from the competition room to another training area.
This room was by far larger then most others any of them had been in before. It was divided into two sections. The smaller of the sections had four metal cots and a table with four stools. An obvious indication the four teens would be doing everything together for some time to come.
The other side had two beydishes and plenty of open space. This was their training ground.
The windows, like usual, were high up out of anyone's reach and barred. The lights were evenly placed in rows hanging from the ceiling. The walls and floors were the same tired gray stone blocks like the rest of the Abbey.
Boris entered the room looking as impressed as always. Which he never was.
Upon his entrance the two Tom and Ian didn't know yet stood straight and saluted their dictator.
"Master Boris, sir," they said in unison.
Ian tried to silently snicker but everyone heard him.
"Thank you Demkov and Skyla. I hope your teammates can learn from your example."
The small praise had Skyla smile smugly. She loved to be complimented by Boris since she looked up to him as a father figure.
"Now to business." Boris paused until all four sets of eyes were on him. Tom nudged Ian for him to properly fall in line. "Time is short and there is a great deal of work to be done for you to all act as a team. That being the case this room is now your training space as well as living area. Each day you will be up by 4:30 prepared to begin the morning warm ups. A trainer as well as guards will be here to oversee everything. As Tom had won the tournament he is this team's captain. I expect all of you to obey his commands. Take the rest of the day to fetch your belonging and get to know one another. Tomorrow the training begins."
Demkov and Skyla once more saluted Boris as he turned to leave the group.
When he was gone Tom turned to face his team. "Hi, I'm Tom." He stretched his hand out for Demkov to shake.
Hn. The platinum blond boy huffed turning away from his captain. "I do not care who you are. Just stay out of the way of me and my sister."
The girl giggled. "Demkov doesn't like people. Especially you two for stealing his spot on the team. Though he is right and you need to stay out of our way. Tee hee!"
"Skyla hurry up. We need to collect out belongings for this...this experiment Master wants us to deal with.
"I'm coming brother." She turned back to Tom and Ian. "See you both soon. And don't forget the warning." There was something sinister about her smile as she skipped to catch up with her brother.
Tom and Ian looked at each other. Both had matching puzzled expressions.
"I have no idea what to make of those two," Tom said.
"Same. And what did that weird girl mean we stole his spot?"
"No idea. Maybe we'll find out later. For now Boris wanted us to learn from their example, so let's get our things too. I have a feeling we are going to be here for a long time."

When Tom and Ian returned with their belongings Demkov was already working up a sweat. He was running laps around the room.
Skyla was busy moving two of the cots away from the others. A clear sign the team was no together from the start.
Tom dropped his bag on a bed. A look of disappointment evident on his face. As captain he should try something to patch this rift. To start they all need to have a decent introduction of each other. Beyond that the bond will grow in time. At least he hoped it would.
"What are you thinking about?" Ian had known Tom long enough to recognize the intense pondering look in Tom's brown eyes.
"We've got to have a team greet. If we want to be a good team we've got to get to know each other."
"So what you're saying is you want Demmy and Skyla-la-la here for a little chit chat?" For once Ian was proving to not be a complete idiot. Though he might be risking his life if the others ever hear the nicknames he'd given them just now.
"Well yes. If you have any ideas on how to achieve that objective I'll hear them."
The mischievous grin on Ian's face was dangerous. Tom was regretting having asked the midget for help.
"Don't worry Tom, I got this covered." Ian opened his bag pulling something out before slithering up behind Skyla. In the blink of an eye he had both her arms trapped behind her back and Wyborg threatening pressed at her neck.
Demkov stopped his laps as his sister screamed. "Let her go!" He was now charging towards Ian.
"I don't plan on hurting her. Just agree to let the four of us talk and break the ice."
"And if I do not agree?"
"We tell Boris you're going against your team captain's wish. I don't think you want that," Ian replied.
"Very well. Let us get this talk over with."
Ian released Skyla from his hold. "Sorry about making you a pawn. It just seemed the easiest way to solve our problem.
There was no mistaking the hatred in Skyla's jade eyes as she snarled at Ian.
Tom finally joined the group. He had stayed back to observe the interaction and also because Ian had slightly horrified him with the hostage technique. Moves like that would surely keep a wedge buried deep between his team. Skyla's look alone was proof to that.
"Hi again. My name's Tom." Once again he was politely introducing himself to the team. His hand was yet again waiting for Demkov to shake it.
The blonde boy sparred it a quick glance of disgust. "I am Demkov. This is my little sister Skyla."
"Hi," she greeted with a small wave.
"And I'm Ian."
"Are we done now? I'd like to get back to my laps."
"I think we should get to know more about each other besides our names," Tom replied. "At least tell us about your blading style.I don't recall either of you summoning bit beasts in the competition."
Skyla giggled. "That's cause we didn't. We have them but Maser Boris asked us not to use them. They'd give us an unfair advantage."
"Are you saying that you're stronger then us?" Ian asked really confused.
"Well not me personally. Demkov is though. His loose was just a fluke."
"What partners do you have?" Tom asked.
"I'm Buzzborg's controller. He's a fire wasp. He is best for attacks with decent defense and endurance."
"I own the dark dragon Draborg. He excels in all areas of battle."
"You both have 'borg' bit beasts?!" Ian asked. "Those are reserved for favorites of Boris."
"So why do you have one?" Skyla shot back. "Surely Master Boris doesn't favor you at all. So tell us how Wyborg ended up in your posession."
"Call it luck," Ian answered. "So what have you both done to get in Boris's good graces?"
"That is not your concern. Skyla this conversation is over." Demkov left the group to resume his practice.
"I wont go into details but Master Boris saved Demkov and myself a few years back. We work hard to pay off that life debt we owe. Our bit beasts are how he thanked us for our obedience and work." Skyla took off to join her brother running laps.
Again Tom and Ian were left to figure how they felt about the two siblings. There were still more questions then answers about them.
Next time: Skyla hinted that she and Demkov owe Boris their lives. Next tale will reveal more about them and how Boris entered their lives.
