Avatar the last Airbender/ The Legend of Korra What If

(Disclaimer I do not own Atla or Lok)

(Inspired by Lyondor's story "The Avatar and the Fire Nation Princess" from archive of our own)

(This is an adaptation fanfiction with a different direction for the story that I am writing)

After what happened in the Royal Gardens today between Azula and Korra, Princess Ursa took Korra to the healer to get her treated for getting hit in the face. Luckily the injury wasn't too bad but Korra was still upset for getting hit in the face by Azula. Princess Ursa felt guilty for what happened today. She should've known something like this would happen, but she could never imagine that her own daughter would go as far to try to kill Korra. When she saw Azula ignite a flame preparing to strike Korra with it she knew that she had to stop her before it was too late. As the healer finished treating Korra, Princess Ursa sat next to her and began speaking to her.

"Korra are you feeling any better?" Ursa asked

Korra was too shy to say anything and only nodded in response. Ursa placed a hand on her shoulder to comfort Korra and said.

"I'm so sorry this happened to you, I should've done something sooner. I never thought my daughter would do something like this." Ursa explained

Korra then finally, replied saying.

"It's not your fault Princess Ursa, I was the one who wanted to stop Azula from fighting with her brother Zuko and I only did it, because I was concerned about her." Korra said

"I appreciate you doing that, but I still feel terrible that you ended up getting hurt in the process." Ursa said

"Please don't blame yourself princess I know you're looking out for me, but I can take care of myself." Korra said

"I know you can Korra, but I only want to protect you, because you mean so much to me ever since you came into our lives. I swear I will never let Azula hurt you ever again." Ursa said

Princess Ursa then took Korra in a hug and Korra returned the hug too, because she knew Ursa meant what she said and that meant the world to her very much. Korra wanted to say more to Ursa, especially about how she's very worried about Azula and wanting to understanding why she has been acting so different the last few days. But for now Korra decided not to say anything at least for now and wait until later to tell her. After the two left the healer they went back to the palace and found Prince Zuko sitting alone by himself as he was waiting for his mother to return. When Zuko saw the two approaching him he walked up to them and said.

"Mother is Korra alright?" Zuko said

"Yes sweetie Korra is alright, thankfully she didn't get hurt too badly by your sister." Ursa replied

Zuko then turned his attention to Korra and said

"Korra I'm really sorry for what Azula did to you?"

Korra replied saying

"It's not your fault Prince Zuko I shouldn't have disobeyed Azula and made her angry." Korra said

"Korra you did not do anything wrong, you were just trying to do the right thing and wanted to stop me and Azula from fighting." Zuko explained

"Thank you Prince Zuko." Korra replied

"You're welcome Korra." Zuko said

Princess Ursa smiled at this, because she was happy to see that both Korra and Zuko got a long very well despite everything that has happened today. However, Ursa knew she needed to handle the situation with Azula. Ursa then spoke to her son.

"Zuko would you mind keeping Korra company I have to speak with your sister about what she did today. I'll be right back." Ursa said

"Yes mother." Zuko said

"Good I won't be long." Ursa said

After that Princess Ursa left the room and proceeded towards to her daughter's room to speak with her. During that time Prince Zuko and Korra sat quietly for a few minutes not knowing what to talk about until Korra finally, decided to ask Zuko something.

"Prince Zuko can I ask you something" Korra said

"Sure what is it Korra?" Zuko said

"Why do you and Azula fight so much?" Korra asked

Zuko was hesitant to answer this question, but eventually replied by saying.

"To be honest it's complicated." Zuko said

"What do you mean?" Korra asked

"Well Azula has always had it easy and everyone including my father praised her for being better than me. No matter how hard I try I can never catch with Azula in terms of our fire bending skills." Zuko explained

Korra was well aware of how Zuko's father seemed to favor Azula over him, but she didn't know how the rest of the Fire nation also agreed to this too.

"Is that why you do not like spending time with her?" Korra said

"Yes, I feel like whenever I spend time with Azula I know she'll do anything to make me look bad in front of everybody." Zuko said

Korra's next question was going to be tough to ask, but she had to bring it up in order to understand the situation better.

"I need to ask you something important and it's alright if you don't want to answer, but I have to know something." Korra said

"Alright." Zuko said

"Why did you say that Azula is sick in the head?" Korra asked

Zuko's eyes widened when she asked this question.

"I didn't mean what I said, I was just so angry with Azula that it just slipped out." Zuko said

"But Azula was really upset by it when you said that to her. If you didn't mean to say it then why did you bring it up in the first place?" Azula asked

Zuko could tell that Korra was really concerned about this so he decided to tell her the truth.

"Alright, the truth is sometimes I believe there is something wrong with Azula, she acts like a completely different person that has no empathy towards others. Sometimes I fear that one day she'll do something horrible and become a monster of her own making." Zuko explained

Korra was shocked to hear this, she started thinking back to the incidents with Azula, especially today and wondered if that's why Azula became upset in the first place. If this true then it all makes sense now why Zuko called her sick in the head. The only thing that Korra kept thinking about was if Zuko believes that Azula will turn into a monster why doesn't anybody try to help her in order to prevent that from happening.

At that same moment Korra and Zuko saw Princess Ursa walking with Azula. As the two approached them Ursa spoke to her daughter.

"Azula don't you have something you want to say to Korra." Ursa said

Azula nodded and without any hesitation looked at Korra and said

"Korra I'm really sorry about what I did earlier. I shouldn't have slapped you and I regret threatening to burn you please forgive me." Azula explained

Korra could tell Azula was still upset about earlier and judging by her expression she looked really guilty about the whole thing.

"I forgive you mistress." Korra said

Azula's eyes widened when hearing this.

"You do?" Azula asked

"Yes I do, I'm not angry and I don't like holding grudges against people." Korra said

"Thank you Korra." Azula said

"You're welcome mistress." Korra replied

Princess Ursa was glad to see that Korra was able to forgive Azula what happened earlier today and once that was done, she decided to show her children the message that uncle Iroh delivered in a scroll. Ursa read what the message said to Zuko, Azula, and Korra and it reads.

"If the city is magnificent as its wall, Ba sing se must be something to behold. I hope you all may see it someday. If we do not burn it to the ground first."

As Ursa finished reading through the scroll, Zuko and Azula were amazed by this. Korra was also intrigued by this too, because even though she's heard of stories of these places she has never got to travel to them, because Korra spent most of her life living in the South Pole before being captured by the Fire nation and forced into slavery. In that same moment Princess Ursa also told her children that uncle Iroh sent them gifts too.

"For Zuko, a pearl dagger from the general who surrendered when we broke through the outer wall. Note the inscription and the superior craftsmanship." Ursa said

"Never give up without a fight." Zuko said as he read the inscription on the dagger.

"And for Azula, a new friend. She wears the latest fashion for earth kingdom girls." Ursa said as she handed the doll to Azula.

Azula wasn't happy getting the earth kingdom doll, because it wasn't as interesting as Zuko's dagger. Korra could tell by her facial expression that she was disappointed by the gift. Azula at first thought about burning the doll and was about to do it when she looked at Korra. Even though Azula apologized for hurting Korra she still felt bad for doing it and didn't think saying sorry was enough. But then a thought came into her head as she looked at the doll.

"Here I think you should have the doll instead of me." Azula said as she gave the doll to Korra.

Korra couldn't believe it Azula was doing something out of the kindness of her heart.

"You really mean it?" Korra asked

"Yes I think you'll be more happy with it than I will." Azula said

Korra smiled and replied.

"Thank you, mistress, I am truly grateful for this wonderful gift you have given me." Korra said

Azula smiled too and answered.

"You're welcome Korra." Azula said

Princess Ursa saw the whole thing and was really happy that her daughter did that for Korra. Perhaps she was wrong about her daughter and maybe there was hope for her after all. While this was going on Zuko was playing with his new knife pretending to fight off enemies as. Korra and Azula notice this and couldn't help but giggle at this. Normally Azula would've made fun of her brother but for some reason she didn't feel like. She started to wonder if her interactions with Korra or her mother from earlier had something to do with it, but she's not quite sure.

"I really hope uncle and cousin Lu Ten come home soon." Zuko said as he stopped playing with his dagger.

"I hope so too." Azula said

Zuko was surprised by this as he never seen Azula show any concern for anyone else accept herself.

"I worry about them too, but I'm sure they will be home soon safe and sound once they complete their mission in Ba Sing Se." Ursa said

"But mother what if they do not come home. What if something horrible happens?" Azula asked

Princess Ursa could tell Azula was really concerned and she replied to her by saying.

"Azula I promise you everything will be alright, we just have hold on to hope that your uncle and cousin will return safely from the battle." Ursa said

While this was going on Korra watched as the conversation happened. She also began to worry about the safety of her mother and father. It had been a year since the Fire nation took them away from her. Everyday Korra wishes she could see them again and tell them how much she missed them. Korra feels responsible for not trying hard enough to protect her village from the Fire nation soldiers that invaded the South Pole. As Korra went into deep thought about her family she tried to remember the promise she made to her parents about being brave no matter what. She also held on to the doll around her arms to bring comfort to herself in order to help make her feel better and not worry too much about her family.

Throughout the rest of the day everything went as it normally did, Azula had Korra do some chores by cleaning her room and then the royal family had dinner in the dining room. Korra was in her regular spot tied to the door. She overheard the conversation going on with Prince Ozai explaining to his children that he plans on having them show off their Fire bending skills to Fire lord Azulon during a meeting with him tomorrow night in order to prove themselves as worthy future soldiers of the Fire nation.

"Remember that Fire lord Azulon expects nothing but the best, you must prove yourselves that your capable of powerful fire bending." Ozai explained

"Yes father." Both Azula and Zuko said

"Both of you represent the future of the Fire nation so do not fail me." Ozai said

"Of course father." Azula said showing confidence in her voice

"Excellent Azula I know I can count on you." Ozai said

Ozai then turn his attention to Zuko.

"I expect you to not make a fool out of me in front of Fire lord Azulon do you understand?" Ozai asked

"Yes father." Zuko said feeling uncertain about himself.

"Good." Ozai said

Korra still felt bad for Zuko and wished she could do something to make him feel better, but couldn't do that, because she didn't want to cause a scene in front of the royal family. She still feared the Prince Ozai, because he had no empathy towards his family or those who served him. Korra wishes someone would fight back and stand up against him, but she knew that Prince Ozai possessed so much power and that nobody would dare even try to stand up to him. After dinner Azula untied Korra from the door and Korra proceeded to help the servants clean up like she normally did and once that was done she went straight back to Azula's room. Azula was already prepared for bed in her night gown and she tied Korra to the side of the bed as usual. As the two prepared to go to sleep Azula noticed Korra grabbing the doll she gave to her earlier and holding it as a way to make her feel more comfortable and safe. As Azula watched Korra fall asleep with the doll in her arms she couldn't help but smile at this. Was it possible that something had changed Azula or could it be something else entirely. Despite the talk she had with her mother Azula still wasn't sure and doesn't know whether she should tell Korra about it or not. Either way she decides not to dwell on it for now and decides to get some rest.
