I sat up in the hospital bed, eating and thinking to myself while Fang stared out the window, his expression unreadable as usual. After I finished and set my tray aside, I laid back down, trying to fall back asleep. I tossed and turned all night before I finally fell asleep. When I woke up it was dark again and everyone had left. Struggling and wincing at the pain in my leg, I managed to stand and find the clothes Iggy must've brought, laying on the table beside the bed. I changed (with difficulty) and carefully pulled the I.V out of my arm. I managed to limp to the door to find Fang sitting in the hallway, his head bowed and his arms around his knees. "Fang?" I whispered softly and limped over to him. He didn't look up so I carefully sat next to him with my bad leg stretched out in front of me. "Fang?" I tried again, placing my hand lightly on his arm. This time his head snapped up and his obsidian eyes met mine immediately. They were glistening slightly but he blinked and they cleared.
"Max? You're okay?" He asked, his voice filled with awe. I gave him a look.
"Of course? I'm fine." Now I was seriously confused. "Did something happen? Fang what's going on? Where's the flock?" He just sat there staring at me, the shock and relief written clearly across his face. I shifted uncomfortably under his gaze. "Fang answer m-" I was cut off by his lips covering mine. I debated pushing him back until my brain went fuzzy and all I could feel was him. There was no room for rational thought as I gave in and kissed him back with all the love I'd pushed aside since he'd left. The kiss lasted several moments before something cold hit my back and I pulled away in surprise. We had slid across the wall and Fang now had me pinned to the floor. We stared at each other a moment, catching our breath before Fang slowly sat up, bringing me with him. I opened my mouth to say something, then shut it and scrambled to my feet, hurrying back to my room without a backwards glance. Once safely inside, I sat on the bed, ran a hand through my greasy hair and sighed. I needed a shower badly and I also figured it would be a good way to think, so I walked over to the bathroom connected to the hospital room and started the shower.

It was just a little before four in the morning when I heard the yelling of doctors and pounding of feet coming towards Max's room which I was sitting next to. Figuring they'd just pass by, I laid my head against the wall. I was wrong. Ten seconds later the doctors burst into Max's room with me on their heels, now fully awake. The first thing I noticed was Nudge sobbing. The next thing nearly brought me to my knees when it finally registered. A strange monotone beeping was coming from the monitor beside Max: She was flat lining. Without a word I went and gathered Nudge into my arms, trying to calm her down. The doctors worked speedily to try and save Max but it wasn't looking good. After a moment a nurse turned and asked me to try and talk to her or something. Anything to get her to respond. I passed Nudge to Ig and went to Max's side, taking her hand in mine. "God knows I don't usually say things like this but…" I took a deep breath. "Max, please come back to me. I'm sorry I left. I know I hurt you and I was wrong and stupid, but you can't just leave us. The flock needs you. If you hate me, fine but hang in there, for them. I love you Max. I'm sorry." I finished and a single tear rolled down my cheek just before the pulse on the monitor returned to normal. I kept my hand in hers until the doctors left saying she may or may not wake up. When they were all gone, I turned to the flock. "You guys go home, get some real sleep and I'll call when she wakes up." They all reluctantly left the room and I followed to sit in the hall again. A brief glance at my watch told me I'd been in there for around two hours, making the current time six o'clock in the morning. I sighed and rested my head on my knees and held back the tears. Max slept all that day and most of the next. When she finally woke up, I was back in the empty hallway. It was about eight thirty at night and the hospital was fairly quiet, leaving me to my thoughts. I was so worried… What if she never woke up? I didn't want her last conscious thought of me to be a negative one. At first I didn't think I'd actually heard her, but when she sat next to me and placed a hand on my arm, I looked up in disbelief. "Max? You're okay?" I barely managed to hide all the emotion building inside of me.
"Of course? I'm fine." She didn't know what happened. I would tell her later but at that moment I was so consumed with relief that I couldn't stop myself. She was saying something but I didn't hear her. I cut her off mid-sentence with my lips, kissing her intensely. All the emotions I'd been pushing down since I'd left filled me again. This wasn't like when I kissed her at the lake. It was like everything clicked into place as her arms locked around me and I gently laid her on her back. The sudden cold must've scared her (or so I hoped) because she pulled back quickly and we held each other's gaze for a long time, breathing heavily. She started to speak after I helped her up but then she scrambled away, leaving me wondering again.
