"Soph where are you?" I asked into the phone. I was standing outside my parents little walk up townhouse freezing my ass off.

"Just go in without me, I'm like five minutes away." She said, but I didn't believe her because I heard the sink shut off in the background.

"You haven't even left yet have you?" I accused.

"Okay so I'm running late, I'll take a cab and be there in no time."

"More like in an hour" I muttered, "I can't face mom and dad alone."

"Boohoo, man up Jane! You are a grown woman; you should be able to stand up to your parents." Her pep talk gave me confidence.

"You're right, what do I care what they think? I'm a grown ass woman."

"Yeah! Besides if Mom starts going at you, we'll deflect onto Jake."

"He's coming tonight?" I asked surprised.

"Yup," Sophie said popping the P. "Mom forced him into it."

"Of course, I'll see you in a bit. Please hurry, I can't handle her by myself for too long."

I knocked on the tall black door with the gold lion knocker; it reminded me of medieval times. Even in the cold my hands were sweating, I wiped them on my pant leg. I tried to calm myself by taking deep breaths; my mom was like a dog she could sense fear.

"Baby!" She exclaimed pulling me into a big hug. "Your face… My poor baby."

"Mom, I'm fine. You can hardly see anything anymore." I said pulling out of the hug.

"Yeah anymore, how did you look a couple weeks ago?" She asked my crossing her arms. I decided to play it off.

"It honestly wasn't that bad, a couple of bruises at most. You know how people exaggerate." I pulled off my jacket and hung it in the hallway closet.

I hadn't been home in a couple months; I missed it. My mother had this thing for changing the furniture constantly, so every time I came back home from school there was always new things in the house.

"How's dad?" I asked changing the subject before she could start in on me.

"He's fine." I heard a deep voice say from behind me. I turned from the hallway and entered the living room.

"Hey dad!" I said giving him a hug; I wasn't what I would call a 'Daddy's girl' we just got on really well. He had a few more grey hairs from last time I saw him. That was one of the many things I didn't understand about my parents. My dad was going grey as most people his age do, but my mom didn't have a single grey hair. I knew for a fact she didn't dye her hair either; I was hoping I got the hair genes from her.

"How is school?" He asked me pouring me a scotch even though I hated the drink.

"Great, the school's bigger than the one in Boston but I like it. My professors are really good." Which was a lie; they were mostly boring old men with big bellies.

"Where's this new boyfriend of yours, honey?" My mom asked sitting down on the sofa beside me.

Thankfully someone knocked on the door which saved me from having to answer the question. I hadn't thought of anything good to say about why Kevin wasn't at dinner. I wasn't even sure if we were still going out; I didn't handle apologies well. And by that I mean I hated saying I was sorry so I rarely did.

I was cautiously sipping my scotch, wishing it was a rum and coke when I heard "Good evening Ms. Murphy." I bolted from the couch and ran to the entryway, what was Kevin doing here?

"Kevin?" I asked as I saw him standing holding flowers standing behind him was Sophie who had the biggest grin on her face.

"Hello Jane." He said quietly. I almost melted when he said my name, that and Kevin was wearing a tie. He looked so good in that tie.

"Jane move out of the way, we can't have a conversation in the foyer." My mom scolded as Kevin handed her a small handful of roses. Kevin and I lingered as my mom and Sophie moved into the living room.

"What are you doing here Kevin" I didn't bother to hide the smile that was on my face.

"Sophie and Tommy tagged teamed me." His whispered not wanting my parents to hear in the next room.

"I'm glad you came." I gave him a quick peck on the lips to show I was sorry and wasn't pissed anymore. I knew Kevin was still mad because he just nodded at me, but he held my hand as we walked into the living room; that was a good sign right?

"Kevin, Nice to see you again." My father said standing up and shaking Kevin's hand.

"Can we get you something to drink Kevin?" My mom asked sweetly, behind her Sophie pointed to my father's drink.

"Uh, a beer?" Kevin asked. I saw my mother purse her lips slightly; my mother always said you could tell a lot about a person. Her logic was the fancier the drink the fancier the person.

"Coming right up," she said getting up from the couch.

My father was a man of extremely little words; which is why he and my mom got along so well. He said close to nothing and she said more than enough. So we sat in silence till my mom came back from the kitchen.

"Is Jake still coming?" Sophie asked sipping her scotch. She looked quite extravagant with her legs crossed in her cocktail dress sitting in the black high-backed arm chair.

"He should be." My father said.

"Of course Jake is co-" she was interrupted by the doorbell. She looked at us with a pointed look.

"Speak of the devil and the devil shall appear." I said.

"Jane, don't compare Jake to the devil." She said reprimanding me.

"If the shoe fits." I muttered under my breath. I must have said it loud enough because my father chuckled.

"Jake! How's my baby doing?" She cooed from the foyer.

"I'm fine ma, is everyone here?"

"Yup, and waiting on your spoiled ass." Sophie called out.

Jake walked into the living room wearing a suit and bow-tie, I suppressed the urge to roll my eyes it was dinner with our parents not the Oscars.

Jake took a seat in one of the arm chairs next to Sophie. I wish I could say I was as close to Jake as Sophie was but I wasn't, not really. You'd think that since Jake is the oldest and Sophie was the youngest that they would have nothing in common and wouldn't get along, but for whatever reason that wasn't the case. Sophie and Jake got along like a band of robbers, always laughing at some weird inside joke. Sometimes I was envious of their relationship, but it was similar to what I had with Dylan and Luke.

Jake and my father quickly got into how the restaurant was doing. I remember the years of convincing from Jake it took my father to finally give up running the place. While my parents were distracted by the perfection of everything that is Jake I finally got a chance to talk with Kevin for the first time since the fight.

"Thank you for coming." I whispered quietly. Kevin simply nodded, showing me he hadn't forgiven me completely. I sighed inwardly, sucking up my pride I knew I had to apologize.

"Kevin I'm sorry I brought up this dinner in front of your mom, I should have waited." I grabbed his hand and held it in mine. "Forgive me?"

"Forgive you for what?" Damn my mother and her supersonic hearing.

"Forgive me for forcing him to come to this dinner." Sophie laughed at my remark while my mother glared at me. I found it ironic that they thought I was just making some sarcastic remark when in all seriousness I was sorry for making Kevin come tonight.

"Well now that everyone's here we can take it to the dining room to eat."

The rest of the night consisted of lots and lots of food, a small village could have survived for a month off of the amount of food we ate. Everyone suffered; my father trying to give business tips to Jake, which made Jake talk more and more about the success of the restaurant. My mother who asked Kevin question upon question about his life and his future goals which, to my surprise, Kevin handled them quite well. I was thrown question after question about mine and Kevin's relationship, to which I tried to come up with answer that didn't make me sound like a slut. Then there was Sophie who was left alone pretty much the entire night, the lucky bitch.

"Jane!" I turned at the front gate and watched Sophie race down the steps towards Kevin and I. "I'm going out to a new bar downtown with my friends, I'll be back late."

"See ya!" I called out to her retreating figure.

Me and Kevin walked by to the apartment in silence. I hadn't had another chance to apologize at dinner, my mom's constant barrage of questions never gave me a chance. I didn't know if Kevin had accepted my small apology until are hands brushed up against each other and he grabbed my hand and held it. He didn't let go until we were in the safety of my apartment.

As I entered the living room behind Kevin I still wasn't sure what to say, although I knew I had to say something. "I'm sorry." I said quietly looking up at him.

He looked down at me with his deep brown eyes, "I know, I'm sorry too."

I felt a huge grin come in my face realizing he wasn't mad anymore. I walked over and wrapped my arms around his waist squeezing tight.

"I should have never dragged out our relationship in front of your family, it was stupid and I'm sorry."

"Stop saying you're sorry, I forgave you about four hours ago." He said, his breathe on my neck.

I smiled into his chest. "Can I ask you something?"

"Go ahead."

"Why did you leave my apartment so early that night?" I pulled out of the hug so I could look at his faced.

"Jimmy called with a new venture of his; he wanted to get started with it right away." Kevin explained to me.

"Does this new venture have anything to do with Louie downtown?" I asked.

"Yeah, speaking of Jimmy wanted me to ask you if we could use your apartment."

"Use my apartment?" I asked confused, "Use it for what?"

"Jimmy, me and Whitey need a place to set up our booking service." Kevin said with a slight smile.

"You guys got a booking service?" I asked feeling proud of Kevin.

"Yeah, so does this mean we can use ya place?" he asked full of hope that I would say yes.

"No way! Not if Whitey is gunna be there, I do not want that man anywhere near my apartment." I didn't want another fight to start so I added, "Why don't you guys ask Joanie, I'm sure she'd say yes."

"You really think so? I dunno, Jimmy wasn't too sure she'd want to."

"Well she might need a bit of convincing," I admitted, "Why don't you guys offer to pay her, Joanie is never going to turn down money."

Kevin nodded taking in what I said, I pulled out of his grasp and took of my jacket which I had yet to take off.

"Kevin," I called out softly walking towards my bedroom. My voice broke him out of his thoughts as he turned to look at me. "Sophie isn't going to be back till late, and I think we have some making up to do." I looked at him with a dirty smile as he walked towards me and led me to my room.
