A/N: Ok, so this is really the last thing I'm going to write for this story. I want it to go on, but it's really time to bring it to an end. So I decided to give you all a little more sweetness with a cherry on top before I closed it out for good! Please enjoy and review :)
Epilogue
Julie sat in bed propped up by a few pillows and twirled the diamond ring on her left hand as she observed Bucky. She took in the peaceful calm of his blue eyes, the well manicured stubble of his chin and the short hair that she'd objected to at first. She was shocked, and mildly disappointed, when he'd shown up two week ago with shorn locks. But then he'd explained to her how it felt like he was finally letting go of the last bit of the Winter Soldier and how it made him feel just a little more connected to the old Bucky. How could she argue with that? Besides, she came to realize how well the style accentuated his strong jaw line, something that she very much appreciated.
Bucky could feel her eyes on him but he paid her no mind. All of his attention was glued to the little bundle he held in his arms as he sat beside Julie's bed. He leaned forward slightly and rested his elbows on his knees, his eyes roving over the tiny face. Wordlessly, he shifted the baby into his left arm, his large vibranium hand cradling the head while his right arm reached out for Julie. She took the proffered hand and slipped her on palm against his.
"She's perfect," Bucky breathed out.
"Yeah she is. She's got your blue eyes," Julie observed as the baby's tiny orbs opened and crystal blues stared up at him.
She continued to watch father and daughter take each other in, mesmerized by the sweetness of the moment.
"So how was your day with the new recruits?"
"Good," he replied. "A few need some work in a big way, but there are two that show a lot of promise. It'll be fun training them."
"I'm glad you're enjoying it."
"I really am. Though I think Sam misses me," he laughed.
"Let's not pretend that's one sided," Julie gave him a smirk.
Bucky didn't reply but the small smile that tugged at the corner of his lips wasn't lost on her.
"I think I freaked everyone out this morning," he admitted suddenly.
"What do you mean?" She ran her thumb over the back of his warm hand.
"When you called…I might have panicked momentarily. I don't think the recruits were used to seeing a CO like that," Bucky laughed sheepishly.
"You panicked?! Imagine how I felt! You're at work…I'm all alone aside from Watson. I get out of bed, take two steps to the bathroom and suddenly my water breaks!"
He squeezed her hand gently, "Sorry I wasn't there doll."
"It's ok. You came fast enough."
"Yeah I definitely tested the limits on my bike, that's for sure."
"James!"
Bucky glanced over at her at last, finally able to tear his eyes away from the now sleeping baby.
"Sorry sweetheart, I promise to be more careful," he brought their hands up to his mouth and placed a soft kiss on her fingers, a smile playing on his lips.
"By the way, Sarah called while you were sleeping."
"Oh yeah? When are they all coming by?"
"Tomorrow morning I think. She wanted to give us some time alone together first."
"Well that's thoughtful."
"Mmmhmmm. She said she drove by the house to feed Watson and looks like the nursery is all done. So no more construction when we get back."
"Oh thank God!"
"Thought that would make you happy."
"Wait, she drove by? It's like a ten minute walk from her house."
"Not the way Sarah walks…probably more like an hour," Bucky mumbled the last half of the sentence under his breath.
"James Barnes, the woman is five months pregnant! And with two rambunctious boys already at home. Cut her some slack!"
She swatted his arm playfully as Bucky chuckled.
"Ok, ok, I'm sorry. I'll be nice."
Just then, a soft knock sounded on their hospital door and a nurse walked in.
"Hi Mrs. Barnes! I'm just going to check on a few things here. How are you feeling?"
"Exhausted."
She laid her head back on a pillow and turned to look over at Bucky. His attention was firmly back on the baby. The setting sun was streaming in through the window behind him, casting an etherial glow over the pair. The tiny babe suddenly yawned and opened her eyes again. He took in a sharp breath of wonder as she turned her head and nuzzled her soft cheek against his vibranium finger.
"But happy," Julie continued.
The nurse smiled at the new family.
"So do I finally get to know her name?"
Bucky looked at Julie sidelong who smiled at him encouragingly. His gaze drifted back to his daughter. His heart felt full and a content smile curved his lips. He felt a joy fill him that he never thought he would feel or ever deserve to have.
"Rebecca," he breathed.
A/N: I'm not crying…you're crying!
PLEASE leave a review and let me know what you thought of the epilogue and of the story as a whole! We made it to OVER 100 reviews after the last chapter! YAY! Starting out, I felt SO rusty with my writing and I never thought I'd get here. So a massive thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout this process.
After reading your reviews I will definitely be writing another BuckyxOC story! I am probably going to take a short breather (maybe a week, maybe a few more) so I don't get burned out. But honestly…my fingers are itching to write so I don't know how long I'll actually be able to stay away. I do have a few things to take care of that I've been putting on the back burner though so if you don't follow me, please check back (weekly?) to look out for my new post. As a little teaser, the new story will be titled Friends.
As always, a big thank you to my reviewers: .2023, MidnightStar, Thorunnironside, Alices Rabbit, Alpinelover, and Guest.
MidnightStar: Haha! Yay! I love it! I'm sad too, but already looking forward to writing the next one. Thank you again SO much for supporting me with a review of every chapter! Your comments have been really encouraging! Sending love!
Thorunnironside: Same here! It's so bittersweet that it's done. I think I've been more invested in this story than I have in any other that I've written in the past tbh. Thank you SO much for all of the love and support that you've shown! Reviewers like you make all the time and energy spent writing worth it! I'm glad that everything turned out ok with you and your baby! I had spotting with both of my pregnancies too and even though logically I knew it wasn't unusual it's terrifying! I also have a healthy 5yo and (almost) 2 yo now — both of whom are more than a handful! LOL.
Alices Rabbit: I know! I feel the exact same way. It's so hard to put this story to rest. But I'm glad you've enjoyed reading it as much as I've enjoyed writing it. And wow, I really appreciate you saying that. I felt like it really took me a minute to get back into the swing of things with writing and the first several chapters I was really doubting myself. So your words really mean a lot! Sending you love!
Alpinelover: Thank you so much for your constant reviews! It's bittersweet for me too. But I probably won't stay away for long before I start on the next story…andddddd I was already thinking about including Alpine! LOL
Guest: I know…but all good things must come to an end! Thank you for all of your amazing reviews! And it's really nice to see my hard work being recognized and appreciated! I will definitely be writing more so please check back frequently…I probably won't be able to stay away for long haha.
