Part 13: Distractions Along the Way
Turning back to Black Mask, Red Robin looked at him with scorn. He gave a decidedly impish grin when an idea came to him. Since everyone was tied up except Black Mask, Red Robin tied him with the chains that Black Mask used on him. He then hoisted him upside down and made sure the chain was secure.
"You should not have come back to Gotham. And you should not have trusted Nightwing. Once a bat, always a bat."
Red Robin then alerted the police and went on his way.
It wasn't long until Red Robin could hear the sirens in the distance to pick up Black Mask. He took off with his grappling hook, trying to get to higher ground so he could use his wings to glide. Red Robin hadn't gone far when he heard gunfire and a bullet hit one of his wings. He looked down to see someone firing at him.
'You know, you just had to ruin my night, didn't you," Red Robin commented. He quickly landed on a nearby roof. The person kept firing at him but kept missing the target. He sounded desperate.
"I'm going to kill you! I'm not going back!" Eddie Strake exclaimed.
'So that's what happened to Strake,' Red Robin stated. The police had been searching for him for weeks. He was one of the escapees of Black Gate. He should have stayed hidden. Red Robin tossed a bird-a-rang, knocking the gun out of his hand. As Red Robin swooped down, he landed a punch across his jaw. "You should have stayed in prison Strake. It's a lot safer." Red Robin tied him up and left him for the police to find. Then continued his journey to get his motorcycle. Red Robin was once again trying to get to higher ground when his line was snapped. He had to twist his body to get into a glide when a knife slid along his rib cage.
"Aaggh!" Red Robin landed roughly on another rooftop of a 12-story building, a few blocks closer to his destination. Then another knife was thrown, pinning one of my wings. Red Robin had to disconnect them from his back, or he would have been skewered by a third. He moved just in time and scrambled to his feet and spied the assassin.
"Dagger! What are you doing here in Gotham?"
"Fulfilling a contract."
"Ra's is retired."
"Ra's Al Ghul didn't hire me," Dagger said as he tossed another knife.
Red Robin pulled out his bow staff as he dodged out of the way. The dagger skimmed along the back of my left thigh. He had to keep from being hamstrung. "What happened to your aim Dagger, losing your eyesight?"
"Hardly." Dagger smiled as he backed Red Robin into a corner where he couldn't escape.
'Should have gone the other direction,' Red Robin thought to himself. With his grappling line cut he couldn't get out of the reach of those daggers. 'Or maybe I had.' Red Robin raced straight for the wall and using his feet, he pushed off of it and leaped into the air leaping over Dagger and landing behind him, surprising him. Red Robin immediately struck him in the jaw, felling him to his knees.
'Typical glass jaw,' Red Robin zip tied Dagger. He then attached his line and lowered Dagger close to the street. He cut his line free and then Red Robin went to pick up his wings. They were ruined when he saw the damage that had been done. 'Great, now that's two modes of transportation ruined. Looks like I'm left with just my feet. Looks like I'm rooftop hopping.'
Red Robin pulled up a map on his gauntlet's connection to the bat cave. 'Damn, I have to go several blocks out of my way just to find a rooftop close enough to get me back in the right direction. My bike isn't on a remote control otherwise I'd call for it. I'm going to have to rectify that. Looks like the route takes me through Chinatown.'
Robin, Nghtwing, and Red Hood headed back out to Gotham. They took Nightwing's old van so they could pick up Red Robin and place his motorcycle in the back.
"Red Robin said something about his cycle on the other side of town," Robin reminded them. He opened up the GPS locator and found where Red Robin had parked the bike. It was still in the same place.
Nightwing and Red Hood followed Robin to Red Robin's bike. Once all three got there, there was one noticeable difference. Red Robin wasn't around.
"Now that's alarming, very alarming." Red Hood commented.
"Where the hell is he?" Robin asked.
