Short chapter, sorry!
CHAPTER 22: A Problem
I woke up and found Jacob's tiny arms around my neck, and my slightly bigger arms around his stomach. I pretend to sleep, living in the moment of his arms around me when I thought of a problem. Amazing that I haven't found this out already, but I would have to wait about a decade before he could be my boyfriend, and I could kiss him again... Shit.
Rachel stirs next to me, stretches, and groans, bringing everyone up with her. "What time is it?" Quil asks politely... wait a minute... POLITELY? Quil is never polite! Ever! I am so going to hold this over his head when he gets older.
"It's... Oh snap, it's noon!" Rebecca says, looking at her wristwatch. We all scramble for our stuff and take turns changing. First the boys, than the girls. When we've finished, we go inside the house to find Charlie passed out on the couch, and loud snores coming from down the hall. "Dad! DAD!" she shouts down the hall, knocking on the door to Billy's room.
"I'm coming..." he murmurs through the door. We all sit at the counter while we wait for Billy to get up, and all of that time I look at Jakes face. Even though he's a little kid, he was still Jacob, and I still wanted him. But I couldn't have him for ten more years. And I was unhappy.
I was cold. Something that I wasn't used to, being with Jacob all of the time. And when I say cold, I mean COLD. I was shivering and I felt my entire body turn blue in just this one second. I could tell I was in something. What it was, I had no idea. I could hear wind outside, howling like I've never heard it howl before. Wait... I have heard it this bad before. But that was when... I opened my eyes.
"I am so sorry Bella, I should've brought you something warm. A space heater or something." Edwards golden eyes were staring guiltily at me. Shit. What the hell am I doing here? What is wrong with me? Why do I keep changing to different times in my life!?
"Need a space heater huh? Well, here I am," Jacob says, opening the flap of a door and coming into the small space.
"Get out of here, mutt. We don't need you here," Edward growls, ready to spring.
"Hey, you said that you needed a space heater. And let's face it, I am hotter than you," (A/N: My favorite line in movie history ever! Needed to include it.) Jacob says, crawling up next to me. Edward doesn't relax, but doesn't stop Jake from getting into my sleeping bag. Jesus, he's warm. Being as cold as I am now, I've never felt anything better. Nothing is better than him. I couldn't show this though, because Edward was sitting just a mere three feet away.
Oh no. If I remember correctly, didn't I agree to marry him the other night?! Oh crap, oh shit. If Jacob found out... I don't even want to think about that. Much less the fact that I was soon going to have to tell Edward that I wasn't going to marry him. I didn't love him, but I didn't hate him either. I tried to clear my head. Cleared it from all of this crap that's happened so far. So let's see; first, I went from being a vampire to the first day of school, than I was an eight year old for a few days, and now I'm on the mountain before the newborn battle. Why was this happening? What is the cause for this? What is reality? What will I wake up next? Why me? Inception much?
"Shit, Bells. You're freezing," Jacob says, for once in his life shivering from being cold.
"Really? I had no idea. I thought I was just randomly shivering and turning blue," I say sarcastically, looking up at him and smile, showing him that that remark wasn't hostile, but just poking fun.
"You're lips are blue," he murmurs, brushing his fingers across my lips. "I could warm those up for you too if you want. You just have to say the words..." I laugh into his chest, trying to ease the tension that just erupted into the room from Edward. He gives Jacob a death glare. "What? Survival 101..."
I laugh again. "You're such an idiot sometimes."
"Is being an idiot good or bad?" he asks, playfully saying it, but I can tell that he's genuinely asking.
"Good. If it was bad than why would I still hang out with Quil and Embry?" We both laugh at me little jab towards Thing One and Thing Two. I was already warm because of Jacobs body heat. I pressed myself up to him more though, and shivered so that they thought I was still cold. "Kay, well I'm gonna try to get some sleep. You should too, Jake. Big day tomorrow," I say drowsily, resting my head on Jacob's chest and pulling the sleeping bag up around my head. I drift off in a matter of less than five minutes, because Jacob was here. And I sleep.
"Oh my goodness, please stop!" Oh, wait a minute... Isn't this that weird dream I had? Or... was it real?
"What?" Jacob asks, innocently.
"You could at least try to control your thoughts."
"Well you don't have to listen..." Jacob mutters, embarrassed.
"It's hard not to. You don't know how loud your thoughts are, it's like you're screaming them at me."
"I'll try to keep it down," Jacob says, sarcastically. Maybe it was a dream. This is where it started changing. "You know she's in love with me, too."
"As much as I hate to admit it, she probably does have feelings for you. Just not as strong as her feeling for me." Boy, was he so wrong.
"That could change."
"I don't think it will Jacob," Edward sighs.
"But if-"
Edward interrupts. " Jacob, you're really getting on my nerves. Go to sleep," he says, exasperated.
"I think I will, I'm actually quite comfortable. I'm just saying-"
Again, Edward interrupted him. "I asked her to marry me."
"...You...What?" Jacob asks in a hushed, disbelieving tone.
"I asked her to marry me the other night," Edward repeats. I feel Jacob reach into the sleeping bag for my left hand. "She's not wearing a ring. Stop touching her," Edward growls.
"If she's not wearing a-... she said no didn't she?" Jacob asks, hope stuck in the back of his throat. Edward was silent. "Evens up the playing fields doesn't it?" Jacob asks, confidence all around him. Oh, thank god! If he had said no, Jacob would've left, and I'd be stuck with Edward... Again.
"I just wanted you to know that I feel that way about her, and that I won't stop asking until she says yes."
"And if she doesn't?" Jake goads.
"She will, eventually," Edward sighs.
"I don't think so, leech," Jacob sneers. All is silent for few seconds.
"Ok, I'm leaving, "Edward states. "Your little fantasies are too much, I'll be out of mind range, but if I come back and find that you've done anything to her, anything at all, you'll be dead by morning," Edward threatened.
"Ooooo, I'm so scared," Jacob says sarcastically. This is my chance. I hear the tent open and shut, and feel Jacob relax after a few seconds. "Just you and me now, honey." He begins slowly stroking my hear, softly. I wrap my arms around his neck and press myself against him, murmuring 'Jacob' and sighing, like I probably would if I was a asleep. I wait a few moments to be sure that Edward is nowhere near. Jacob stayed relaxed.
"Can you hide your thoughts?" I whisper, causing Jacob to jump slightly.
"Oh, I didn't know you were awake, Bells. Uh, sorry, what did you say?"
I sit up and look at him. "Can you hide your thoughts from Edward," I repeat, staring him down.
"Umm, maybe. I dunno. What do want to tell me?" Jacob asks, honestly curious.
"First you have to promise me that you'll do your best to hide your thoughts from Edward," I say, not breaking eye-contact.
"Sure, Bells. What is it?" I relax and lean into his warmth.
"I choose you," I whisper.
"...What?" Jacob asks, astounded, hope trying to break free in his voice.
"You've both wanted to know which one of you I choose, and the odds are in your favor. I've made up my mind for sure."
I could tell Jacob wanted to believe me, but I know it would be hard to, with all of the times I've let him down. " How can I believe you? How do I know that you're not going to go running back to Cullen the second I turn around?" His voice was wavering, scared that I was going to lie to him.
"Do you trust me?"
"I don't know if I can anymore."
"What will it take to prove it to you?"
"I don't know. I just need some time, Bells." I smiled as he called me Bells. I sit up on his lap, and he sits up also, never breaking eye contact. I press my forehead to his. He groans. "Why are you doing this to me?"
I smiled. "You wouldn't believe me if I told you."
"Try me."
"Such a long story for such a short time," I say, slipping my arms around his neck. I leaned in to touch my lips to his. And it felt good. It's been days since I last got to be with him like this. The next thing happened so fast, I didn't have time to do anything but stare.
"WHAT THE FUCK! YOU DIRTY MONGREL! GET YOUR HANDS OFF OF HER!" Edward bellows, ripping Jacob from my arms and flinging his into the other side of the tiny tent.
"DON'T FUCKING TOUCH ME, LEECH! SHE WANTED IT! ASK HER!" Jacob yells back, shaking and shuddering. Edward gets a far off look in his eyes an looks back at me. The hurt in both is face and voice is unmistakable.
"Bella?" he asks. I know what he saw. He was searching through Jacob's mind.
WHY ME?!
I know I suck for not updating, but I would suck even more if I didn't update today. If you didn't know, it's the day in between Renesmee and Bella's birthday! WOOO PARTY! Review please!
