Prompt #374 from Tamingthemuse- Before the War
Note: From now on most of my Tamingthemuse stories will be named as the challenge.
Note 2: I changed the history of the show to help me with this challenge.
Xander wrapped a blanket around his naked body before he walked up to Spike and Thomas. "Spike, what's a slayer?"
Spike realized he was naked and grabbed a pair of boxers. "A vampire slayer, luv. There is always one girl that fights evil. Vampires and demon alike. When she is killed another one replaces her. I killed my first slayer in China just before the Boxer Rebellion." Spike remembered that Xander didn't know what the Boxer Rebellion was but that wasn't important. "All that matters are that these bints are fast and strong."
"Are you in danger, Spike?" Xander whispered his voice a little shaky.
Spike smiled and pulled Xander against him and kissed his temple. "Course not. I've got two slayers under my belt. I'll be able to take care of her no problem."
Warm arms encircled Spike's waist. "When will you go?"
"Soon, but not tonight," Spike assured him. "Why don't you take your new bird to your room?"
Xander frowned unhappy that he was being sent back to his room. It was silly of him to think that Spike would want him to stay in his room. "Okay." Xander took the cage from Thomas with a murmured thank you and left.
Spike sighed hating that he had dismissed Xander but he tried so hard to protect Xander from the darker side of his life. Even though Xander didn't seem to care he'd seen enough violence and death in his last ten years and Spike didn't want to add to that. It wasn't that he lost his edge but when he cared about someone he did everything he could to protect them. When he heard Xander shut the door Spike began barking orders. "Tomorrow night I want you to scout the slayer. Find out where she is staying and what part of the town she patrols the most. I want to know everything about this girl before I go after her."
"Yes, master," Thomas replied. He stood there before speaking again. "Are slayers as bad as I've heard about them?"
"Even worse. It doesn't help that over the years they've gotten stronger. New techniques and weapons, you never know what they've picked up," Spike answered. "I need you to keep your head down. Don't go doing anything stupid like trying to take her on yourself. You've been loyal to me and I'd hate to have to make another loyal subject," Spike said making him sound as if he were a king.
Thomas bowed. "I swear I won't let you down."
Spike dismissed Thomas. He stood there worrying about Xander. What would happen to him if the slayer was stronger, faster than Spike? How would Xander survive? He had no education or job experience. A shiver of fear went through Spike's body as he thought of Xander ending up on the street doing whatever he needed to do to survive. Shaking his head Spike was determined not to let that happen. He promised Xander he'd always protect him and that was exactly what he was going to do.
