Thank you everyone for reading! I'm brushing up on my writing skills. I always tend to read more than I write. Like I said, I have about half of the story written. I'm kind of at a crossroads, but let me know if there's something you want to see. Here's some spitfire.
Back in the present
It's Monday when she finds her fourth note in the side pocket of her bag after she gets to the cave. M'gann is in the kitchen fixing up some snacks so they could do homework together.
Artemis never really thought about how M'gann might be doing in school until she offered a girls only study party. Usually, she just wants girl time to talk about Conner, not that Artemis necessarily minds that. She just wouldn't prefer it. She couldn't crush M'gann's spirits though. Besides, maybe they would actually get some work done.
Artemis lets out an involuntary sigh as her heart rate picks up at the sight of the note. M'gann hears her from across the room and asks, "Is something wrong?"
"No, just a long day I guess," Artemis responds. Which isn't exactly a lie, but if M'gann found out about this, they really weren't going to be productive. Honestly, Artemis is just confused. Whoever keeps putting these notes in her bag must be some sort of ninja. How is she not noticing? She's been training since she was like six to notice stuff like this!
She needs to step up her game. She has some ideas about who it could be at school, but there's no way they're this agile. Although, you never know.
Without thinking, she opens the note. The words are slightly smudged from where the graphite rubbed against other parts of the paper. No other clues other than the person uses a pencil. Her detective skills definitely rival Batman's, she snorts. She reads it, and she reads it again as if the words will fly off the page never to have existed in the first place.
You make me speechless. Your confidence, your sharp
Eyes. Your quick wit was like cupid's arrow, and I never
Even realized. I didn't fall for you, you slowed time down
So I could see what was right in front of me.
-Secretly Yours
No matter how frustrated she is about how she gets these notes, she can't deny that they soften her heart, just a little.
She's still fighting the blush and soft smile from the note when M'gann comes back, snacks in tow. "Artemis," she looks at her confused, "Are you okay? You feel…happy." Her eyes widen when she pauses. "Not that you don't ever feel happy, you just feel much happier than normal. While it's nice, it's just different and enough for me to, like, really notice," she adds.
M'gann's ramblings shake Artemis from her stupor. "I have no idea what you're talking about," she says with the straightest face she could possibly make while shifting her hand to her pocket.
"Ah, ah, ah. Artemis. What's on that paper that has you feeling like, well, me?" Artemis sighs. She really wanted to get her homework done for tomorrow.
She hands M'gann the note and looks at the ground attempting to maintain any semblance of her usual, nonchalant exterior. She winces as M'gann squeals in excitement. That's more chalant than anything.
"Artemis," she flies over and grabs the archer in a tight hug, "This is so exciting! Do you know who it is? Is it someone from school? Do you think they're cute? This is so romantic!" She lets go, looking at the note again while spinning into the air.
"Woah, calm down M'gann. You're talking faster than Kid Mouth does when he defends why he should be allowed to eat my leftovers in the fridge." Last week. This happened last week. She's not quite over it.
"Anyway," she sits down, not quite making eye contact with the Martian who is buzzing for details. "I don't know who it is. Whoever it is, is good at sneaking by me. This is the fourth one I've gotten, and I have no idea how they do it!"
"THE FOURTH ONE," M'gann says loudly, only on the verge of yelling. She won't stop smiling. Her happiness is apparently contagious because Artemis can't help the smile and blush that continues to creep along her face. If anything, she starts to welcome it.
"Yeah. They all end the same way too. 'Secretly Yours'," she laughs. God, it feels surprisingly good to do this. Just talking about love and crushes with her close friend instead of just being on the listening end of it. It just feels so normal.
She doesn't stop to think that she doesn't have time to be normal. It's not in her blood. No, she's going to enjoy this while she can. No one is going to ruin this for her. She's not a stranger to the affection of men, but this just feels different. This isn't men wanting her for her body like the men she passes on the street, or even some of the other kids at Gotham Academy. She feels seen. She feels like there's someone who understands her. Although, they can't really know you. She throws that thought from her mind.
"This is so great! Conner and I have been wanting to go on a double date, well, I have. Now we can have someone to go with!"
"Woah, slow down Miss M. I didn't say anything about that. I don't even know who it is, let alone if I would actually like them," Artemis says hastily. M'gann was definitely jumping quite a few steps ahead of what Artemis was ready to even consider thinking about.
"Robin isn't the only one who can do detective work," M'gann says, raising one of her eyebrows. "Besides, once we figure it out it'll be so fun!"
"What'll be so fun, beautiful?" Artemis groans. She so did not need Wally getting his hands on this information about her maybe-existent-but-probably-not love life.
"Nothing!" Artemis says at the same time M'gann shouts, "Artemis has a secret admirer!" Artemis really groans this time.
Wally pops his head out of the fridge he started raiding. "A shecret admeror," he says with a mouth full of sandwich. He finishes chewing, and questions, "I mean, a secret admirer? What poor guy did you manage to trick into thinking you were likeable?"
"Because I see so many girls lining up to date you, Kid Single," she bites back. Maybe she will give Mister Secretly Yours a shot, if anything to show Kid Mouth up.
"Just because you can't see them doesn't mean they aren't there," he winks back. Oh, he is so full of it, she thinks.
Sensing the pending argument, M'gann decides to divert attention back to the situation at hand. "This person must really like her! She's been getting these love notes in her backpack and locker at school!" M'gann throws in, note still in her hand. He really needs to come to his senses about Artemis. Insulting a girl is not how you win her over, especially when there's a new player in town, she thinks.
A breeze pushes their hair past their faces. "Yoink!" Wally says, snatching the note from M'gann's hand, running back across the room. " I'll just see about that."
"Give that back, Kid Idiot. Or else that punching bag is going to feel sorry for how you look this time around," Artemis shouts as she jumps over the couch, rushing towards the kitchen.
"Don't worry, don't worry," he says, zipping back to where M'gann is. This will be good for them, the martian thinks as she quietly starts to fly and leave the room. They're definitely too preoccupied to notice. "I'll definitely give it back. I just want to see if this guy, ya know, shows any signs of needing to be placed in Arkham."
Wally is opening the note as Artemis yells, "The only guy that belongs in Arkham is you." She starts to get her crossbow out and Wally's comeback died on his lips. Time slows down. The first thing he notices is the paper. Well, anybody could have his type of paper. It's just from a regular old notebook. That handwriting looks familiar too, he thinks. His pulse starts to race as he realizes where this is going.
Secretly yours. Wally's heart plummets right to his stomach. That sandwich is about to see the light of day again way too soon. This can't be happening. This can't be happening.
He's so caught off guard it takes a full three seconds to realize Artemis pulled the trigger and the paper is now attached to the wall. Wally does the only thing he can think of. He runs. He runs far, far away from that living room.
