"This project of yours better have been worth it, Jerry." The general walked down the hall quickly, his many medals and trinkets clinking.
The scientist, in his white lab coat, hurried to catch up to his superior's pace. "Of course, sir." He said excitedly. "This innovation of mine is a major breakthrough in military technology! It'll revolutionize how warfare works!"
"It was difficult getting the Council to approve the funding for this. This 'project' of yours is over triple what you spent on your last venture."
"I promise you will not be disappointed, sir." He drew a keycard out of his pocket and swiped it at the door. A green light flashed above, with a friendly little beep. The door slid open with a hiss. The scientist ran to his computer and typed in a few commands. With a rather showy light show, the beams focused on a giant machine in the center of the room. "Behold! This machine can teleport soldiers to any place on this world! Infiltration missions made easy! Moving troops instantly! Just think of the possibilities!"
The general sighed heavily, resting his face in his palms. "Your five hundred billion dollar budget was for this? A child's toy? There is no way this can even work."
The scientist smiled. "Would you like a demonstration? Step up onto the platform, sir."
"All right, I'll play your game. If this is a bunch of garbage, you're fired." The general stood on the engraved circle at the center of the machine. Several bars rose around him and started spinning rapidly.
"The start of a new day will mark the start of a new era!" the scientist pulled the lever as the clock struck midnight.

"Why, Master Onyx?" the gray unicorn leapt down from his chair, looking over his master's work. "You know we have teleportation spells for this?"
"Not everypony is a Unicorn, young Dust Storm." The elderly black unicorn adjusted a few more of the carefully laid out enchanted runes in the circle. "With this, anypony can go where they want, when they want."
"And it's safe?" Dust helped his master draw another set of symbols on the glowing runes.
"Of course it is. I spent a long time on this, my apprentice. I have confidence in my work." His horn glowed as he lifted a scroll with his magic, checking the configurations. "Yes, this should be it. Get ready to make history, my apprentice."
Both their horns glowed as they flowed their magic into the runes. The stones glowed a brilliant night, as their timedial reached midnight.
