Love Song

"It's about time you got here."

I turned around to face Mrs. Laurent or Mama Joy, as she was known around here.

"Hey, Mama. What happened now?"

"I'm too old to deal with these punk kinds who wanna play at the bar, but one of them said he knew you."

I snorted.

Old woman, my ass! Mama Joy was far from old. In her fifties, there were no wrinkles on her ebony skin and she had more energy than my sister-in-law.

"Who is he?"

Mama Joy escorted me to the back, noticing on the way how the stage was all set up. I still remembered when my daddy would bring me here during the summer to watch him and Uncle Billy play, which was one of the reasons why I'd bought the place when I could after he passed away.

"Here he is." Mama Joy brought me out of my thoughts and my eyes widened when I saw the kid with red hair and dark eyes sitting on the couch inside the office.

"Alec?"

"Hi, Mom."

Mama Joy cracked up at that and I rolled my eyes.

Alec had no business being here, he was only fourteen years old.

"Please, Mom, let me explain."

"Dad and I told you to wait two more years, Alec."

"But Mom—"

"No buts, Alec!"

"But I have to! She's leaving, Mom, and I need her to know!"

I sighed and pinched the bridge of my nose, a trait I had gotten from my dear husband.

"Please, Mom . . . just one night! And I'll never ask again until I'm eighteen!"

I looked into my son's eyes, so very much like my own, and I knew I wouldn't be able to say no.

"If you manage to convince your Dad—"

He didn't even let me finish before he was giving me the tightest hug he could muster.

"THANK YOU, MOM!"

It turned out that my husband was as powerless as I under Alec's puppy eyes.

As we watched our son play a song for his girlfriend, Jane, who was leaving for England in the morning, I couldn't help but reminisce about the night Edward had proposed to me.

"I was so scared that night," Edward said in my ear, knowing what I was thinking. He wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, kissing my exposed shoulder. "You were so pretty and I was sure your dad was gonna shoot me."

I giggled. "He almost did," I said, remembering his scowl when Edward got down on one knee. "I miss him."

"Me, too."

Nothing more was said. We just stood there, with the young love songs drowning out the outside world.
