Rushed Steps

I ran into the hospital; the front desk lady screamed at me to slow down, but I paid her no mind. I could see the elevator door closing just a few feet in front of me, but just when I was going to make it, the doors closed. I let out a string of curses and went to the other side to take the stairs.

By the time I made it to the floor and the nurse's station, I was almost dragging my feet and out of breath. I took a minute before inquiring what I needed to know. The nurse in charge was quick to push me down another hallway, tossing me a surgical cap and scrubs to change into and telling me I'd made it in time.

I thanked her before changing clothes.

I walked inside the OR and quickly ran towards my wife. "Hey, baby, I made it!"

"Oh, Edward… you made it!" Bella had tears in her eyes, and I took her hand to comfort her.

"It's okay, Bella. Everything's going to be okay."

"I just want my babies to be okay..."

"I know." I kissed her forehead. "They have the best pediatrician waiting for them."

"They do," my father agreed from where he stood by the portable incubators.

"Not to mention a sister that's gonna do everything to get these babies out, and their momma fixed," said Rosalie from the other side of the sheet that blocked the view of my wife's lower body.

"See? We are in good hands."

"It's all in the family."

"Dam right!" my father, Rosalie and I said at the same time.

"Okay , then," sighed the love of my life, "let's become parents."

"Yeah… let's," I told her, kissing her soft lips.

"You got it, Bella," said Rosalie, and I saw a couple of nurses rolling in a cart with surgical instruments.

A few hours later, I sat on a rocking chair with my little baby girl in my arms; her twin brother slept soundly in his incubator. They were being kept in the NICU for a day just in case, but overall they were doing great for being preemies.

Bella had a few complications during the C-section, so she was sound asleep in her room. It broke my heart that she couldn't be here with me and the babies, but I knew she would have wanted me to be here to name them.

Elizabeth Marie and Charles Joseph would be so loved by their family, and the two guardian angels they were named after.

"Can't believe you are both finally here…" I said, feeling blessed and like my heart was about to burst.

All my life, I thought I knew what happiness was, but it wasn't until this very moment I finally understood what everyone was talking about. My heart had grown three sizes, one size for each baby and one size for Bella—who was the reason that these tiny miracles were here in the first place.
