New World

Edward watched his assistant from where he sat behind the desk. She was placing tacks on the world map like he asked—a menial task but also important in his study, or more exactly, to him. As a doctor in anthropology, Edward liked to have a world map with the place of the civilization he was studying highlighted in his office.

When he told her about it, she offered to do it for him. He noticed her care and precision as she placed the red tacks. The tank top she was wearing allowed him to admire her beautiful porcelain skin. Her dark hair was a bit messy; she was constantly pushing a few tendrils out of her way every time she looked down to check her notes.

There was something about Isabella Swan that intrigued him; something he hadn't been able to pin point. Maybe it was her quiet and calm nature. She was like that cool breeze in the middle of a hot day that made you stop, forget about the world, and enjoy those fleeting seconds while it lasted.

She was often in her little world, humming an unknown tune—to him, at least—while sketching furiously on her pad. Edward often wondered what she was drawing with such a passion, but he never worked up the courage to ask.

"Professor Cullen?"

Her voice snapped him out of his thoughts, and he couldn't help but blush when he realized she had caught him ogling her.

He cleared his throat and fixed some unimportant papers on his desk, avoiding her ever inquisitive eyes. "Yes, Miss Swan?"

"I finished with the map."

He nodded, still looking at the papers in his hand; having no clue what they were.

He pushed his glasses up his nose and cleared his throat again. "Thank you, Miss Swan. You're dismissed."

"See you tomorrow, Professor."

He nodded again, keeping his eyes on his laptop screen. He watched her through the corner of his eye as she picked up her stuff, and then made her way towards the door. He saw her hesitate and then turn around.

His eyes snapped back to the laptop screen.

"This is my last semester here, Professor Cullen."

Yeah, he knew that, and it made him incredibly sad.

"I was wondering, what are your plans for June 19th?"

He thought for minute; that was the day after graduation.

"I guess nothing, since graduation is the day before."

"Would you like to go to dinner with me?"

His turned his head to look at her. She was smiling and blushing red, biting her thumb nail.

"You're asking me out?"

She nodded.

He chuckled and nodded. "I'd love to."

"Awesome." She smiled brilliantly and turned back to the door.

"Awesome," he echoed and waved her goodbye.

He sat back on his chair long after she had left, looking at the map.

He never took that map down after that day.
