Chapter 2 - Thank Goodness it's Insured
"This new engine Cooter installed really is something." Luke declared while driving through the open fields.
"Well instead of you telling me how great it is, why don't you just give me the wheel?" Said Bo playfully.
"Alright, fine." Luke did one final trick, a 180 turnaround, and skidding to a stop. Bo got out, climbed across the General's hood and slid through the windows and into the driver's seat. Just as he was about to start driving, he noticed the car vibrating.
"The heck'd you do to this car?" Bo asked, turning to face Luke. Luke wasn't looking at him though. Instead, his gaze was transfixed on what was going on outside. "It ain't the car that's shaking." Said Luke, his eyes wide and his face drained of its color. Bo followed Luke's gaze. Outside, the trees were swaying aggressively as the earth beneath them trembled. Bo and Luke both held on tightly to the General as the trees around them split apart and fell like they were made of Jenga blocks.
When the shaking finally subsided, the first thing Bo thought was how grateful he was that the two of them were out in an open field. The trees, while visible, were far away enough that they didn't end up harming them. The second thing he thought was whether or not Daisy and Uncle Jesse were as lucky as he and Luke had been.
"This here's Lost sheep calling Shepard and Bo peep. You guys alright?"
"This here's Shepard" Jesse's voice crackled through the CB. "I'm alright but my car wasn't so lucky, it may take me a while to get back home."
Bo replied, "That's fine. Take as much time as you need. What about you Daisy, where are you?"
No response.
"Daisy? This here's Bo, are you alright?" Bo could feel his chest becoming tight from worry.
Still no response.
"Daisy please say something!" The desperation was palpable in his voice.
"Last time I was with her, she was still at the farm." Jesse offered.
"Okay thanks, we'll go there now."
Despite the souped up engine, the drive was one of the slowest that Bo had ever done. The earthquake had caused every road to be covered in fallen trees, making them almost impossible to navigate. Luke sent a call out on the CB every twelve seconds asking Daisy, or anyone who knew her whereabouts, to respond. Nobody did.
When they got to the farm, Bo and Luke jumped out and made a beeline to the house. Inside the kitchen, the tables and chairs had been turned over, and almost all their dishes were smashed to pieces on the floor. But still no sign of Daisy. Bo was about to check the bedrooms, when something out the window caught his eye. It was the barn. From the front, it had looked in-tact, but from behind Bo could see the large oak tree had fallen through the wall.
"Luke, we gotta get to the barn!"
After sprinting to the barn, Bo and Luke were met with exactly what they had feared. Daisy's lower legs were trapped under the log that had fallen through the barn's wall. Her upper body was the only thing that was mobile as she was trying, and failing, to dig herself out.
Luke looked over the log, trying to figure out the best way to move it, while Bo kneeled beside Daisy. "You alright Darlin''
Daisy shook her head. "Just get this thing off of me." She choked out. Seeing that her body was shuddering, Bo took off his yellow overshirt and draped it over her shoulders like a blanket. "Don't worry honey, we will."
Bo and Luke tried lifting, pushing and rolling the log, none of which seemed to work. It wasn't long before everyone realized they were going to need more help.
"I'm gonna go inside and call 911." Said Luke. "Bo, you stay with Daisy. Daisy, just stay calm, you're gonna be fine." With that, he took off towards the house.
Daisy was still shaking, so Bo gathered her into a hug, tucking her head under his chin.
"I love you Bo, and if I don't make it, tell Luke and Uncle Jesse that I love them too." Bo shook his head and wrapped his arms around Daisy tighter. "Don't talk like that. You're going to be fine."
Tears streamed down her face as she suppressed her sobs just enough so she could talk. "I know you're just trying to make me feel better, but I've been under this log for a while now. I know I've lost a lot of blood."
"That don't matter none. We've all got the same blood type, you, me, Luke and Uncle Jesse. We'll give you as much as you need to get better."
She tried yanking fruitlessly at her legs again. "What if they can't repair the legs?" She asked tearfully. "What if they gotta cut them o-"
"Daisy Duke, you have got to stop talking like that!" The words came out of Bo a little harsher than he meant to, but he needed to snap her out of the downward spiral she was finding herself in.
"Let's think about something else. Something besides your legs." He paused, brushing the stray hairs out of her face as he tried to think, "Hey, how about a song. I'll sing you something, give you your own little private concert. How does that sound?"
Daisy forced a small smile and nodded. "A song sounds nice."
Bo hugged her to his chest again. rubbing her back as he sang. He didn't even recognize what song he was singing at first, but the words just seemed to flow out of him.
Flower gleam and glow
Let your powers shine
Make the clock reverse
Bring back what once was mine
Daisy began to doze off, the blood loss making her drowsy. Bo wasn't sure if it was dangerous to let her fall asleep in her condition, so he decided he didn't want to chance it.
"Honey, you still awake." He asked
"Mmhmm"
"Can you remember the next line?"
She didn't respond right away. Bo worried for a brief moment that she had already lost consciousness. "It was, um, heal what has been hurt."
"That's right honey, good job." He spoke the words as if talking to a wounded animal. "After that it was change which faith was mine. Do you remember what comes after that?"
Daisy's eyes were closed, her body on the brink of blacking out. Yet she forced herself, through sheer willpower, to keep herself awake. "You're saying it wrong. It's not change which faith is mine, it's change the fate's design.''
It was then that the two of them could hear the sound of sirens approaching. Luke ran in the barn and knelt beside Bo and Daisy. "The ambulance and the firetruck are here." He took Daisy's hand. "You okay Daisy."
"Mm tired." she murmured.
"The paramedics said you might be. It's okay if you want to fall asleep now." She was out almost as soon as he said it. Luke turned to Bo. "It's better if she's out, it'll be less painful that way. The paramedics have asked us to tell them about her health history while the firemen get her free."
Bo nodded. "Just give me a second, I'll be out there real soon." Luke left the barn as the firemen were coming in. Bo gently lay Daisy down, readjusting his shirt so it still kept her somewhat warm. "I'll finish that concert for you later, okay."
