Real Friends
"You need to wear heels," said Alice, pulling the most terrifying pair of strappy high heeled sandals from the shopping bag.
"No way in hell I'm wearing those!"
Alice rolled her eyes and pushed me towards the bed. "Yes, you are! Men like long legs and these will make yours look like they go on for miles."
"NO!" I screamed, taking off the stupid sandals she had forced me into. "Edward asked me out when I was wearing my own clothes and had my hair in a freaking ponytail!" I pulled the stupid pins from my hair.
"Stop, what are you doing? You're ruining everything!"
"No, I'm improving it! I've had enough about your constant nagging and manipulative ways, Alice! Either you are my friend and take me just the way I am, or you can kiss this friendship goodbye!"
"Fine, do it your way! But don't come crying to me when he dumps you for a prettier girl!" she yelled, stomping down the steps.
"If he does then good riddance! I don't like selfish and superficial people!" I fired back, following her.
"So, I'm superficial now?"
I shrugged. "If the shoe fits…"
She screeched and stormed out of the house.
I groaned, already feeling awful for the things I had said. I knew Alice was just trying to help me, but God knew I had enough of her playing Bella Barbie with me.
"Are you okay, sweetie?" my mom asked me later that day.
I was by the lake, looking at my reflection when my mom came to stand behind me.
"I will be… I think."
"You fought with Alice."
I sighed. "Yeah, how did you know?"
She handed me the phone. "She's on the phone."
"Thanks, mom," I said, taking the cordless from her.
"Just so you know, Bella, no one can force to be someone you're not. I know Alice meant well, but sometimes it's better to just be yourself and let your own heart guide you."
I nodded and watched her walk back to the house.
I put the phone on my ear and as soon as I said her name, Alice started to apologize and ask for forgiveness. I apologized too and we both ended up crying and promising to never fight again.
It was an empty promise, all friends fight every now and then, but the real friends stay with you through the rough times. They never discard you simply because you have too much drama or feel like your life is too much for them; those friends are never worth keeping.
Real friends stay with you through thick and thin.
