Wow. I can't believe I got this many views on a prologue. Thanks! School is wrapping up, so I should be updating more often soon. I will still be pretty busy with finals, but I'll update this as quickly as possible.
BEEP!
BEEP!
BEEP!
Click! The alarm stopped as Luz rolled over and slapped the snooze button on her alarm clock. She then moved back only to be woken up again for what felt like thirty seconds later by her clock. "Mmughh…" She finally turned over and sat up. Luz turned off the alarm and got up. She headed to the bathroom and took a quick shower. She got out and brushed her teeth before getting dressed and grabbed her makeup supplies. After all, weeks of stress and barely any sleep doesn't hide itself. Luz was over-studying for her finals. She was trying to become the greatest witch of all time, like her mentor and surrogate mother, Edalyn Clawthorn, or as everyone called her, Eda the Owl Lady.
I don't know much about makeup, but I know that when you do your makeup, you aren't supposed to see that your eyelashes are unusually thicker and a bit longer than the night before. Luz apparently also knew that because she stopped when she looked at herself in the mirror. "What the- What happened to my eyelashes?" she thought to herself. "Actually, they don't look half bad," Truth be told, Luz was too tired to do anything about it. She quickly brushed her hair and teeth and went downstairs for breakfast.
"Hola, Máma y Vee ¿Qué hay de desayuno?" Said Luz, asking what breakfast was. "Eggs and bacon," Camila replied, flipping said eggs on a pan. Stringbean was floating near the table, finishing her last piece of bacon. Stringbean, Luz's palisman, woke up to the alarm clock with Luz and immediately floated downstairs. Being made of wood, Stringbean doesn't really have much to get ready. However, Stringbean apparently has a soft spot for Camila's cooking. Vee, Luz's basilisk sister, just started. "They are almost done. Salt and pepper?" asked Camila.
"Sí. Gracias," Luz answered tiredly, hugging her mom.
"You did your makeup differently today," Said Vee, noticing Luz's eyes. "It looks great."
"Thanks," said Luz, too tired to explain that it wasn't makeup. Unfortunately, she wasn't able to hide her exhaustion from Camila. "Stayed up too late? Again? You need to go to sleep earlier."
"I can't," Luz admitted. "I have finals in two days, this number might change in the future, so be prepared for that. I need to study. Plus, I need to be ready when UWM University of Wild Magic returns my application."
"I know my daughter never gives up. You will ace the finals." Said Camila. She took the bacon off the frying pan and set it on a plate beside the eggs.
"Thanks, Máma, but it's not just me studying that keeps me up. It's hard for me to sleep with all the stress." This is true, as Luz had only gotten four hours of sleep that night.
"Even if you somehow bomb your finals, UWM is run by Eda," Said Vee, " I don't think she would ever decline you, so there is no reason to worry."
"Eda still has to approve applications based on GPA, like all other colleges. I know she hates it but she also has to follow the rules."
"I still think you shouldn't be working yourself so hard. Now, you had better hurry. You're going to be late." Camila said as she placed her own breakfast on the table. Luz and Vee were almost out the door when Camila called to her.
"Yeah?"
"You are going to ace it." Encheraged Camila.
"Thanks Mamá. Te amo," said Luz.
"¡Adiós!" Said Vee. They walked out the door and crossed the street into the woods.
I should probably explain something that I always ask myself whenever I see something extradimensional happen, what about the government? Did they not get involved? In fact, the closest thing The Owl House got was some crackhead spying on the Nocedas, Jacob Hopkins. After the defeat of Belos, Camila Noceda bought the Wittebane house in the woods. They tried to open the portal to the public. This is what got the attention of the FBI. Of course, they shut it down, but soon they realized they were dealing with some very powerful people. They tried to make peace with them while at the same time learning more about them.
Unfortunately, the portal was still closed off to the public. The FBI explained that if the mass found out about this, it could potentially collapse the world. People would start rioting and threatening both the human and Demon realms. This was true, not just something the FBI said to cover it up. Even worse, Jacob Hopkins immediately investigated the portal and threatened to expose them to the public. And then there was the odd group of kids exploring the old house in the woods, only to find themselves in another world. The FBI decided to put guards near the portal and a wall around the house, restricting access. It wasn't entirely off-limits, though, as there were exceptions. They gave special privileges to the people in high power, meaning the Nocedas/Clawthornes and friends of these parties. They still needed identification (especially since there are multiple species of shapeshifters on the Boiling Isles).
That is why as Luz and Vee got closer to the house, they noticed an armed guard disguised as a citizen sitting on a bench near a concrete wall on the property's perimeter. It is a miracle that the US put as little defense in the demon realm portal as they did. Luz, Eda, and King, the three most powerful and influential people on the Boiling Isle, fought as hard as possible to prove the Boiling Isles weren't a threat. They were eventually able to ease the nerves of the government, at least enough to make it safe for them to travel back and forth. Besides curious scientists collecting samples and doing (non-lethal) experiments via the exchange program and the Noceda's, no humans were allowed in the demon realm.
"Hello, Jake," Luz said to the guard as she scanned the ID the FBI gave her at the gate. Vee similarly produced a card and swiped it on the machine, which made a beeping sound. Since she went to school on the Boiling Isles, she went through the portal multiple times a day and knew all of the guards.
"Hello girls. Did you get enough sleep last night, Luz? I know how hard finals can be on one's sleep schedule, especially as a Sinior." The guards were surprisingly friendly for FBI agents. They were probably just trying to be on good terms with the Boiling Isles. However, it got to the point where Luz, being Luz, befriended most of the guards there.
"Heh, no. How 'bout you?" Replied Luz.
"Well, considering the fact that I get up at 4 am every morning for my shift, I'd say I slept as well as I could. Good morning Stringbean," said Jake, petting the snakeshifter, who was disguised as a bracelet, ouroboros style. Stringbean let go of her tail and hissed a small greeting. Whenever Luz and String bean were in public, Stringbean would transform into a bracelet to hide the fact that she is a palisman. "Well, good luck with the finals," Jake said as he pressed a button. A light on the scanner turned green, making a beeping noise, and the gate automatically opened.
"Thanks, Jake. See you tomorrow." Said Vee. Jake's shift usually ended before Luz and Vee came home.
"Goodbye," Jake responded.
They walked up to the old Wittebane house, its red and yellow door glowing brightly. Luz noticed Christmas lights hanging up and decorations everywhere. After Camila bought the property, she let Luz and her friends decorate it. Not that they didn't already decorate it. When Luz and her friends were stuck in the human realm for a couple of months, they turned the Wittebane house into a base of operations. They renamed the house to The Owl House, a human version of Eda's Owl House. Luz came up to the door and slowly opened it. The doorframe immediately filled with a bright, pulsing, swirling white light.
