"Baby are you sure you're okay with this? Because I meant it when I said that-"
Josh firmly pressed his lips against Maya's mouth as quelled her. Rubbing her hand with the pad of his thumb as their fingers were interlaced he took a deep breath to hide the nerves he was holding up inside. "No I'm fine. I trust you and I trust your ability to maintain firm boundaries. Besides, you want to be able to work and I can't do that for you if I'm on set all day so he's the next best thing."
"Well no one beats dancing with you." Maya sighed and squeezed Josh's hand. "I mean it Josh. Thank you."
Josh smiled softly and looked behind Maya at the empty studio behind her. "Anything to make you happy. Go ahead, I'll pick you up later."
Maya turned on her heel and pushed her dance bag further up her shoulder. Walking into the empty halls, she found her studio space and smiled. The marley floors, the windows on every wall, she felt like she was home. She soon found herself stretching and easing back into her limber state when she heard the door open and shut behind her. Looking over her shoulder, she stood up slowly and pushed a hair out of her face. "Hey," she greeted softly. "I appreciate you coming down here. Means a lot to me."
Andrew Adams stood there in front of her, smiling happily. "Of course. Anything for you." Maya stared at him. "And Josh, I mean." He coughed awkwardly. "Anything for you and Josh." Wanting to go back in time and re do that he just shook his head and brushed it off. "Let's get started shall we?"
When she and Josh decided to focus on their careers heavily while they were in Atlanta, this isn't what she had pictured at first. Her, Andrew, alone in a studio again. What made it even weirder was that Josh had suggested it. He was adamant about how he felt Andrew could help her grow lyrically. What didn't make it any better was that maya knew he was right. Andrew would be able to help her grow in ways that Josh couldn't. She just wasn't sure how all of this would end up playing out.
Maya threw her blonde hair up as she tried to draw her mind away from everything and focus on her craft. Music played softly in the background as she began to freestyle, warming up her body. Andrew joined her as he warmed up his own. Molding and moving together as they allowed the melodies to direct them. Twisting and turning and intertwining they found themselves getting drawn closer and closer together. Maya extended her leg as she moved into a variation, Andrew right behind her. He supported her small frame and she somehow ended up perfectly in his arms, face to face, breathing heavily as the song ended. They stared at each other for a moment, before Maya jumped out of his arms and into the hall.
Her skin sticky with sweat and her face beat red, she took in a shaky deep breath. It was then she knew that this was going to be an interesting experience.
.:.
It was no lie that Andrew found Maya attractive. He had since the first time they met, but he would never cross that line. Especially since she didn't want him to. She was just so intriguing. The way she moved, they was she thought. He admired her desire to just live life and dance, she didn't want any of the extra stuff. He honestly thought that the last time he'd see her would be that day in Brooklyn he stopped by unannounced. He never thought he'd get to see her again, let alone dance with her again.
They seemed to have this chemistry when they danced. To him it felt electric. He didn't know what she felt. He at least thought she believed it was good but after what just happened, he wasn't so sure. Standing in the same spot she left him in, Andrew swallowed and walked over to the other side of the room, to his bag. The heat wad starting to get to him so he pulled off his shirt and grabbed his water. At that same moment, Maya walked back in and locked eyes with him. "We need ground rules," she announced.
Andrew's eyes followed her as she walked around the room. "Number one. This is strictly a working relationship. We're not friends. We can't be friends. Number two. There's no need for us to be in close physical proximity of each other unless we're dancing. Got it?"
Nodding slowly, Andrew set down his bottle. "Got it. Anything else?"
Maya looked him up and down and started talking wildly with her hands. "Yeah. Shirts on at all times." She clapped her hands together. "Okay now we can get some work done. I was thinking-"
Boundaries? Check. Rules? Check. Happiness about said rules? Uncheck. Neither of them had any idea how they were going to perform believable routines if they couldn't even foster a real friendship. I guess there is a first time for everything huh?
.:.
Josh sat down in his empty trailer as he heard his phone ring. Looking over, he smiled and brought the phone to his ear. "Hey Mom."
Amy's voice was like silk. So perfectly smooth and comforting. "Hello Gabriel."
Josh sat back and laughed. "Oh no. You called me Gabriel. What's going on Mom? Is Eric on the news again? I swear if he called Africa a country again I'll-"
Amy laughed. "No, that's not it. I just missed you, you know? You've grown up on me and I don't really get to hear from you much anymore. You're just so busy and everything. I just miss my baby boy that's all."
Josh instantly felt guilty. He had been distant from his family lately. Dealing with the baby and Maya and work- everything else just fell to the wayside. "I'm sorry Mom. I promise I'll call more." He kicked his feet up and smiled as an idea popped into his head. "Tell you what, I'll even come down to Philly as soon as I'm done working."
Josh could hear Amy's voice light up. "Really?"
Josh lived for making his mother happy. "Yeah, I mean it. I'll bring Maya and we'll spend like a week up there. We haven't been up there since before the wedding so it's long overdue."
Slowly wrapping up the conversation with his mother, Josh smiled as he thought about being back in Philly, in his old room. The last time he'd been there was the first time he brought Maya there. Shortly after they got engaged.
"So this is where our kids will be staying when we ship them off to your parent's for the summer?" Maya joked as she enter Josh's room with him close behind.
Josh rolled his eyes and set their bags down in the corner. "Ha, ha. Very funny."
Maya giggled as she sat down on the edge of the bed, her long blonde hair falling against her back. "You know I'm funny." She looked around and took in every detail of his room. It felt like a time capsule to her. A small glimpse at the Josh that existed before her. Seeing the opportunity for another joke, she glanced towards the window and noticed a big tree next to it. "So how many girls have you snuck in through that window?"
Josh threw her a pointed look as she held her hands up, insisting her innocence. "Look man, I'm just trying to figure out what Josh 1.0 was like. I only know Josh 2.0"
Josh raised his brows and stifled a laugh. "Josh 2.0?"
"Yeah," Maya said as she stood. "The you before I knew you." She walked towards him. "The you that existed before I got to know this hot, intelligent, extremely sexy you." She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him into a tender kiss.
A smug look rested on Josh's face. "Sexy huh?" Maya unwrapped her arms and playfully pushed his shoulder before sitting back down. "So since you've gotten a sneak peak at Josh 1.0, what should I know about Maya 1.0?"
Maya pursed her lips and tilted her head as she thought for a moment. "Well you did get a taste of Maya 1.0 in L.A., but honestly. I wasn't the best person. I didn't have many friends and the guys I did talk to, I had a tendency to ruin things before they got too deep." Josh opened his mouth to question why. "And before you ask why, let's chalk it up to what I'm sure any and every therapist would tell me. Daddy Issues. And no, I don't want to get into it." She stood again and kissed him softly on the lips. "I just want to enjoy this one thing that I haven't managed to mess up."
That felt like such a far away moment. It was just after the premiere, they were newly engaged, excited and happy. Now they just, were. No adjective to follow. But they'd get out of it soon. It was just some sort of slump. They were working through their trust and their issues. Things were going to be just fine. I mean, Josh trusted Maya. At least he really wanted to. He wanted to wholeheartedly believe that she was capable of doing what she needed to do for their relationship. Hence, Andrew's reappearance. Josh was sure that if they could get through her rehearsing with him while he worked, everything would be just peachy. Except, no one was sure if it would be sour or sweet just yet.
.:.
The silence between that night was the first comfortable one they'd had in a while. Maya quietly dried the dishes while Josh washed. Each humming to themselves and thinking about their respective days. Only slightly nervous, Josh broke the silence first. "So how was rehearsal with Andrew today? I would've asked earlier but you just seemed so tired when you got in the car."
Maya smiled and Josh. "Thank you for asking. It was good. You know, it's always nice to rehearse with a partner. It gives me chance to work on choreography I had planned in my head and see how it really works." Silence fell again as Josh handed her another dish. Putting it away, Maya coughed. "I set ground rules with him today." Josh looked up as he rinsed out the now empty sink.
"Oh did you? That's good. I really appreciate that Maya."
Maya looked down at the ground and shuffled her feet. "Of course baby. It was something that needed to be done. No matter how awkward or unwanted it might have been."
Josh put away the dish rag and leaned against the sink. Frowning at her words, unwanted, what did she mean by that? "What do you mean unwanted?"
Looking up, Maya's eyes widened as she realized what she had said. "Shit," she cursed under her breath. "That's not what I meant, I-"
"Then what did you mean?"
Already exasperated, Maya sighed. "Josh, please don't do that right now. I thought you said you trusted me remember? All I meant is that it would've been nice if I could at least maintain more than a hi/bye acquaintance with him. We had actually kinda became friends a while ago. That's all." Josh nodded slowly and started to leave the kitchen. "Josh where are you going?"
Josh stopped in his tracks and turned to face his wife. "I'm just going into the other room Maya. Forgive me if it's not easy to hear you reminisce on your friendship with him that is simultaneous to one of the worst times in our relationship." He turned slightly to continue walking, but stopped to say one last thing. Rubbing his hand across his chin, he sighed. "Look. We've been through a lot these past few months. Andrew being one of them. I only suggested him dancing with you because I knew his abilities could match what you're trying to achieve. I am trying my hardest to trust you. I was honestly doing great up until about thirty seconds ago when you decided to mention how you missed your friendship with him. I love you Maya and will sacrifice so much to be with you, but I need you to be willing do the same. And trust me not being his friend is not a huge sacrifice."
A/N: Hey guys! I'm back. Sorry to give you guys another rough chapter for these two but the pay off should hopefully be great at the end. I just really want them to face some struggle within the relationship and be forced to work through their issues now that they're married, you know? How do you feel about Andrew being back? What about the Josh/Maya disagreement at the end? What about Josh throwing Andrew in Maya's direction? Let me know!
