The softness of the upholstery pressed against Josh's cool skin as he sat timidly in his chair. He looked around him and took in the neutral walls of the office. As his eyes moved across the room, they finally landed on woman in front of him. "Joshua?"
Josh's eyes focused in on who was in front of him as he adjusted himself in his seat. "Josh is fine." Silence fell between them. "Dr. Watson, are you going to ask me a question or?"
Dr. Watson put down the clipboard that was in her hand and took on a more casual stance. "I'm here to listen. You chose to come here today. So how about you tell me what's going on."
Josh could feel himself start to relax slightly. "Well, um, my wife decided to start coming and I just felt like it might be in my best interest to do it too. I thought I might benefit in some way."
Nodding her head, Dr. Watson maintained a cool exterior. "Yes, I understand that your wife wanted to come but why are you here? Yes you may benefit but why? What makes you think that you need to be here now?"
Taking in a big sigh, Josh stilled himself as he thought hard about why he was there. "Everything has been... a lot." He scooted himself to the edge of his seat as he started to open up. "I mean everything has just happened so fast. And I was doing just fine with all the changes. I'd gotten my dream job and Maya and I were just about to get married and everything was perfect. I mean sure, there was the media attention and us being on opposite schedules because of our careers but we were managing fine."
Watson nodded and leaned back. "The last time we spoke, you mentioned that you had desires of starting a family. How are you feeling about that?"
It was almost as if you could see the air deflate out of his lungs. His once open demeanor clammed up. He sat back and crossed his arms. "I don't want to get into that. Not now, at least."
"Of course, we're here to talk about anything you want."
.:.
"I'm doing good right? Like I'm not failing therapy right?" Maya's eyes were big and focused on her therapist with worry. A few sessions in and she honestly felt a lot better already but she had a hard time reading her therapist. "Dr. Watson?"
Dr. Watson, a beautiful black woman with rich skin and full curly hair, smiled at her. "Maya relax. There is no passing or failing in therapy. In fact, I think you're doing really well. You've been very honest and open and dedicated to working on yourself. It is admirable."
Maya breathed out in relief. "Really? Because I wasn't sure and I just really want to make sure I'm moving forwards and not backwards and I-"
"Breathe," Watson interrupted. "I need you to take a deep breath okay?" Maya closed her eyes and took a deep breath in. "Good. Now, back to what you were saying. You talked about your desire to start a family one day."
Maya sat back in the chair and smiled. She played with the ring on her finger and laughed softly. "Yeah. I've honestly dreamed of it for a long time. I just didn't think it would happen so soon. I didn't think any of this would happen so soon. By the time we were married, I had found out I was pregnant. And I was honestly really excited at first but then I think reality set in. Josh was working out here and I was still in New York and then I realized I was twenty-one, pregnant, and my husband was thousands of miles away." Her eyes became glossy. "I got scared."
"And what were you thinking when you felt scared?"
Maya wiped a tear that fell and leaned forward. "I started to second guess everything. And I mean everything. I wasn't sure if I even wanted the baby anymore and as soon as I thought that I felt guilty and retracted it. But by the time I could even talk to my husband about it- I miscarried."
Steady tears continued to flow out of Maya's eyes and Watson handed her a tissue. "I'm sorry that you had to go through that. It seems like it was very tough on you. You seem to be reacting very heavily to this memory. Can you tell me what you're feeling right now Maya?"
Maya wiped her face with a tissue and wiped her now red nose. "I feel guilty, ashamed. I feel like I willed it to happen and I think that makes me a terrible person. I mean what mother wishes to no longer have her child? There a women out there struggling to get pregnant and I thought about wishing mine away. That's awful."
Dr. Watson shook her head, her curls moving with her. "No Maya. That does not make you a terrible person. That makes you human. You were a twenty-one year old woman who felt alone. The person you love had to be elsewhere and you scared and alone. That is a completely normal feeling to have."
Maya furrowed her brow together. "But then it happened. And for a split second I felt relief and then I just felt guilty and then I felt sad. Like deep down, I knew I wanted to have that baby but- the timing just didn't feel right."
Watson remained calm as she allowed Maya to process her thoughts. "You seem like you're under a lot of stress Maya. When was the last time you just had fun? Just pure, genuine fun."
Maya's voice caught in her throat as she realized she couldn't pinpoint when that was. "I don't know."
.:.
Josh draped his arm around Maya as she nestled further into his shoulder on the sofa. "How was your session with Dr. Watson today?" Maya asked.
Josh sighed, thinking back to it and shrugged his shoulder. "It was progress. She actually gave me homework."
Maya gawked and laughed. "No way, me too. Say what we got on the count of three? One."
"Two."
"Three!" They yelled together. "Just go out and spend time with you!"
They stared at each for a moment before sharing a laugh. "She's good, isn't she?" Maya laughed.
"Yeah that was pretty smart of her to do. She can tell we need a good, carefree time with each other." Josh pulled Maya closer and kissed the top of her head. "She's right though. And I know just how to do it."
As he got up off the couch, Maya groaned as she was losing her pillow. "Hey," she complained. "I was comfortable. What are you even doing anyway?"
Josh smiled and went to go grab his keys. "I'll be back in a few hours. Go shower and get dressed all fancy and you'll see." he bent down and kissed her forehead. "You'll be beautiful as always."
Before Maya knew it, she finished placing her wedding ring back on her finger and touched up her makeup. Soft, pink lips and straight hair that went perfectly with her black dress. As she wiped some lipstick off her teeth, she heard a ring at the door. "What?" she mumbled to herself as she bounced down the stairs. Opening the door, her confusion turned into admiration as she opened it to see Josh standing there with a bouquet of flowers in his hand. "Josh," she breathed.
Josh, clad in a nice suit, smiled up in awe at his wife. She truly looked stunning. "I believe these are for you Mrs. Matthews."
Maya laughed and took the bouquet before pulling Josh towards her. "Why thank you Mr. Matthews." She sealed their lips with a kiss. "Let me just put these in some water."
Josh shook his head. "No, allow me. These are a gift to you, you shouldn't have to do any work."
Josh took the flowers into the kitchen and quickly found them a vase before he joined Maya back in the front. Swooping in beside her, he wrapped an arm around her waist and whispered in her ear, "You look beautiful." He pressed a kiss to her temple as she smiled.
"Thank you baby. You look quite handsome yourself." Josh hugged her from behind, earning a chuckle from Maya as her heart swooned. "But we are very dressed up. So where are we going?"
Josh shrugged his shoulders and began to lead Maya outside. "I may or may not have snagged us reservations at the Ritz Carlton."
Maya's jaw dropped. "Josh shut up! No you didn't."
Josh grinned as he nodded. "Sure did. Come on, I don't want to be late."
.:.
Dim lighting, classy music, and smiles sat between the two as they each took sips of their wine. They were having fun. True, genuine fun and it was honestly what they needed. As the waiter took their dessert plates from the table Maya smiled as she felt Josh's hand on top of hers. She missed this. She missed them being them. "What are you thinking?" Josh asked as he brought Maya out of her head.
Maya shook her head, her hair moving with her. "Nothing. Just appreciating the moment. That's all."
Josh nodded and took a deep breath. "So," he began. "Not to get all serious in the middle of our fun night but I just wanted to say that I appreciate everything you've done in these last few weeks. I've seen how good therapy has been for you and it honestly makes me really happy to see you doing so well. I recognize how much effort you've put in towards rebuilding us and moving forward together and I just wanted to acknowledge that."
The couple shared a smile. "Thank you," Maya whispered. "I meant it when I said I was devoted to this. To us. You and me forever baby." She took another sip. "Brought together by dance and united through love."
Josh smiled and drank as well. "I know that's right." He set his glass down. "Speaking of dance, what do you say we head out of here? I was able to get us some studio space not too far from here."
Maya's grin grew. "Did you even have to ask?"
They left as soon as they could and soon found themselves in an empty dance studio in the middle of the city. Walking in, Maya kicked off her heels and took in a deep, relaxing breath. "I always feel so calm when I walk in here. Like nothing else even matters. All my problems simply melt away."
Josh started undoing his tie and unbuttoned his shirt. "Yeah I get that. I remember feeling that way back in L.A. when we were on the show."
Maya laughed. "That may have been the only time I didn't feel that. God, I was so stressed during that show. I thought I was going to have an ulcer."
Josh frowned. "I think an ulcer is a bit dramatic but I get what you mean." He walked behind her and wrapped his arms around her. "But remember that week we had off? I dragged you into the studio and we just danced?"
Maya giggled as she thought back. "Yeah, that was the first time I told you that I loved you. It was a special day."
Josh turned Maya around in his arms and placed his hands at her waist. "Which is why I figured we should dance to this song."
Ashes by Celine Dion started to flood their ears. Maya smiled up at her husband as she felt transported back to that moment in time. All the stress she was feeling melted away all because of him. He was never apart of the problem, he was always apart of the solution. They started to move with each other organically, just how they did all those years ago. Pushing and pulling and responding to the other's movements, and moving in synchronicity and just the right parts.
As the song concluded, they stood chest to chest, allowing the moment to overtake them. Maya placed a small on Josh's cheek. Looking up at him through her eyelashes, she whispered, "I love you."
Josh was always the key. Maya knew that now. Her homework was so much more than just spending time with him. It was a reminder of what was at their core and that because she had him, she could anything. They could do anything.
A/N: Another chapter in the bag! Don't worry still not at the end yet. This may end up being the longest installment of the series. I'm not sure yet. But anyhow, what do we think? Remember be kind! I'm loving that I'm getting to the part in my plan where they get to fall back together!
